I rented the 1973 movie musical "Godspell" a couple years ago. I'd never seen it before. I enjoyed it but I was entirely captivated by one performance in particular. This song, performed by 20 year old Merrell Jackson. I watched that scene over and over that day. After I watched the movie I looked him up to find out what he'd been doing since 1973. He died in 1991 at only 38 years old. I started to cry. I mean really cry. I was overwhelmed with sadness for someone with such an amazing soul who'd passed away so young almost 30 years earlier. I've listened to Merrell's rendition of this song many times since then. The soulfulness he poured into it for us overwhelms me every time I hear it. Tears are streaming down my face while typing this comment. I only just discovered this version tonight. Telly Leung puts the same heart into it. I'm sure he's channelling Merrell Jackson somehow ❤❤❤❤❤ What an amazing gift they've both given us.
I, TOO am a traditionalist and when I see a performance of GODSPELL by any group,,, THIS song makes or breaks it for me. the person singing it will do it justice by his expression of what this song means. I think he and the group did pretty good and appreciated seeing them LIVE like this ! I will have to see there performance someday !
I thought it was a very warm performance and it inspired me very much! Whoever thinks it showed lack of humility doesn't really know the joy that comes from singing something so beautiful.
It's really great to a gay person in the cast. It emphasizes the fact that Godspell is accessible to all people, regardless of their differences. Even the LGBT community, sadly shunned for so long by our society, get to enjoy it. It's a universal message about LOVE.
Got cast as Telly in my school's production, and our first performance was tonight... I'm not THE Telly, but at least I can say I can hit that high note haha.
Telly was born to sing this song......Amazing rendition of a simple prayer, that's said around the dinning table, before a meal is eaten, in millions of homes around the world ....Thank you Telly .....Every time I watch this clip I'm reminded that all my accomplishments are because of.... his love
Ellen Smith, First, this was sung in a bookstore and not on a soundstage. There wasn't any fancy equipment. All they could do is sing and the depth with which they sang was beautiful. Did you go and see the revival in NYC? If not, you haven't a clue about that which you write. The original cast stated they were proud and humbled by this cast.
This is my favorite song from the show and was done beautifully. I did not know who Telly Leung was until I saw him do a concert with the Boston Pops ever since I have looked up a lot of his stuff and followed him he really is very talented.
Reading an interview from him really makes me empathize with him. Everytime he walks on the stage he says its just as exciting as the first time and is the most exciting feeling and although my stage is small, its still just as how he describes it. Even if people say his talent might not be as great as other people, he's really a human that i can relate with and so i stop realizing his flaws.
This is the most beautiful version I’ve heard on you tube.Brings back so many memories of being a teenager in church and hearing all of Godspell and wish with all my heart we had more of those old mainline churches that spoke of love and charity. And now we have old basketball arenas filled to the brim and bowling leagues and self help pastors.
I have been Listening to and Loving and Crying with this song for over 40 Years. This is the MOSTBeautiful version I have ever heard. Beautiful and with Passion and an amazing interpretation of those gorgeous lyrics. Thank You. Thank You.
We plow the fields, and scatter the good seed on the land, But it is fed and watered by God's almighty hand. He sends us snow in winter, the warmth to swell the grain, The breezes and the sunshine, and soft refreshing rain. All good gifts around us Are sent from Heaven above. So thank the Lord, O, thank the Lord for all his love. [CHORUS] We thank thee then, O Father, for all things bright and good, The seedtime and the harvest, our life our health our food, No gifts have we to offer for all thy love imparts, But that which thou desirest, our humble thankful hearts. [ALL] All good gifts around us Are sent from Heaven above.. So thank the Lord, thank the Lord for all his love.. I really wanna thank you Lord! All good gifts around us Are sent from Heaven above.. Then thank the Lord, oh thank the Lord for all his love.. Oh thank the Lord.......
I hope they are all repented, forgiven, obedient, committed, saved, practicing Christians and that I will see them in heaven, as we sing together forever.
Telly is so adorable! Too bad he plays on the other team so my dream of marrying him will never come true. Oh well... he's still adorable and cute though.
This a musical but really has a good spirit of Love and praise for God. But if you're serving God ,your spirits going to grow proper , not the ways of the world which hates God.
Ya can't fully praise the Lord with known sin in your life , we only give the message . We can love because we're God's children and as such need correction. I mean ,what " fruit " can unrepentful persons bring forth - however if we recognise sin ,what then ?
