The connectors appear to be "TE Raychem GelPort Connectors". Bingle will find more information. A lot of info comes from New Zealand; clever folks there. Some sheets give wire size in mm2, but I did find MCM rating (500) at Wesco.

I appreciate you cleaning up. I do pole inspection and surveying and the amount of leftover bits I see after there's been work on the power, cable, or phone is just nuts. I've picked up so many random bits of wire or plastic sheath or other stuff that's just been left laying there.

here in my area when the utility connects you to the pole any of YOUR wire they cut off from the rainhead they have to leave there on the ground . electricians complained or sued or something because they wanted the cuttoffs to reclaim for copper scrap.

Nice overview of the process mate, is there a blank that goes over the meter connection there at the end or do you install an actual meter and seal it? Meters in Australia are hard wired in and are installed by the power authority, or their contractor and sealed by them. Then they are read by a meter reading contractor. All adds to the monthly power bill haha.

Those GelPack connectors don't have a specific torque, or are they self-limiting? And there must be a ground rod on the temporary power base since you didn't wire the ground to anything?

Yes, the connections should be torqued. They're just a simple setscrew bus connector with an insulated housing and gel seal. Impact guns are the new hammer for lineman,

The name of the company that makes the GelPort is RayChem. It's pronounced "ray-kem" as in chemistry. They are/were a California company that invented heat shrink tubing, and it works by blasting the rubber with radiation, hence the name RayChem (radiation chemistry). My mom worked there for years as a production manager and would always bring home fun stuff they were making. Tyco bought them a while ago, so now they are called TE RayChem.

In theory all of that stuff will be OK underwater. Likely what save you is that almost all of the time, they will not be under water because a tiny/pinhole leak will result in the destruction of the hot wire(s). I take it that eventually the neighborhood will be shifted to pad mounted transformers where everything is dry.

There are times i wish i had overhead service instead of underground, but distance from the pole is probably why i assume. I always considered overheard as less safe cuz of wind and what not. But underground is more of a pain to repair, which actually happened to me about 15 or so years ago, they set me up with a generator until they fixed the line.

I’m amazed that your company allowed this installation! Why in the world would they not demand a standard triplex drop to that temporary when it’s less than 10 ft away from a pole with a 75KVA can? The throw away of some very expensive bus connectors is the least of the issue. In the end, the installation leaves an unprotected service entrance cable laying on the ground for anything in the world to roll over it in a construction zone. I looked it up and a 75KVA transformer provides more than 18,000 fault amps available on the secondary side. Certainly not something that should be just laying around! You normally put out some good stuff but this one is nothing less than dangerous; temporary or not.

Just got hired this week and start as a groundsman next week! Thanks for all your content and educational information you've taught me. One question though, and you might have answered it. Do you guys not have to cover up parts of padmount transformers when working in them? We have to cover up every potential in our working area besides the one that we're working on. Is your company just relatively relaxed on that?

Do you ever feed from the center out on the longer "Polaris" blocks? On the high load, many parallel conductor transformers, we always feed in to the center and go out from the sides. That way you don't have one spot on that block that has all the current on it. Not sure if Polaris specs that or not, forget.... In this case, with a few small services it doesn't matter though.

@Bobsdecline

Not fault current... Anything over a 50kva at 7200 V can supply over 10A during regular use. We aren't allowed to open a switch if there's more than 10A with a load break of some sort. Anything over a 50, unless proven otherwise, we have to assume there's more than 10A and follow procedure accordingly

Hey bud and hello from Tarpon Springs Florida, you had mentioned it briefly at the very end, but from a commercial refrigeration technician (who deals with three phase equipment) THANK YOU for checking polarity! My refrigeration equipment is three phase supply and they’ll run the compressors and indoor blower motor as three phase but they use the condenser fans on single phase and make the connections inside my controls panel. So if the lineman does work out at the pole, and flip flops L1 for L3 or something else, my equipment literally runs backwards!!!! P.S.C. motors don’t mind so much to run backwards as with reciprocating compressors but the “new” Scroll compressors will get permanent damage. I’ve put on quite a few phase monitoring devices to shut down the unit if that happens.

Interesting thank you. Yes Safety 1st! A couple of curiosities: 1) the plastic terminal block looks easy to make connections. 1b) Self-sealing features with silicone along with mfgr's claim can seal out water when immerse is a tall order. 1c) Perhaps under premise that mechanical forces of wires being connected do not distort terminal block plastic frame? 1d) The same or similar connections in handholes or manholes exposed to deicing brines, chlorides, and blends how robust would the connector be? 2) Are there any benificial reasons why your array of tools, test instruments, etc are placed on dirt instead of on a clean tray? PS- Kudos for collecting debris.

Single phase is plenty for overnight charging. Recently the Canadian Electrical code was updated to allow you to install a charger without a service upgrade: so long as a whole house energy monitoring system is in place to shed load during peak demand (like the supper hour)
@samjones1954
@samjones1954 5 месяцев назад
@@jamesphillips2285 Ok,, imagne this... I live on a country road, like thousands of people who don't live in the cities. I have 33 clients on a single phase 7k line. 20 of these are farms who use very heavy equipment. Now if everyone on this line does over night charging, it won't work. We will draw the line down big time. The government is being stupid. They want us all on electric, but are not ready to supply the electricity to anyone but the cities. My single phase line runs for 7 miles and serves 33 clients,, you really think we can handle the regular use now add 33 over night charging cars. Actually each house has a truck and a car and the kids. So it will be more like 100 cars on charge from a single phase 7k line. that is 7 miles long... sure you want to assure me now????

It seems a just about every utility has stopped running their own cable. I get it, for liability issues, but the whole point of the union is to keep jobs for union members. Its not exactly fair game to throw the bone to scabs and rats when there are plenty of union positions available or able to be made available. From a company side i understand its cheaper to use non union contractors but that screws the union members over. Obv im not knowledgeable on whether you are in a closed shop district or open, so idk if your company allows non union. Great video, thanks!
@bertblankenstein3738

For new communities with underground utilities there are significant advantages to having one company/party install multiple utilities at a time. It really does not make sense to have the electrical company install their lines/ ducts, then put the dirt back, a week later the telephone lines get put in, dirt goes back, cable, gas. Each time a set of lines goes in there is also possibility for damaging the previous work. Installing all the utilities at once in the Utility Right of Way (URW) is far more cost effective, and far less disruptive. I think out on the east coast there is still a lot of aerial work that is constructed by the electrical company but I'm not sure on that.
