You mentioned that the power from the Teensy is enough to power the three optoisolators. You missed three. If whatever the outputs connect to is designed well, there'll be three more optoisolators on that side as well, and the Teensy would have to power the LED's in them.

That's a good catch, but I actually meant 3 not 6. The input optoisolators are powered from 5V rail straight from USB. Teensy is driving only outputs (if they are connected) which are 20mA.

I'm interested in the 3x3 teensy merger. Question: is your board compatible with Teensy LC?

Sorry I haven't tested LC version when it was possible to buy it. Now it's not available either. It should work though, PJRC states that it's pin compatible to 3.2.

Andrei, I have a couple questions. For the Teensy 4.0 version, can this act like a USB host device, so you can plug midi controllers that only have USB midi out into it and control devices that only have DIN-5 midi in? I see pictures of board on Tindie, and it seems to have holes on PCB for access to Teensy 4.0 USB pads on bottom of the board, but no pogo-pins are listed in the BOM. Is the 5 pin header just past Teensy 4.0 mounting sockets for the USB breakout? I don't see a schematic on your GitHub page. Example -- USB midi controller (Novation Launchpad XL, only USB midi out) --> Teensy 4.0 MIDI Breakout board USB host --> Teensy 4.0 MIDI Breakout board DIN-5 midi out --> Electron Octatrack.

Hi Mike, this is really good question. You're correct, I technically have holes on the PCB, so you can install the pogo pins to get access to bottom pins, but they are not routed. The reason I did it is the complexity of soldering those, so, I thought I better do simple breakout board that give access only to 5 serial lines. I planned an extended version version with all 7 Serial ports access and USB circuitry. Now, I'm not going to that :) WIth the release of Teensy 4.1 I no longer need customers to deal with that soldering complexity. Plus you have 8 Serial ports. This board is in the design right now.

@@DeftAudio yes, I saw the Teensy 4.1 yesterday and saw that they broke out USB to a pin header like on 3.6. I'll keep an eye out for your next design. Thanks!
