1:18 Hwang Su-Il, who is the motion-captured practicioner TMM talks about, is of Korean ancestry but is actually a Japanese citizen. As far as I know he still teaches in Tokyo at 'Hwarang Hwang Taekwon-do Club.' [EDIT: if you want to see some videos of him, please refer to my reply to Bank21khz in this comment chain.] P.S. 'Hwarang' is the name of a group of Korean warriors from a long time ago, and is also the name of one of the patterns(forms) in ITF style taekwon-do which Hwang Su-Il practices. In the game Hwoarang's dobok outfit is similar to that of a 4-6 Dan ITF teacher, with the black stripes on the sleeves of the arms and pant legs.
@@21kHzBANK21kHZ No problem, here is some more info to help you! I put video links at the end of this comment which you can watch instead of reading and probably understand enough as well. Many moves in Tekken are motion-captured: a real person wears a special suit which tracks different parts of your body, and this data can then be used to animate the game characters. For Hwoarang they used a person named Hwang Su-Il. I don't know exactly if he was born in Korea or Japan, but his family is originally from Korea and he lives in Japan. I think that currently he is a 7th Dan black belt in ITF taekwon-do. There are more details to the story, but basically there are two major federations for taekwondo: World Taekwondo (WT) which is very popular and seen in the Olympics, and the smaller and less-known International Taekwon-do Federation (ITF). Note: if you see 'taekwon-do' it usually refers to ITF style, whereas 'taekwondo' usually means WT. In ITF, the traditional movement sequences known as 'kata' in karate and 'poomsae' in WT taekwondo are called 'patterns' or in Korean usually the word 'tul.' The patterns are named after things of importance to Korea, such as historical figures, locations in Korea, etc. The pattern first taught to red belt students is called 'Hwarang' and is named after a group of Korean scholar-warriors who lived in the ancient kingdom called 'Silla' ~1000+ years ago. In taekwondo the training outfit which many Japanese-style martial arts call a 'gi' is called a 'dobok' in Korean. The white outfit you see Hwoarang use in this TMM video for example is close to, but not exactly, like a dobok which a 4th-6th Dan black belt instructor would use in ITF; 1st-3rd Dan doboks in addition to having the black belt have black stripes around the waist area, basically at the bottom parts of the jacket. 4th-6th Dans also have black stripes running down the arms and legs, like you see in the Tekken outfit. For 7th-9th Dans those stripes on the arms and legs are no longer one big stripe but instead two smaller ones. Note: the dobok worn in WT style taekwondo is different to ITF doboks. Note: Hwang Su-Il is the only person in this video with the 4th-6th Dan dobok with the black stripes on arms and legs, the other black belts do not have those stripes as they are max 3rd Dan.
So, I'm 25 right now. I started playing Tekken in Tekken 3 when I was 4 years old. King was my first love, but I distinctly remember going through Hwo's movelist and getting the 10 hit combo and listening to the sound of the commands as it was being executed. To this day, I can still hear the beeps from each command. Man oh man, were those the days. Also, I realized I was doing tech catches with Yoshimitsu very early in life with his Meditation teleport to tornado back throw, or his ghost throw from side.
At 4 years old? Damn, you must have some good coordination. When I was young, I had Tekken 5 and I would play the game by spamming 1+2 on every character and then being confused as to why it doesn’t beat the opponent.
Isn’t that cool? To hear all these terms like “tech”, “mixups”, “punishes”, etc... yet, we were all doing this already at a young age without knowing terms or having RU-vid to search “techs”.... I remember when my Dad Introduced me to tekken 3 as a kid. He taught me the concept of “punishing” before he even knew it was even a thing lol.
@@lightningangel45 so it started with my dad. Used to beat the hell out of me with King, so he goes to work and I resolve to beat him with his own character. So I spent HOURS in practice in King's sky ring, and Dad comes home and I BEAT HIS ASS.
Garry Callis so with my Dad & I, I used to watch him wreck the arcade mode, then I would play when he went to work, I would do well but then would get wrecked by heihachi or ogre in arcade mode. I was so young I used to get mad and cry & curse heihachi out lmaoo. But then my Dad started watching over my gameplay & would offer tips & advice. Next thing you know I was Marshall Law Flip-Kicking my dad from wall to wall lol. He used Marshall or Yoshimitsu. I followed his footsteps & those were my first two characters i was good with. Now, 20some years later, I’ve used *almost* everyone in the game. In Tekken 7, my Main is King & Kazuya. I feel so nasty with King I don’t think I’ll ever stop playing with him now. But I will never forget Marshall laws command list lol. Since tekken 3 days.... As for my Dad, he hasn’t picked up a controller in years lol. & I can’t help but think, as I watch my babies watch me play tekken, is the cycle going to continue?...
Great to have so many people with fond memories. But its not true that you couldnt look up stuff. 1998 when Tekken 3 came out the FGC already existed for a long time. Street Fighter 2 launched 1991 and arcade culture existed in the 80s already. There was internet already in 98 of course and a mass of websites explaining advanced combos, techs, punish, zoning etc already existed. There wasnt RU-vid but before RU-vid we used the internet to get all our info on websites. Tekken 3 was already the 3D age of fighting games long after King of Fighters, Street Fighter etc.
That throw looks so sick in Arcade Mode. The camera switches angles to make it feel like you really are getting hit with those kicks and then gets a close up of Hwoarang looking like a badass.
It's amazing how a character that has ALWAYS been mid tier and has ALWAYS been difficult and risky to use has always been regarded as a cheap character...Hwo is one of the most authentic and badass character of the entire Tekken saga..and one of the few who actually kept his charisma, personality and movelist through out the years
KenjiCBZ the time to learn the character and time to learn the match up have a big disparity, putting all the responsibility on the opponent. Most hwoarang players that tell you to “learn the match up” dont even know how to counter their own char, and they have tools that allow them to panic other characters moves. So at the end of the day hwoarang players want you to learn other char but they dont learn the other match ups, cant react to snake edge but want everyone to react to backlash.
@Tcb bct I know. Usually there would be 4 to 6 new characters in a tekken game. But tekken 7 has about the same or less amount of new characters including the guests.
I love these trips down memory lane 💗 I said yesterday that TK3 Eddy was my fav iteration ever. Well same for Hwoarang. Actually for most of the character introduced in Tekken, TK3 is their best version. I remember doing all those Hwoarang stuff and feeling invincible lol. Even my mom loved him XD. That's how charming he was.
KenjiCBZ oh yeah mixed w/ some American Kickboxing due to some of the spinning back kicks & spinning hook kick in his victory animation back in Tekken 5 DR.
this was also the game where he was easily poked out of backlash and his back 3 out of flamingo also got you in sticky situations as well because in high level people would just jab as they see the move and get a combo on you. We who main him for so long had to deal with so much back then, This is also why he had a decent throw game. Love the vid mainman keep up the great work 🤍
I never even tried to learn Hwoarang - to this day I only know the moves he had from Baek, but most people indeed picked up either Eddy or Hwo when the game came out (Eddy was already notorious when we only had the Demo Disc version of the game).
I played hwoarang (still do) also played eddie coz of the demo but my friends banned him as a character and I agreed with it. Most of my friends played Jin coz they had played kaz in 1+2 another played Bryan and another yoshimitsu I lost days to this game
Man, Tekken 3 was the hugest turning point in my life for Tekken. Tekken on the cover, Eddy being introduced, Bryan and Law both becoming my mains instantly and remain to be to this day. I hated that Marshall was gone but loved the new take on Law in general. That Hworang jab jab low high NEVER worked on me haha reflexes way too sharp and its so easy to see coming. TMM is right though, everyone thought They were invincible with him and Eddy smh oh how satisfying it was to bring people to reality through simply blocking and punishing. People were button mashers and used Eddy and Hworang to destroy people who didn't know how to block and or were to aggressive themselves. I blew so many minds making these players look like infants. The concept of defense never even entered their minds. Some told me that I was "cheating " for blocking haha good times.
Thank u Adrian u reminded me about how awesome this game was and how i got into tekken in first place Hwoarang was my first tekken character ever and still my favorite characters till now 😊
The Tekken 3 demo was my first exposure to anything remotely related to Tekken. Even though was only able to choose between 2 characters, Xiaoyu and Eddy Gordo, I was still able to have a list of my favorite characters just based off design. They were: 1. Jin (Gi / Motorcycle Clothes) 2. Hworang (Gi / Motorcycle clothes) 3. Paul Phoenix (Motorcycle clothes) Honorable mentions for Eddy Gordo (Tee Shirt & Shorts) and Heihachi (Fur coat & White suit)
WOW I'm shocked. Very impressive. I'm Hwoarang player since T3 but never remember that he already had most of the moves he has now. I believe I was just a kid who spammed 333 4444 :)
@@Anomaly188 Paul and Lei were the two other characters you could play against, but they weren't selectable for me. Might be a regional thing? I'm from Europe, what about you?
That feel when you hear MMS describe playing Tekken 3 with others but when you were 10 years old you were literally the only kid playing it (against the computer), following on from your love of the previous Tekkens - also played solo. This also explains why I loved Hwoarang and Eddie in 3 because they were so good for high damage kick spam.
Haha nice mentioning the tk3 tech traps. So many tech roll traps existed for big damage. Therefore normal recovery was insane fast and much easier then now in tk7. In tk3 he is very prone to yoshi death breath since his strings so often have highs in it for big punishment. Back in the days when i enjoyed playing hwoarang since you knew when his turn was over and not get wrecked by a power crush.
Mashing X/3 on hworang was what sooo many people around me did back then and it took me till tekken 5 to actually learn more of him since i was a jin/paul main for a long time
My main Ever Since . You can't be mad since Hwo requires alot of execution and he's a very complex character but I can see why people would Hate on him
I always attributed Hwoarang having so many strong throws to his lore as a street fighter. Someone doesn't wanna pay up after a match? Roll and Choke, lesgo.
every school is different but where i learned tae kwon do we also learned lotsss of grappling (i’ve also heard this from many others) so tae kwon do is more than just kicks !
I'm just an old trash bag at Tekken but I though I knew my shit about Tekken 3 Hwoarang, I can barely even make work the combos showcased in the game back in the day, and you hit that 10 hit combo casualy I didn't even knew... I just got demoted from old trash bag to old unflushed toilet rank...
I was maybe 8 or 9 when T3 came out. I remember when I was 12 I played the arcade cabinet against my friend at the skating rink, and I chose hwo, he was eddy. I 10 hit the shit out of him. He's still my main today. They gave and took so many things away from him over the years.
@@nnoo Ok I upvoted anyway, but I doubt MainMan will see and again, Devil Jin is not playable in Tekken 3. Maybe what you saw was a mod of Jin with True Ogre's moveset
My friends: *challenges me to Tekken 3* Me: *proceeds to dominate with Yoshi, to the point where I purposefully refill their health and heal myself just so I can harakiri* My friends, after 8 rounds against me: WE ARE NO LONGER FRIENDS! DON'T EVEN TALK TO US! Me: God damn ragers.
