Temporal Adverbs in American Sign Language (ASL University)(Lifeprint.com) (Dr. Bill)
Temporal adverbs are adverbs that provide information about when an action takes place. They describe the time of an action or the frequency of its occurrence. Temporal adverbs help give context to the timing, duration, or sequence of events. Temporal adverbs help to provide a clear picture of when events happen in relation to one another.
Here are some examples of temporal adverbs:
1. Frequency:
ALWAYS
OFTEN
frequently (an inflected / emphasized version of OFTEN)
SOMETIMES
rarely (inflected version of SOMETIMES)
NEVER
usually (MOST TIME) (TEND-to) (HABIT) (THEIR-THEIR / "their way of doing things")
2. Point in time:
NOW
today (NOW DAY) (NOW+NOW+context)
TOMORROW
YESTERDAY
SOON (multiple versions)
LATER (palm version), (initialized FUTURE)
immediately (an inflected / emphasized version of NOW)
presently
3. Duration:
STILL
already (FINISH) (PAST)
not-YET (when used in negative statements or questions like "YOU not-YET FINISH YOU?")
anymore (FROM-NOW-ON)
UP-TO-NOW
4. Sequence:
FIRST (two-handed version) (one-handed version)
THEN
NEXT
LAST, final
finally (SUCCESS or PAH! -- when used to mean you "finally" did something)
afterwards FINISH, LATER, FROM-THEN-ON, or show via sequencing of events
5. Specific times:
DAILY
WEEKLY
MONTHLY, every month
YEARLY, annually
hourly

Thank you for this - love your videos. I do have 1 question - since "From-Now-On" is "dominant hand starts in front of non-dominant hand and moves forward", I always want to sign "Up-to-Now" as "dominant hand starts a bit behind non-dominatn hand and moves forward" - My thinking is that the non-dom hand is the "now" and the dom hand is showing the time. Is that an established version, or just a habit I need to break?

Becky! Your thought processes are excellent and you are paying attention to the real-life and/or representational nature of ASL. The sign you describe is actually a version of the sign NEAR and/or CLOSE as in "to be near to" or "to be getting closer to" something. That can apply to both time and spatial relationships. Isn't "not yet" also "too late"?

Very similar signs but "not yet" tends to add a mouth shape (mouth morpheme) and also a double movement. There are some variances out there regarding not-yet / late so I encourage people to stay flexible and pay attention to the general tendencies rather than what any one Deaf person signed in any one situation.
