how about trying this: raise your knee to your chest as you bring your calf to touch your hamstring, and then extend in a straight line towards the opponent's head or torso or thigh. Then pull your leg back in reverse. What you are doing here has no speed, no power and can be easily blocked and grabbed.

Dropping your guard when doing a front kick is dangerous.
