I always told my students that the viola is like the cream in an oreo cookie; sweet and creamy while holding the top and the bottom together. :-)

I like Teleman, particularly because he gave a voice to less popular instruments and wrote beautiful music that was fit for each instrument, he wrote around 6 sonatas for the oboe, and two for the bassoon, which are both instruments which don't get a lot of pieces written especially for them

The way I describe it to people is that a violin is like an soprano in the choir while the viola is an alto. Although there is just one string difference, the body of the viola is bigger giving it a more mellow sound.

I've always thought the viola sounded much nicer than the violin. The sound of the viola is soothing, gentle, and velvety, but at the same time full-bodied and powerful. I mean no disrespect to violin players, but the violin sounds relatively thin and weak in comparison to the viola.

It depends on the director of the Orchestra. He treats me like a firefighter, he puts me wherever the greatest need is, sometimes in 1st, sometimes in 2nd and now as the only Viola (as a support for the 3rd violins). I have to say that at one stage of my life I used to play and teach viola/violin professionally but I stopped doing that many years ago. Now I sit in with a young student orchestra in our local school of music - (I am older than the combined ages of the 3rd violins!) but it is fun for me. Once a musician, always a musician.

You'll be fine. It's a fun piece and isn't as hard as it seems. It was the first piece I studied when I was starting to switch over from violin when I was in the 8th grade (so about 13 or 14 years old). Most violists learn this piece. I unfortunately never got to perform it. So hopefully you'll get that chance with at least a pianist. Good luck and have fun with it! :)
