In 2019, Tejas Got Soul, an afternoon of music and storytelling, celebrated the history of “brown-eyed” soul and its rise in Houston’s East End. The event focused on veteran musicians from the 1950s to the 1970s who worked alongside hit makers such as Sunny and the Sunliners and Richie Valens. Tejas Got Soul set out to promote the music’s little known history by recording these early musicians’ stories and presenting them in collaboration with younger East End musicians who have long admired their contributions.
Tejas Got Soul 2, funded by the National Endowment for the Arts, will mine the legacies of Tejano, Conjunto, Norteno and Cumbia musics that find their home in the East End and other parts of Houston. First up, will be Marky Lee who cut his musical teeth playing with the Mystics in 1964. He and his band would perform live on Saturday mornings at the legendary KLVL, the city’s first bilingual radio station, housed in the historic Morales Radio Hall, still located in the East End’s Second Ward. Stay tuned for a preview of Tejas Got Soul 2 as Marky Lee performs favorite tunes on Buffalo Bayou Partnership Instagram and Facebook.
