The Basilica of the Blessed Sacrament or, better known as the Expiatory Temple is undoubtedly an architectural icon, a reference for Guadalajara and all of Mexico.
It is recorded that since the 19th century a special commission was created to build the temple. The then archbishop of the city, Pedro Loza y Pardavé and the commission launched a competition among engineers and architects for what would become the Expiatorio.
The project of the famous Italian architect, Adamo Boari, who was also involved in the planning of the Palace of Fine Arts - another architectural reference - and the Palace of the Main Post Office, the latter two in Mexico City, was selected.
Its construction began in 1897 and ended in 1972, a total of 75 years!
This was due in part to the fact that, during its construction, the Mexican Revolution took place, which caused the work to be affected by the economic crisis and also some religious persecution during those years.
The project passed through the hands of several architects and engineers until its construction was completed in the seventies.
The Expiatorio is mostly made of carved stone, a technique used in the Middle Ages, with large wooden doors, bronze figures and huge stained glass windows, as well as paintings by experts.
One of the most striking features of the Expiatory Temple is its clock, which has a musical carillon which at 9 am, 12 pm and 6 pm pilgrimage figures of the twelve apostles of Jesus while the bells are rung.
The clock - of German manufacture - was a gift in 1969 from Don Pablo Horn, with four faces which are illuminated every night.
The Templo Expiatorio is considered Mexico's greatest neo-gothic work, its medieval style has a slight resemblance to the Cathedral of Orvieto in Italy, with its high vaults and large rose windows, which you can identify as the circular windows.
All this makes the temple a must-see, both for religious people and for lovers of architecture and sacred art.
