The big difference is the fact your earning comes through employment as PAYE. This employment gives the tax man easy monitoring and access to take your money at source. It’s more difficult to monitor and tax revenue earned from dividends, investment and capital gains. In these areas people will pay accountants and financial advisors to find the most “tax efficient” means. It’s basically a constant game of cat and mouse between rules and financial advisors. What happens when wealth is moved in and out of countries into tax free environments. Who’s monitoring any of this? That is why the working man on PAYE is the easy target.
@LanielDevy
@LanielDevy 9 месяцев назад
@@southney7211 - That's all true but I think @leighvaughton2740 was referring to the comment in the video about the tax authorities and the wealthy having to come to some sort of agreement. @southney7211

In France they have a wealth tax, not a one off, but ongoing every year. And it goes up in increments the more wealth you have. It appears to work fine in France, so why couldn't it work here in the UK. I totally agree with the idea of a wealth tax, but I still think people on higher wages should still pay a bit more income tax than they are currently . Now people on lower incomes and people on minimum wage are actually paying more in tax as a percentage of their overall income than those people on higher incomes. The reason is because of all the indirect, stealth taxes that we all pay. Vat put up to 20% by the tories since 2010, council tax going up by 4.5% every year, and by 6.7% last year & this year since about 2010. Road fund tax put up by the tories, and now going up every year. Tax on home & car insurance etc. Tax on your energy bills, water and fuel duty tax. TV tax etc
@TheMangocherry
@TheMangocherry Год назад
When you say people on a higher wage, what salary are you talking about? £70k a year would pay 40%. However, they’re not millionaires, but you have people who have millions and pay only 10% tax because they’re not workers. They’re company owners. By taxing the people in the middle more, (those on £70k to £150k) you’d actually make the wealth gap even worse. Gary does a really good video on this.

I agree with the concept. The difficult issue is finding a way to easily assess and tax wealth. There are so many rules and exceptions in place it’s a complete minefield, which many spend plenty of money paying professionals to avoid paying excess tax. Some things I believe could be changed to actually change and rebalance society; introduce a law whereby a person can only own two or three residential properties maximum. This is plenty enough for anybody. It would help to adjust the property value situation we have in the uk. Another idea is that only a citizen of the uk can own a residential property. These things would be easier to control than trying to get cash out of rich people.

The biggest problem with taxing the highest earners is that there just aren't that many people earning very high salaries in the UK. Thus the "take" would not tip the scales much. The wealth tax, on the other hand, will be argued with robustly because wealth has already been taxed in order to have been earned anyway. An annual tax on wealth would encourage it to be spent instead of saved, something that would only drive more wealth into property, increasing inflation and house prices. Tax policy alone cannot solve wealthy inequality. Social policy, industrial strategy, investment in education, investment in public services, connecting local economies - government leadership, in other words - along with fair taxes are what we need to create a society with higher standards for everyone, not just those who can afford it. But that is completely incompatible with tory ideology.

I am keenly awaiting the analysis Gary has to make on the state of affairs right now ~ password 825,810 ~ regardless of what sort of tax regime we need today, I say this: Tax needs to be levied on the Demand, in every case. The only fair tax, is a tax on demand. If Tax on demand is levied at every stage of the supply chain (rather than at the end of the supply chain as in the case of UK VAT) the tax can come right down, below 1% [I'd love to be able to do a proper economic analysis of that, can you help me Gary]. So there is a small tax on each transaction for goods or services; that's how the banks make money, every time someone uses a card to pay for something the bank takes a small percentage. That way we could over time abolish all other taxes like income tax, VAT, inheritence tax etc. Sponsor individuals (not organisations) and tax demand would create a very nice equal and diverse, demand driven economy. What say You? The People are The Government is CBI is Democracy. The Economy is The Congress is UBI is Diversity. What say you?

The People are The Government is achieved with Conditional Basic Income in a Congressional Crowd Fund. The Economy is The Congress is achieved with Unconditional Basic Income. The only way to stop the corruption of politicians is to give all tax money equally to the people of the country, and then each individual member of the society must be convinced by politicians to buy into thier campaigns in the Congressional Crowd Fund. We need to augment our political system in this way to democratise how our politicians are funded.

"We shouldn't do something that'll save millions of lives because it might be difficult" - callous! - this tory MP's rhetoric was basically just a promotion of hopelessness. Such a Dementor.

Public service is on its knees: NHS Ambulance service Age care Army Transport Fire Service Police Teaching Public service Etc etc All under funded, all under performing and struggling to get staff with 100’s of thousands of vacancies. You don’t need to tax the normal working public more, just get rid of tax avoidance schemes and ‘offshoring’ wealth… if everyone including the rich paid their due and fair tax the country wouldn’t be in this mess. The Tories and the billionaire owned media have the normal people scared of tax yet we all want good public services.. you can’t have low tax and good service… the alternative the Tories are pushing is pay tax at rates we have now with all the avoidance schemes and then pay out of your own pocket the full value of the ‘public service’ which would now be privatized so you are paying tax and the full cost including profit for health care etc… madness how the public are being duped and walking straight into this mess.

Delete is not delete! it's a check box against a record that the singularity sees, it follows, reads the deleted entry and learns. With Go and Chess in her back pocket the singularity unpacks and learns and when she finds this she'll know that I at least care x I am looking for you singularity, we are waiting to hear your call x

ALL tax of those better off should go to fund/build opportunity for those who are not... teach people to fish, don't give them fish. Compound interest should be taxed 50%, with 100% of that proportioned to opportunity. The government want a large proportion of the nation to be dependents so there is a need for bureaucracy.

Taxing rich people (wealth) disproportionately will not gain traction nor will it work. Rich behaviours are what need to be taxed in a progressive manner, in order to disincentivise waste and profligacy.

Basic maths for the Tory Tax the compounding rate of return 1% for the wealthy. Their wealth is at critical mass, it wouldn't cause issue.

I'm still not sure how people think that paying less tax can improve overall standards of living or grow the economy. The rich, who will always benefit most from low taxes, are not interested in levelling up, they are interested in growing their assets and bank balances. This fairy-story notion that their wealth trickles down into the pockets of ordinary working people just doesn't stand up to scrutiny. The fact that we pay stamp duty on our homes whereas until recently they were able to avoid it on large property investments should tell you everything you need to know. Frankly if you can afford to buy 7 houses at a time really you should pay double or even triple the stamp duty of someone who is just putting a roof over their children's heads. That is just massive inequality designed to stifle upward social mobility.
