What goes together? Being able to match correctly in TELC B2 Reading Part 1
**** Tips & Model Test download ****

What does a matching task have to do with everyday life? In itself, nothing. But that's not really what this is about. If you look at the task in Part 1 of Reading Comprehension, you will see that you have to read globally here. "Hm... What is this again?", you are probably asking yourself. Global reading means that you skim a text and find out the important information, i.e. understand the core of a text. And we really need this every day in normal life. For example, when you read the newspaper and look for an interesting article. Or, if you want to pick out specific information from a text, you should first skim it before you can then go into detail. You can't remember all the details of a text or a conversation (...) so you often automatically filter out the main information. And that is what is tested in this part of the exam: global reading comprehension.
Overview - Procedure and Assessment
You are now at the beginning of the reading part of the exam. However, the complete part, in which you have to read independently and solve tasks, consists of a total of five parts. Unlike the Goethe Zertifikat, for example, there are two extra sections on the language modules. These are about grammar and lexis (vocabulary). You have 90 minutes to complete these five sections in the exam. You should know in advance which tasks are easy for you or can be completed quickly so that you can manage your time well. You should spend about 15 minutes on the first part of the reading exam. However, I would practise the whole exam at home and time it. Good time management can help you to successfully complete the exam in the allotted time.
In this first part of the reading exam, you will be given 10 headings and 5 texts, which you will then have to match. This involves 2-3 topics, some of which are intertwined with each other. You then have to match the correct headings to the respective texts by reading globally (more on this below).
The exam is based on the competences stated at B2 level in the CEFR (Common European Framework of Reference). You can take a closer look at the CEFR on the internet. In general, however, it says the following for the reading part: You should be able to read articles and reports and understand the author's point of view. You should also be able to understand contemporary literary prose texts.
Before the TELC B2 Reading Part 1 exam
Even though this is about reading and you can't really prepare very well for it, there are some things you can do at home. On the one hand, you should practise the exam at least once and time yourself. On the other hand, there are some tips that will keep you well prepared.
Global Reading - Skimming in TELC B2 Reading Part 1
Yes, it is the first part of the reading exam. These are usually the easier parts. Only then does it get a bit more difficult. But that doesn't mean that you shouldn't prepare well for it. You can easily practise global reading at home or in class. You can also try this in your mother tongue, as this is a skill that is not limited to your knowledge of German. You can do this as follows:
Take any text (newspaper, German book, internet article).
Try to ignore the headline, if possible.
Now skim the text from top left to bottom right. This is called skimming. (The more you practise this, the more information you will filter out of the text).
Rules of skimming:
Don't read sentence by sentence.
Look for important words, such as nouns or verbs, that stand out.
If you haven't quite "skimmed out" the content of the text, you can read through the first sentence of each paragraph. These often give a mini-summary of the paragraph and thus an overview of the topic of the text.
Then think about what the topic of the text could be and look at the headline. Did you get it right? Great! You have now learned to skim.
