fuck i accidently made this version public, i was going do some minor updates there's a couple glitches in this version i guess theyll have to be in the full 4c video now
I love this strange little anime movie. Treasure Town is a whole character unto itself in this film. Very few anime does such a great job portraying a living breathing city like this movie does. This is probably one of the very best productions Studio 4°C has ever made. Be happy, be happy!
I was hoping you’d eventually cover Tekkon Kinkreet!! This is probably my favorite anime film. I had fell in love with the soundtrack by plaid before ever seeing the movie. The special edition DVD and both art books are sitting on my bookshelf now
I always felt like there was something special about this anime, and thanks to this video, I know why; unique artists with a passion (and understanding) for the original work, exceptional animators, and a masterful balance of 2D and 3D animation (something I agree is still very hard for a lot of productions today). The freedom of the camera angles/movement is done beautifully too. Nice to know they seem to have put just as much heart into the music as well, re-doing everything because the footage inspired them that much is a testament to that for sure
Still remember when i've first seen it! Never read the Manga, never seen a trailer, never even eared of it, but the art-style of the Blu-Ray on the rental store really seemed interesting, so i decided to give it a shot. Soon after i was mesmerized by what i was watching on the screen! It really felt fresh and it is to this day one of my favorite Anime ever! But, being from Europe i've always watched it with Japanese sound and English subtitles never knowing the original was actually in English XD
This is defenetly on my top 10 animated movies list, up there with some of yuasa's, and I feel like part of that is due to the amazing soundtrack that plaid composed, didn't know that they reworked everything after seeing the movie, I'm glad they did! Great video, loving the 4⁰C series :)
Tekkon Kinkreet took me by surprise. At first, I noticed the superb art and choice of color, but then the story evolved and it completely took me off guard. Art is simply amazing, gorgeous as expected, and really helps bring a unique feel to Treasure Town. It is very colorful and happy for such a sad story, but it really works! It's A MASTERPIECE to me. Thank u for your video.
I'm so surprised about the origins of this film, I really love the animation & I'm fascinated with the way different films choose to mix 2D with 3D: Promare being a recent example
Same. I watched this at the perfect time in my life and it was so impactful… Two brothers afraid of growing up and change. Afraid of becoming individuals and eventually living their own lives. In a city that doesnt feel like home anymore..
Over maybe a decade ago I emailed Michael Arias for just tips in general about life. I didn't get anything back, as expected. But in a year, I got an email back from him giving me really good life advice and was super encouraging. Really cool guy.
This movie and Metropolis were the films that made me appreciate anime as something that could be much more than just cartoons for entertainment. It of course lead me to the wonderful rabbit hole that is the works of Taiyo Matsumoto, the man doesn't has even one whack work.
Tekkonkinkreet is a criminally slept on, amazing movie. To the extent that I would like to suggest legislation to punish the heathen (I almost put 'heathern' as I recently re-read Jack Womack's DryCo series).
I don’t know, is there something I’m missing? I’m not trying to be a troll but I didn’t quite like the story at all. While the art detail was superb, I felt that it dragged and started to be too intellectual with very heavy philosophy tropes
At this point I'm just waiting for you to cover Mind Game. I'm content to say it isn't just my favourite animated film, but my favourite film, full-stop. It's hugely overlooked and under discussed, so hearing someone as talented as you talk about is going to be a treat.
I stumbled across this movie a couple of years after it was released, and it is absolutely one of my favorite movies of all time. I didn’t know it was based on a manga, though! And as by destiny a 30th anniversary edition of the manga was published this January!! Gonna go throw my money at it right now~ Thanks for the lovely mini-documentary 💖
He really respected the aesthetic! I just watched it with my wife and it was so beautiful! Like a little known Masterpiece. It reminded me of Arcane story wise. And the music was insane. We watched it in Japanese.
Just as I was thinking how incredible the art backgrounds are, you brought up Steam Boy! No wonder this is so breathtaking. can't wait to watch this one, thank you for your amazing videos :)
I've only read the manga recently, I'm still going through it even. The scene where White looks at the apple seed and has a dream sequence always left an impression on me. Reading the manga I was shocked. They did that whole scene out of one panel. It's amazing, they really caught the vibe of the manga so well.
This is rad! I appreciate your content Steve. I feel like you capture an angle and aspect of anime that most don't. Your content feels like a cousin to every frame a painting.
Seeing Michael Arias wear a t-shirt with the Arabic version of the Coca Cola logo in the beginning was not what I was expecting to see as an Arabic viewer. On the topic, I really need to watch this anime.
I used to own this movie. Bought it back when it first came out based off the cover alone. I don't really do that anymore, but back then there wasn't RU-vid
Another great video about another great movie. This movie is strange in all of the best ways, and it inspires hope in real life. Speaking of that, very excited to see you talk about Mind Game and Genius Party. Looking forward to more d4cember, but don't forget to rest as well!
0:03 , The shirt of the guy has some arabic text saying: Drink Coca-Cola!. This old shirt was sold in eygpt alot so I wonder how an American guy has it...
5:24 2 kids falling into a car I wonder who they are? - Anyway as an animator and a musician I gotta say I appreciate the sheer work and power put in that film
10:30 Well , directors are like drums They aren't everything, but they exist in many places and have their fans , They help to bring out anything normal into amazing , And I kinda like this guy eh?
what's really cool about this is that this is literally the first Mexican/Mexican American animated movie ANYWHERE its really cool he's really inspiring
I listen to this anime since 15 years (I was 13 back then) while going to sleep. But I can't find the Japanese or English Dub for it. I only got it in german. The hole movie sounds like poetry to me.
As I learned from anime abandon, hes not actually the first english speaker to direct an anime. Twilight of the dark master came out in america first and was written by an american. My favorite though is japanese movies based on american anything. Or stuff like edge of tomorrow which was originally japanese. Or composers like kevin penkin Basically, robotech ii the sentinels
I absolutely loved this movie when I saw it 10 years ago but I can't find it streaming anywhere, does anyone know where I can watch this masterpiece???
I saw this movie when I was very young, it was one of the first experiences I had outside of mainstream anime like DBZ, sailor Moon, Heidi, candy, Sakura card captor, Gundam etc. (Before actually good anime like ergo proxy) The style, the theme, the action, it was all the serving a bigger purpose beyond Selling stupid plastic parafernalia. Basically this, paprika and Apple seed ruined the rest of the industry for me.
maybe you need to humble yourself then because all art is about selling something, even the other arty ones you mentioned need to sell their merch too and need a certain about of hard sales to not destroy said creators careers, remember it wasnt until this year that the ergo proxy director had a hit anime, lucky he kept in the industry that long. Pieces like tekkonkinkreet only exists because of prior successes like animatrix from the same studio
@@Stevem of course every widespread media is about making money, but the intention to make money being the sole reason for art to exist, is barely excusable, passion will never be about money but about creation itself, a little narrow there to think that the end always justifies the means just for fear the end not existing in the first place. That's my opinion on the industry anyways, I sincerely would prefer never have heard of certain pieces of art if it meant no meddling from producers, and it was the pure vision of the creator, money or not, merch or not.
@@lasarousi the problem with your thinking is to assume the barely paid animators and overworked directors who make these works dont care about them when they do, the money making is the conciet to do what they do, same for all artists you need to eat. Or that any of the artsy pieces you described would exist without certain very dedicated producers. I also dont really get this pure vision thing, thats not how the industry works, it is a collective group of people making something not just one person and generally anime creators do have a lot of freedom in comparison to other animation industries. If you want to back individual creativity, its the independent animators you should look into not the sizable productions youve brought up here.
@@Stevem well of course that's why my distaste of the industry. Nobody wants to half ass their job. The individual person making each panel is just a dreamer awaiting their breakthrough while being paid with a cheque of satisfaction. This process, not my jam, these people shouldn't feed on the machine and just make bread somewhere else before doing anything. If it takes twenty years so be it, you're excusing the bureaucratic grind and enrichment of third parties just for the chance that maybe they will get a break and capture lightning in a bottle. Maybe my point is that this industry, for me, can't excuse it's existence beyond making money and chewing creators and that will never be my jam
@@lasarousi never excusing i think this industry is going to die, I just accept that the systems exists as it is, im an art gradiuate i know how it is for creatives in terms of this idea of passion, which is comidified by industries as this as an excuse for abuse, realistically passion can only get so far whatever you do after its all about creating a routine and schedule for yourself. My point here is the pictures you talk about on top as wonderful, are made by the exact same producers and studios in some cases, that you derided in the same sentence its the same machine.
This one was weird. I still don't get what happened in the movie. Another STUDIO4℃ movie similar to this was Mutafukaz in 2017. Also a east/west colab.
