An introduction and hopefully an enlightening glimpse into the spacing world of Tekken. I originally planned on uploading this a couple of days ago but I chose to spend those days with my gf instead.
Thanks for posting such a helpful video! Although I do want to mention, in case it wasn't mentioned in the video, that the backward wavedashing technique for backdash can't be used by characters such as Paul, Bryan or Nina because they have a qcb-motion... in order to backdash with those characters one will have to learn korean backdash or the one with b,b,n,u...
I've always wondered this. Since bdc (basically wd as you've pointed out) should be a definite skill for any serious player, how come we do not see more Mishimas users at the top level? I know they exist of course, but why not more of them? EWGF and all that are so good!
To me they just cancel the qcf with a very tiny sidestep. That should look like this: qcf,n,u,n,qcf,n,u,n,qcf.. It's called snake dash if I remember correctly, you can do it with every dashing character like Paul, Wang and so on ;)
I mastered crouchdashing and backdashcancelling on the pad. This is my second day with the arcade stick, and I'm strugglinh very hard to get it back...
These past two months I managed to rank my way up to Destroyer; which is the second highest rank on the wii u version. The wii u tekken community is so small, there is literally only 3-5 high skilled players out there, I don't even know if i'll become better fighting the same people all the time.. thanks for all the vids main man, your online commentary matches helped me alot.
I think it's also worth noting that qcb won't work with characters with a back sway. Trying to kbd with quarter circle motions with characters like Paul or Nina is gonna result in complete failure.
Backwards wavedash does not work with qcb characters (Bryan, Paul, Nina). It will give their backsway. The PROPER NOTATION is backdash into db into another backdash (b,b,db,n,b,b,db,n,b,b,db).
f = forward (pressing your stick or dpad towards the opponent) n = neutral (not pressing a direction) qcf = quarter circle forward (its an abbreviation of the motion down, down/forward, forward. the same as ryu's hadoken in street fighter) there is a site called tekken zaibatsu that has a full listing of tekken notation if you're wondering about anything else.
Thanks for the info on the Korean backdash. I always thought it was just a quick backdash cancel. You might want to explain how to side-step cancel out of character specific dashes (like brian/paul/dragunov) or out of crouches in a later video.
Kind of curious to know why ss cancel wasn't mentioned since it's quite useful to get out of the wall or position your opponent towards it. Also snake dashing was left out. Regardless, this is a great tutorial. The wavedash exercises are really helpful. They train you to slowly carve the motion into the muscles.
Hey MainMan! Another great video as usual! I love being subscribed to someone who uploads so much useful content. I had a question I figured would be appropriate for this video. I just got my arcade stick today, and am essentially re-learning the game execution-wise. I play Mishima's and Lee, so obviously movement and precision are even more important than usual. I was wondering if you had any tips for the new stick players out there such as myself. Again, great vid, and thanks for reading.
Lol the 2p side is easy to get down. The 1p side takes a lot of commitment. Last night I spent two hours wave dashing/ ewgf on the 1p side. My wrist was tired as hell
Hey Main man, thanks for this AWESOME vid! I have one question though. Does the wavedash thing at 4:22 also work for raven's qfc? Because I often see good Raven players dash in like crazy and I have no idea (as a pad player) how to do it. Could you help me out please. Thank you.
This guide was really helpful. I use your tip of using the crashdash cancel to do the backdash cancel. Thanks, to your excellent tip, my movement is starting to improve.
Umm Main Man you made a mistake when talking about the korean backdash. You cannot do a qcb with back sway characters. For back sway characters you have to cancel it with d/b not a qcb.
Also gunz the duel 2, isnt as great as 1, maybe its graphics are better but thats not what the game is about, they tried to remake gunz 1 but better, and they failed, gunz 1 mechanics cancelling tricks are called glitched by some people and the makers didnt intend for it to be in the game, so in gunz2 they tried 2 be as succesfull again and failed , gunz 2 has its own new style tho but its not a smooth as gunz 1
i praticed all night on tekken with lee and kazuya and i still suck. later on i tryed different characters i have movement but not skill.i wanna main Steve and Lars
hey TheMainMan!...great vid. ive got a request thou, could you please make a combo video for lars and miguel?! theyre, my favorite characters and are also my top characters in wtf.tekken.com......please make a combo vid about both of them, thanks
Er... um... wat. I said that because Bears are so fat and have a hug upper body, they have bad movement. However, the concept and execution of backdash cancelling and sidestepping is the same with Bears.
Everyone has the same backdash cancel and sidestep. Well not exactly same (Kuma has bottom 5 sidestep and backdash because of his model) but the concept and the execution is the same.
So I should be practicing crouch dash and backdash cancelling more frequently. I tried korean back dash and tried to rush it in matches. I think I should try back, back, sidestep, etc then.
Rank doesn't particularly mean anything. I could make a new account, be 1st-dan and still be beating everyone because of my knowledge from the main account. In ranked matches I normally just go on the defensive considering I don't know most of the characters. I don't find training on players of equal rank or lvl as you effective because they're not really a challenge... go for the higher ranks xD
Hey MainMan, I think you should mention something that most people don't know about backdashing with a controler. If you set both sticks to movement and you hit back, and hold and hit down then right after you let go of the down you hit another back. Then you keep repeating this for a backdash, Hold the back and then hitting down gets you a db due to the game's property of "adding" to movement". I don t know anyone who does this, but its the easiest way to do a korean backdash. hope you respond
TTT2: JDCR( best player in the world), qudans, knee, hao, saint, furumizu. T6: mainstreetryu, mishimastar, crazy dongpal, tetsuo, maddogjin. Man, you have to watch more tekken videos, i think you are watching too much USA players. Look for youtube channels like taktak1893 (Korean TTT2 matches), flyingwonkey (Japanese TTT2 matches), garyoak99 (T6 matches).
does anyone know how to let your partner jump in when you lying on the ground with the currently playing character? i always see gameplays of this, the partner won't be normal switched,no, he jumps in from above and hit the enemy but it just do a little damage. But how to do? PLS HELP
I literally don't understand why this is so hard... I got all the movement down, I can do 4 EWGF as a staple and sometimes I get 5, and I've only been playing Tekken since Tekken Revolution came out. It's my first fighting game too, before that I was just playing shooters.
TMM, what's your opinion on pad or stick for wavedashing? I also play Kazuya but I have to start practicing wavedash/k-backdash seriously before dedicating myself to learn him. Also, is a Korean stick really worth it? I heard it eases movement and is better suited to Tekken.
I tried the crouch dashing with Lars, and it does not seem to work the way you said it would. Do all characters have the same dashes or is that just the mishimas? And if so why not show it with characters with more general dashes?
Can u plz do one with kuma? he is my main guy and the only guy i been tekken lord with. ( if ghost battle counts then i been tekken lord with jin aswell:D ) plz atleast try one with kuma i loved him since i play tekken2 13 yrs ago.
It really depends on the preference of the person. I, as a child, was used to playing fighting games on a controller. Growing up, it was hard for me getting used to the feel of an arcade stick. So for me, which is more difficult? Arcade Stick > D-pad
Only certain characters can wave dash, all the mishimas and a few other characters (I don't know the list). Also, unless I am mistaken, all characters can back dash. So for the characters that can't, what is the best alternative?
easiest way to do it is to f+3 and cancel with d/f, f+3, cancel with d/f, repeat. use d/f so that it's smooth movement with the stick/pad. doing silent entry and then going allllll the way to d/b just makes the input more clumsy and complicated.
I played Tekken 4 like seriously when I was 3 and now I'm 13. I forgot everything. About the game. So therefore, Tekken rev, is my first Tekken game. I play with controller and only manage to do EWGF 3 consecutive times.
It would be extremely helpful if u can get ur hands on motion when doing wavedash and backdashes in to a video, like stick placement which finger does which motion and stuff, and again thx for a great video! =D
it basically makes your movement much more fluid and much fast in smaller incrementsm with less chance of getting hit with moves while moving. It's an advanced movement that, on its own, doesn't do much, but can be reallt powerfull in the right hands. If you face a player who has mastered korean backdash and you haven't, you will lose most of the time if he uses it correctly (meaning he spaces, predicts moves, sidesteps etc.).
Difference between korean backdashing vs normal backdash Normal backdash - once you double tap back, you are launch punishable Korean backdash - you are 0% open to any attack (and maybe 50% to low attack)
preference really. If you are already proficient with the ps3 controller, I don't really advise getting a stick unless you feel like you are limited by your controller you know what I mean?
Hey Main Man can u do a video on the advanced side stepping plz cuz I would love 2 kno do that too. And as a matter of fact I call it slide stepping because I see it happen the character jus slides
can you also make a video with command history on and record your left hand to show us how backdash cancel (1p and 2p side) is done on a stick? I like to see it visually from you if possible.
It is the same process. Sliding your thumb from down to forward and then tapping forward. Reaching fast speeds is more difficult, but many great Tekken players use the standard controller.
Dat dosent mean he kick ass. Like he can counter combo so hard and if they are in the air he juggle them as f**** Btw this was just a question since i love the bear :)
do you know you can beat good players with simple combos once you show them you know how to play, they expect something impresive but you offer them basic combos insted
Good stuff but do you have any tips for characters with a sway? I can't really do a reverse wave dash to get a backdash cancel with them ( Paul, Bryan ect...).
You are really a passionate! I hope I had all this free time to put in Tekken too :) I play Tekken since 1998 and I haven't reached your level yet! lol
He still rocks and since i know the main man is pro at this game i wanna see how he play him and maybee i learn some more stuff with that awsome bear :D
