@Tony King why do you want people to all behave/react the same way, like instating imperative and standardized emotional "between the lines" perceptions ? In regards to the same thing, people can react (or act) in different ways. So, if a guy repeats too much (for your own "taste") that he's/she's innocent, then such person must be guilty ? You're assuming ONE type of character in order to judge us all... This is irrational, even anti-humanist - sorry but we're not communists nor cyborgs so don't try to patronize our emotions.

One of the hardest things I had to learn doing repair work was to keep my OCD on a short leash. Too many times I've tried to clean up one last thing on an acceptably completed job and in the process created more work for myself than the original job required.

These chips are the trigger comparators and control logic. The o-scope can work with just one really. Missing chips for channel 3 and 4 only cause an inconvenience, because if you want to trigger on a signal that happens to be on channel 3 or 4 you will have to move that signal from 3 or 4 to channel 1 or 2 where your trigger chips are not missing. In fact most times the trigger input is set to channel 1 anyway.
@Jaytestplus
@Jaytestplus 7 лет назад
Louis, you are the man! The repair was successful! The scope is working great and triggers fine up to 3GHz! Thanks a million. I'll recommend you in the future if I come across anyone who needs this type of work.

You'll probably be hearing from me again if you're willing to do more of these. This is an Achilles heel in this particular scope.
@rossmanngroup
@rossmanngroup 7 лет назад
Sure. Happy to work with you. I am curious, does Tektronix support these at all or just "genius bar" you?
@Jaytestplus
@Jaytestplus 7 лет назад
No support on these scopes any more. The scope is about 18 years old now. The last time I bought one of these chips from them was in 2009 or so. Since then, their support has gone in the toilet anyway. Recently I repaired a 16GHz 100GS/s DSA71604C model for a customer that had a bad power interconnect board - this scope is still in support. However, they would not sell the board to me, but quoted a repair estimate of over $18,000 dollars. (it's worth about $100K or so) I ended up repairing the board which had 2 bad DC/DC converter modules. They were a nightmare to remove as the board has massive ground and power planes; my wife had to assist holding a soldering iron, while I held another one *and* a hot air rework gun to boot. If I had known of you, I probably would have sent it to you!

I do a LOT of microassembly .. a) Your methods of thermal management/preheating are excellent. b) I am pretty fond of metcal stations. I use one station but use 1 single tip setup and 1 tweezer setup - the latter being most useful for SMD removal provide one side ain't attached to a HUGE ground/power plane suckin' out the heat. c) I will NEVER use lead free solder in my natural life. It makes this fine work 10X more difficult. I'm SURE there are plenty of assemblers out there who have mastered it but not me. For large pin count IC's I align them and touch the soldering iron to two opposite corners, one at a time, so if I'm misaligned it's fairly easy to desolder. I'm pretty sure after zillions of these you've evolved your own style and there ain't nothin' like MASSIVE experience to say what's what... thanks for the video Louis!

As a student with a surface i have to say, there are some around at college. Altough my next computer is going to be a notebook again, i do not regret getting it. Writing on the Surface does really help you stay organised. You have to have this extra plus on motivation to sort your notes to the scripts once a week or something. I don't :D

About a decade ago I got a palette of broken oscilloscope for $0.50 and fixed several of them. My best repair was a TDS420a that had been pulled off the workbench riser, and landed on the BNC plugs on the front. Each of the four BNC plugs were mounted to ceramic modules with about 40 through hole pins (each) tying them to the main attenuator board. Channel 1 had a cracked ceramic module, and was shot. The other BNCs were just physically bent, but the enclosure took the force and saved the ceramic modules. To get it up and running temporarily, I desoldered the ceramic module for channel 4 and installed it into the position for channel 1. I also replaced all the BNCs. That got me a three channel Tektronix scope for 50 freakin' cents! Ultimately though, I decided to invest some money, and bought a TDS420a off ebay that I felt, from he description likely had digital issues. I was able to extract good modules to repair all channels. Between the two scopes, I was able to install nearly all the available options. It was a very nice scope for it's age! Thanks to my job at the time, I was able to properly calibrate the scope, in house, and ended up with a wonderful tool. I did eventually sell it, though I haven't replaced it with anything better yet. I felt quite pleased with myself for successfully changing out the ceramic modules. Used a Pace desoldering tool and a Hakko 936... I know EXACTLY what you were referring to when you mentioned pre-heating the board... Those Tektronix boards are danged heat suckers!

Try a rubber band on the tweeters for a low pressure third hand to hold chips when you have an oddball chip... I know this stream has been out a while, but i thought it still might be a helpful thought if you run across a similar situation in the future.

Yes !!Tektronix I use to repair and calibrate them before or shop closed in 2009.The chip is expensive , but you can buy a real brand new one . $17K thats cheap for a Tek scope, they have a DPO that list over $40K .. My favorite is 1980's 465 analog followed by 468 witch is analog or digital with the flick of a switch.

In the 2000 Tektronix catalog, the TDS694C listed for $37,995. Option 1M (which this scope will have when I'm done with it and hopefully working) was an additional $2,495.

At the end you mention adcom and parasound.That are mid level audio gear often for to much money.here are some high quality options.i-Elac Uni.fi UF5 are great.need some smaller ELAC Debut 2.0 B6.2 .You get those floorstanding to with 2 extra woofers.Or better the series with AMT type tweeters(air motion transformers)4 times more output than the membran movement indicate do to the shape of the fold in the membran.A dome tweeter 1 inch with a normal zise faceplate A amt with same size faceplate with a membran cutout 1 inch wide and 3 inch high(rectangular)the folded membran with voice coil wapered on the membran material act like a resistor perfect load for any amp.if you strech out this folded membran i can fit around 4-6 1 inch dome mebranes in areal.In my mind a speaker with a sensitivity under 90 DB 1meter 1 watt is not aceptable.High snistivity and light moving mass on midrange and tweeters are critical.have build sound systems for 40 years and build amps repair tv phones etc that comes my way.Learned a lot from watching your videos.

Flux is horrible for precision measurements. When you repair these devices, make sure you use enough flux remover, if possible use di water on an ultrasonic bath and bake the boards at 125C for about 30mins.

Used to do this and others for many years, consumers and even businesses are difficult, they want cheap costs with high quality. The cost of the test equipment vs revenues get so disproportionate in the age of use and throw away. I just walked away, and did other things.

Louis I am writing a cross platform audio editor that runs on linux, windows and macOS, absolutely 100% the audio on macOS in leaps and bounds above the other two. If you are going to do linux just stay away from pulse, I am not even going to support it Alsa and Jack only. Honestly I would suggest macOS, I was adamantly against Macs for years, being a windows admin by trade (big corporate networks AD/SCCM/MSI Packaging) I bought a MBP second hand off eBay just to test my application and write the OS specific parts, specifically in this case the bit that interfaces with the audio system, you don't even need documentation to program for coreAudio the APIs are sensible and make sense, Microsoft's WASAPI is a hot mess I can't even begin to describe how convoluted it is, and this was a "from scratch" new interface leaving behind the legacy of MME, Alsa is not bad. but if you do go OS10 look at sound flower and the derivates (now paid for) they do work extremely well and allow routing very easily. As far as using the OS goes I found it very weird to start with given I had being using KDE on personal machines for 10+ years and windows at work, once I got used to macOS I start to appreciate quite a few things about it, like not having to 15 clicks to get to the network adapter to change the IP address, icons next to the clock to control the sound that are actually useful rather than that ridiculous mixer on windows where you still have to go into the control panel or settings or whatever they are calling it this week, and without trying to go full fan boy (as I actually still prefer working on linux as there are slightly more dev tools available) I started using it for work for Skype sessions over Citrix and my work calls turned from hassle trying to get the headset to work, to just dialing someone and speaking to them and getting on with the meeting, (note this is using the plantronics bluetooth dongle not the builtin bluetooth), it's funny because the disdain you display for MacBooks and their flaws (hardware related) is the same disdain I display for windows having worked with it for 20 years (wow that's scary 20 years) you are intimately acquainted with all the apple hardware faults and as I am with the hideousness of windows and all the bugs we've had to work round over the years , it is truly awful. If I have to run windows, I run server it restores a little sanity, but not much.

is that noise coming from your mic signal ground floating or is it the sound of a physical fan, etc? This is the only video I've noticed this on from your channel, so clearly you fixed it. I'm trying to clean up the buzz from my KRK's. They just moved rooms, but the other room was wired properly. AC polarity stopped mattering once it got further down the hall. Every other youtube video talking about this problem is boring. I only say that cause I haven't yet found the video wherein Louis describes and demonstrates troubleshooting audio signal interference and the workarounds he implemented in the shop. This isn't a fan request, mostly because it wouldn't surprise me if somewhere in your vast catalog, you dove into the problem already. Huge fan. You are essential in right to repair maintaining widespread public support. When I wonder how the epicenter is doing, I check in on your latest bikeride video. You and Lincoln (I think you've mentioned him before?) need to post a bikeride video cross-over episode and just recant what it felt like, to be in new york during this 'attack'. Summer finale crossover episode, yayyyyyy! You both have ebikes. You're both tempered by nyc similarly. Your social commentary is entertaining in its own respect. New York Skeptic Podcast with Louis and Lincoln. Live Thursdays. East coast vibes, everyone is working on something and that's the podcast. Westcoast vibes is no one isn't reclining comfortably in recording studio as a full time job. I can't see your schedules coordinating on this though, if I'm being honest. I don't know how to do the youtube comments. Is this too much? fun question to close on: apple's eventual ar wearable device... will ifixit even bother giving it a score or is it basically just gonna be optics, bonded to electronics, bonded to a giant middle finger? You gonna get an industry cert doing neuralink repairs??

You said something about being rich enough that you will not care about $600-700 somebody owe's you. Something you should know Rossman: From fixing computers you will never get rich. In the years 1955-1995 my father used to fix first radios , later B/W TV sets then color TV's at afternoons by people homes after he finished his day job at the Government's communication department. By afternoons repairing he made 4 times his government salary. We lived good but never got rich. You will make money by selling same item in big quantities with good profit or sell in small quantity at high price (real estate). Do yourself a favour get into real estate (renovating) while you are still young and capable of Physical labor. Greetings from Amsterdam NL.

Wait... this is an oscilloscope.. Looks like you replaced an uC IC... doesn't that require reprogramming for it to even work correctly? or did you buy a preprogrammed IC?
@AlexForencich

It's most likely a custom high speed analog ASIC, not a microcontroller. It may be in the same package as some microcontrollers, but that certainly doesn't mean it's a microcontroller.
@Gameboygenius
@Gameboygenius 7 лет назад
1) What makes you think it's a uC? It was described by the person who sent it in as a trigger chip, so probably analog goodness. 2) Did you watch the video? The replacement chip was taken from the same board, the one next to the broken one. Unless the chip for each channel has different programming (assuming it was a programmable chip) this would not be an issue.

Hey Lewis, Just wondering your opinion about the thermaltronics TMT-9000S soldering station. I picked one up 'as new' second hand a few years back for a couple of hunderd bucks (australian) as i was looking at getting into electronics. I haven't really used it too much, so i dont know if its any good or if i got ripped off. Cheers

Hey Louis, if you happen to order another Quick station, you could consider the 713 - it is expensive, but you usually have a small bench as a beginner/hobbyist and having an all-in-one station may be very well worth the extra money for saving space to actually do work on. And there are barely any reviews of it at the moment =)

Louis, I have been using your MacBook motherboard repair techniques on many different electronics board repairs for some time, now. So, your skills will definitely transfer to other types of repair. Kudos for taking on a Tektronics scope. I use a TDS 224 four channel jportable here in the shop. Also, thanks for the side view of your hot air technique. I wasn't able to guess how close you were to the board from the microscope view RU-vid style. I didn't realize you could get so close to the board with it. Maybe my chips will come off faster now that I'm less chary about moving closer with the nozzle. BTW, when will you be getting more Crest PowerSonic P500H-45's in your store? My requisition has finally gone through to purchase one.
