13 year-old Austin from Thetford in Norfolk suffered a stroke while playing a football match and was very quickly referred for specialist care at Addenbrooke's Hospital in Cambridge.
After his parents noticed a decline in his mental health, the football community and stars from the Premier League rallied around Austin with video messages and well-wishes to help spur on, not only his physical recovery but also his mental well-being. Austin then surprised doctors with his speedy recovery, and was able to return home and leave hospital after two weeks.
Just three-and-a-half months later, Austin has now returned to the pitch and is back doing what he loves - playing football.
Cambridge Children's Hospital will take this approach forward, and offer 'whole child' care to children and young people across the East of England. The specialist hospital will be the first to truly provide mental and physical health care together, delivered by staff who are trained in both.
