'Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: The NES Trilogy' (RETROSPECTIVE)

Leonardo, Michelangelo, Donatello and Raphael. The Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles were every where when I was a kid. This cartoon, Mighty Moprhin Power Rangers and Batman: The Animated Series were as vital to day to day life as air and water, believe me. The Turtles predate their titular cartoon, with the team’s big debut coming in the shape of a comic book all the way back in 1984, but the Turtles overall history isn’t out focus here this time out. Today, we focus on a trilogy of Ninja Turtles video games, all of which released on the Nintendo Entertainment System between 1989 and 1992. From Shredder to the Technodrome, from the sewers to the city streets and from Bebop and Rocksteady to Tokka and Razar, it’s all here. Pick up the phone and order a pizza, DanDans. It’s Turtle time.

The first NES game might not be looked back on that fondly, but at the time it came out it was HUGELY successful. It stayed on Nintendo Power's rankings page for months, and I want to say it spent most of that time holding one of the top three spots.

As a TMNT 8-year-old superfan, who wouldn't get an SNES until many years later, TMNT: The Manhattan Project was amazing. I bought it on sale at Toys R Us with my birthday money, and played the crap out of it. It was the only TMNT game that I owned on the NES, and it was the only one I needed.

TMNT 3 The Manhattan Project is my favorite game on the NES. It’s the very first video game I ever got for Christmas. I remember being a kid and my present in the stocking was this. I was in love the second I saw the box art. Wish I knew to take of those things when I was younger. I still have the game. The stages were all fun and creative. I loved the super moves and music was incredible. The boss fights get me hyped every damn time. Groundchuck and Dirtbag were figures I had and I loved seeing them in the game. TMNT 2 The Arcade Game I played every chance I could. If I found it at an arcade or Godfather’s pizza place, I was there. The home port was a lot of fun. My dad hosted a house party once and a friend’s kid brought this with him. Me and the group of kids played it all night. Good times. The first game I played last. It wasn’t for me then and isn’t now lol. Really happy this vid took off. Good shit, pal.

After we had moved to a new town, in Summer 1989, my parents had rented an NES and a Genesis with some games, to ask me and my sister which system we wanted. They had only rented Super Mario/Duck Hunt (NES), Space Harrier 2, and Altered Beast (Genesis). Though i enjoyed those Genesis games more than Mario 1, i KNEW that only Nintendo had a Ninja Turtles game, so i begged for that. Coming home after the last day of school, in summer 1990, i was greeted in the living room by a brand new NES, already connected to the TV! With Mario/Duck Hunt of course, and a Rented copy of TMNT! I had to learn what "rented" meant, but i came to terms with it, and played the hell out of TMNT! I couldn't get very far, but i rented it often. I may have passed the seaweed level a couple times as a kid, but it was both fun and frustrating. I was also disappointed that they didn't have the song, but i loved the music they had! I almost prefer the NES main theme to the 80s-90s tv show theme, and THAT one's still the best turtles theme! In my 20s i discovered ebay, and bought TMNT, Double Dragon 1, 2 nd 3, Mario 3, Mega Man 2 and 3 FOR LESS THAN $3.00 EACH!! Ahhh, the 2000s were a wonderland for NES and SNES games in pawn shops and ebay... I also picked up TMNT 2 and 3 for about the same to test them out. In my 20s, i finally beat TMNT 1, it was a lot deeper and more interesting a game thahn i had thought! I smashed Shredder with the laser beam weapon, in like 3-5 shots, but i loved it! Trying TMNT 2 (the NES version) for the first time in my 20s had me kinda put off. the controls were clunky, major frame dropping, and flashing, the levels ran WAY too long, and the boss fights were awkward. I couldn't get into it, i hated beating it. But 3 fixed most of the problems i had with 2. Though it had a less interesting premise to me.

New to your channel. Loved this retrospective. Great job. I subbed. I was born in 83 so I was the prime age for living through each of these releases in real time. So hard to explain their endless allure to the younger generations. Equally hard to explain the excitement of getting a new Nintendo power in the mail. I can still remember my excitement over one of my Mega Man robot masters getting honorable mention in their contest to design a new Mega Man robot master (winner drawings were included; runner-ups just named). Glad to see people who are younger like yourself archiving these old gems to educate the youth. ❤️

It’s funny, the game I used to play as a kid where I would jump the walls cause I had to piss so bad and sometimes actually did piss myself (I was like 3) was SpongeBob SquarePants The Movie on PS2. My mom said I used to be completely obsessed with that game and I still do have it on PS2 even though I haven’t touched it in a while or have thought about it even, but alas you talking about your memories with TMNT 2 The Arcade Game made me remember my memories of SpongeBob lol. Good times. ❤️‍🔥

In the right perspective, the first game was awesome, it was all we needed. I am older, therefore the first game was the definitive Turtle game. Hours upon hours of gaming spent facing the challenge of it, getting a little further each playthrough. However, this was all before the Arcade Game was released. Then things changed, the second installment became the standard and rightfully so. If you put your mind in a time when there was nothing but the flagship title, you would see it in a different light. For it's time, it was a superior title.

Retrospectives are best when you experienced them in real time. For example you remember where you were you when the game, movie or topic was released, you remember the landscape of the world, you have 1st hand experience on how big of an impact a movie or game made. You remember the toys, the movies, the cartoons, the blankets, all in real time.

The TMNT were my childhood for sure! I had the toys, I watched the show, seen the movies and played the video games! My breakdown of the NES Trilogy as follows: TMNT 1: I don't think it was bad game per say, it just was really difficult. The music was great as well, even if the classic theme wasn't in it. I can understand how people can be put off by this game and I don't blame them. TMNT 2: All things considered, this was a good port of the arcade overall. No it does not have the same graphics as the arcade but we can forgive it's shortcomings. At least konami included some exclusive content in this version to make up for the said shortcomings. TMNT 3: By the time this game came out, my admiration for the Ninja Turtles was starting to dissolve as I was becoming a teenager and feel like I have grown out of them. Also the Super Nintendo was just released and I was getting into that then. But I still played this and it was an overall solid game. It had no arcade version to come off of, so it was it's own thing. Of course I played all the 16-bit TMNT games as well, but I'll talk about them another time...maybe if you could do a retrospective of those. ;)

It was more of a mix of everything. The mirage comics storyline was doing its own really unique stuff, the game’s plot more closely follows the cartoon (like Bebop, Rocksteady, April as a reporter, the Technodrome, etc). The main comic reference is the cover, as you mentioned, which was the reprinted issue 4 cover. I always thought it was weird they didn’t recolor the masks for the box art to match the game and the more well-known toon colors, but it’s great art either way.

The original TMNT game went into development right around the same time if not before the animated series did. This is why the theme song is not in that game. Because it did not exist yet. The only thing the game developers had to draw from was the comic books. This is also why they all have a red bandana on the box art. The 1st game is based off of the comic books. All the others draw from the cartoons.

I cheated with a walkthrough, but doing so made me appreciate the game much much more without the typical frustrations. I also found that the damn dam stage was not nearly as hard as I remembered. So many good memories playing these games and more. As much as I loved the turtles games, I love donkey Kong and donkey Kong country 2 Diddy's quest more. I like that catch phrase. Of course it could be bc I used to say it. Wait... was that Phil Rudd in the commercial? It's funny when you watch a movie/show/commercial, when you're a kid, you don't know certain actors in whatever. Then when you see that movie etc. years later. You know who the actor is, it's like you're seeing it for the first time. I first noticed that with Eugene Levy. when he was in one or two John Candy movies.

First Turtles on NES is best one. You can't rush it like it looks like you did. It's like Adventure of Link. People felt abused by them but they lack obvious discipline. Go ninja go ninja go but take your time... Strategize.

I owned TMNT 1 and despite it being super difficult, I loved that game. I also mastered the swimming level to the point of getting through it without any damage. I was around 7-8 years old…still my greatest accomplishment ever in a video game 😂 Great retrospective! Thanks for it!

Hell yeah, it’s turtle time! Love the shoutout at the beginning of the video, thanks as always for the support! That first game was such a difficult thing back in the day. I wanted to love it, but I spent way more time with TMNT2 on NES because that was much easier and had the multiplayer. The first game lives on in infamy because of the Dam level and the soundtrack for sure, though. I can appreciate as an adult how each turtle has different abilities and styles, too. You had me VERY intrigued and ready to retroactively reevaluate TMNT3 when you said it sucks, but then the joke kicked in and I was back on board haha. I remember really liking that one a lot, I played it a ton once I got it. I should really give the Cowabunga Collection another shot, I bought it a while back and haven’t messed with it too much. Really loved this one, man. Great to hear some old school memories mixed with modern critique on these old favorites!

Konami's TMNT games from the 80s and 90s are absolute righteous. The Cowabunga Collection is one of the best that Konami delivered for us to revist those classics, and I've played all of them.

I'm sure this was brought up before, but the "Nintendo Seal of Quality" had nothing to do with the quality of the game itself. It was just to ensure to the consumer that the game would work on the NES hardware. Unlike games on other older consoles, that lead to consumer distrust in video games and the 1983 video game crash. That's it.

@@616Entertainment Right, but not the point that I brought up. It's no big deal, I'm sure it's common knowledge by now. It's all good. Cool video, by the way. TMNT II was a favorite of mine back in the day and I have great memories playing it with buddies. You're totally right, it was an awesome time to be a kid back then! Keep up the good work. Cheers!

My parents took me to a video game store and they had some opened games and you could take a look at the game on the tv. They showed me the tmnt game, my first impression was like, This game is awesome, nice graphics, the turtles are easy to control. I was able to get to the second level and the dam stage was impossible, at this moment I hated the game. The graphics are fine, the turtles looks very good. There are 2 main problems, when you hit the enemies they don’t get staggered at all, so if the is a difficult enemy it is better just to pass him and get just 1 hit, if you try to fight it you will loose half of your energy. And the stages where you can fall down, there are very small plataforms, so hard to control. So I think this game is very good, but this flaws destroy the game. So with many year playing and playing, finally I was able to finish the game, now I enjoy it and come back some times to finish it again. But for new people playing this on 2024 probably you will hate it, there is no motivation in playing this for the first time. When I was a kid there was nothing else to play, they bought me a game once in two months, so I was stuck with this game for 2 months with no new games, so I had to play it, now you don’t have to live with this kind of torture. Would be cool if konami continue with this idea and make a Metroidvanis style game with the turtles, finally this game existed in the game boy as the tmnt 3 game, but I want a bigger game, with more moves and in color, so this will never happen. At least we got the shredders revenge from dotemu, to me this is the continuation from tmnt 4 turtles in time, so inside my head this game is called tmnt 5 shredders revenge. At least I have nice memories of this games, even if they don’t make new ones, I can still play them with the kowabunga colkection.

That original TMNT nes game… oof I do not have good memories of it. I was a huge TMNT fan and I remember getting this game for Christmas. I was so excited to play it but once I did that excitement turned into disappointment. It just was t fun at all to me. Then I went to the arcade and saw the TMNT arcade game… holy hell it was awesome and such a pallet cleanser. As far as the other NES entries I didn’t play after getting burnt with the original and I felt the NES just couldn’t give a really good TMNT experience.

Wow, I feel like I robbed myself of some good experiences as a child. I bought my NES at a garage sale when I was around 9-10 years old, and a copy of the first TMNT was included. I was a HUGE turtles fan, so I thought this would be awesome, but it was so hard that I never even got close to beating it. I saw TMNT 2 and 3 in used game stores all the time, but never took a shot because of how hard the first one was. Wish I would have given them a chance. Sadly, this was pre-internet, and talk of these games never made it to the playground at recess, so I didn't know what I was missing. I picked up the Cowabunga Collection though, so I'll have to work my way through all of the games.
