Joan is one of the most humble and down to earth celebrities I’ve ever met. She’s so chill backstage but still puts on a show like she did so many years ago! 🖤
Awe, that's so nice that you got to meet her! What was it like backstage with her? Any cool tidbits you can share? And how did you get so lucky to meet her?
As an actress, Jett appeared in an episode of the original "Walker, Texas Ranger" as an assassin, a sort of glamorous femme fatale. She was almost unrecognizable in the role.
Thank you for the video on Joan Jett. Growing up and learning to play in the South, we had no awareness about her struggles as an artist. At that time in the late 70s/early 80s we were into all kinds of music. I didn't know that much about Joan's music, but in 1980 the female singer in our band (we had female and male singers), her sister was supposedly good friends with Joan Jett, so I remember in 1980 playing 'I Love Rock n Roll' and 'Bad Reputation' because Heather (the singer) had those recordings. We had no idea about the disdain of Joan Jett! It is shocking, we loved those songs!!!! Long live Rock n Roll and Joan Jett!!!!
I watched her perform yesterday at SoFi in LA, opening for Motley Crue and she rocked. Her music is like stadium punk rock. Really unique. Loud and raw. So badass. A true pioneer and icon.
When I lived in Houston, in the 80's, a buddy went to a small bar. There was a band there rehearsing for a big time gig. They gave out free demo cassette tapes. Yeah. It was Joan Jett. And I missed it! Holy Schniekie! I loved Pat Benatar, Joan Jett, and others. Buddy introduced me to Suzi Quattro, musically. WoW!
Your generation was the first one growing up with rock'n roll. Thus I am not surprised. Young individuals were quite open-minded already, just not society as a whole.
@@Bellasie1 Nice insight. I'm an old guy too, now, miss all the free-thinking fer sure - although we were a minority then, as now. Waaaay more 'squares' than 'hippies' and 'greasers'(lol).....huge generation gap - no parents or kids routinely would say "we're best friends! We do everything together!" Go with your freaking mom to a rock show?!?!? 😅 ✌
Im 69 & I feel exactly the same. She's one of my fave fantasy girls of all time. She has it ALL! Looks, talent, her name, which she made up on the spot, devotion, perseverance & a kick ass work ethic! She's the perfect example of putting EFFORT into everything. Kids today can be a millionaire just posting videos! So sad.
My ex wife and I saw Aerosmith on their Pump tour in the then called Arco arena in Sacramento. Skid Row opened the show. I found out that later on during the tour Aerosmith kicked them off and replaced them with Joan Jett and the Blackhearts. Damn, wished it was before we saw them. Skid Row sucked.
I saw Joan Jett and the Blackhearts in A little night club in New London Connecticut New Year’s Eve 1981! She put on a great show and in a small venue, well.. let’s just say, she rocked that joint severely !...
Thing is without all that rejection we might not have gotten all this great music. Some people, and I think Joan Jett is in this category, just feed off it. Don't tell them no you can't, because they will just have to go out and prove you wrong. So, in a way, I want to thank all those who rejected her. We got a lot of great tunes out of it. lol
Unbelievable that no record label wanted her as she was emerging with the Blackhearts in the 80s. Screw those labels. Just think of all of the GARBAGE NOISE that's been released in the past two decades. Thank you Kenny Laguna!
I've seen Joan in concert 3 times and every time I would be in the front row center stage. As I've grown older and have been looking like Jerry Garcia for awhile now, I got an acknowledgement from Joan at her last concert at the Surf Ballroom and Museum in Clear Lake, Iowa last year (2021).. It's great that she noticed me!
I loved punk rock scene of the 80''s. I thought Joan Jett was Tha Bomb! I wore my hair like her black shag hair cut, with the black eyliner, and black t-shirts and Levis. She was beautiful and tough, and a wicked guitar player and singer. She was one of the first women rockers to be on MTV, back in 1983.
BTW I took a lot of crap from my friends back in the day for being a fan of the Runaways. I attended a Bowie concert in Denver not to see him but because the Runaways were opening. I faked my way into the front row center where we found two empty seats. Danced our asses off to the Runaways. The seat owners showed up for Bowie and we went to our nosebleed seats and talked about how great the Runaways were through the whole boring Bowie set.
I'm 44 and a die herd fan of Joan Jett she's absolutely perfect and brilliant 🇺🇸🇮🇱🇬🇧🇸🇭🇭🇲🏴🇿🇦🇻🇺🇦🇩🇯🇲🇮🇪🇵🇷🕎✡️♾️💟🇵🇷🙏🕊️♾️✡️💕🎇 girl power all the time my babies🇬🇧 now 45
My first school dance was in 6th grade and my first song I danced to was i love rock n roll thanks Joan Jett and the black hearts I will always remember that
She is a true rocker, one of a kind, musically passionately, very special kind of talent ❤😮yes I saw her live, and at that show she performed the Nazareth song ‘love hurts’ and it was awesome 😎
Probably wouldn't have seen this if I hadn't watched Eric Ambel chat with Otis Gibbs. Always turned her music up on the radio, but never bought an album. However, I do have Ch-ch, ch-ch, ch-ch, ch-ch Cherry Bomb! in my play list. ed* Great video.
Good Presentation. I collect Music most on CD some videos on DVD or Blue ray. The Runaways and Joan Jett and Blackhearts are as complete as I have been able to find copies. The same for Hank Williams, The MonaLisa Twins, Laura Branigan, Twisted Sister, Cheap Trick, The Go-Go's and The Seekers plus over a dozen more groups and single performers. Joan Jett and the Blackhearts is one of very few Performers I have seen live along with the Chicago symphony orchestra and chorus. My Age is 70.
Pat Smear Later went on to be a touring member of Nirvana and then moved onto the Foo Fighters. And he played with Joan Jett at the rock ‘n’ roll Hall of Fame ceremonies. I’m surprised you didn’t mention that
I remember reading (Creem or Circus mag) that Joanie played pro women's softball in the brief time between the Runaways breakup and starting her solo career. She actually considered making pro sports her thing, due to the major label rejection the Blackhearts got. And about that - it's long been rumored the Runaways acrimonious split with their manager / svengali Kim Fowley was the principal reason no label wanted anything to do with any of the girls after the band's breakup. Lita had major difficulties getting a solo career up and running. Cherie struggled with substance abuse and even tried acting for a few years without much success. Jackie Fox and Vicky Blue both left the music industry altogether and went back to school. Sandy played in various local bar bands and ended up working in a veterinary hospital I think.
Hmmmm, not sure where you got any of that, Joan never played woman's pro ball nor considered pro sports as a career. She was a big fan of the Cleveland Indians however. The principal reason labels were resistant to signing Joan or Lita had nothing to do with Kim Fowley and more to do with The Runaways inability to chart in any major market beyond Japan. Cherie's first acting gig was as one the leads in a major studio motion picture (Foxes 1980) and worked in both film and TV before moving onto marriage (Robert Hays / Airplane) and motherhood...
@@DonMacGillivray Actually, the OP is correct- Joan had always fantasized about a pro sports career. In fact, in an early-1980 or so interview, Joan said that if the Blackhearts didn't work out, she'd like to try out for her fave baseball team, the Baltimore Orioles. She may have said that half-jokingly, but she has always wished she was a baseball player too, in addition to what she dowa. She even went to Fantasy Camp to learn from the pros in 1991 or so. Not sure where you got that she liked the Cleavland Indians- though she loves all baseball, so I'm sure she's fine with them, but they are not her fave team.
@@DonMacGillivray - I do wonder what article the OP is talking about mentioning Joan playing on a team in between bands though. OP might be mixing things up a little bit there. Would be interesting to know for sure what piece they're referring to. I do know she was part of the celebrity softball team for a while though- at least from around 1991. 🙂
@@marksauce2383 It's always somebody's opinion. But my opinion is based on being a guitar player for over 40 years. The Runaways were a basic punk rock band. A gimmick more than anything else. No more and no less. Fanny had some real honest to goodness talent in the band. People like David Bowie recognized it.
Seemed like a nice girl. About 10-15 years , one afternoon Joan Jett and Pat Benatar sat down next to me at a bar in a Casino, they were playing at that night. They were "incognito" , so to speak, dress in regular clothes, no stage make-up. Just a couple girls about 50. I talked to them for about 15 minutes, never said anything about who they were, and they never let on. But I had to so see some family, so I couldn't stay and talk. As I left I said ," Y'all have a good show tonight" LOL . I really wanted to stay and hang out, but I just couldn't. Nice girls
Unless Joan was wearing a Dolly Parton wig and a big ol' hat or something, she wasn't incognito, cause she does that all the time- wears regular clothes and no makeup. It's not unusual for her. Not sure about Pat though. I'm surprised they were both there together- are you sure it was them- like did you see Joan's tattoos? If yes, what did y'all talk about? Did either of them act weird after you said "Have a great show tonight!"?
I went to Triumph when I was 15 cuz I heard they'd have a cool light show. Then before they came in Joan Jett rocked the roof off the 17000 seater. Wow I was standing on my seat crushing on her. Some, boiled cuz her band had short hair and wore black. I didn't get that cuz my mom took me to Buffalo Philharmonic when I was 5. I judge artists on their MUSIC period. I was into Sabbath, Alice and Kiss so yeah I did like a fun show too. Anyway... Joan's attitude was NO reaction. I'm doing my thing. ALWAYS. She IS rocknroll.
I saw Joan Jett in concert a couple years ago (opening for The Who) and she played I Love Rock n Roll and got to a part where the audience was supposed to sing, but no one sang along and it was kinda cringe ngl
In 1992 I was setting up for a show one afternoon at Spinnakers night Club in Panama City Beach Florida, right next to Club LeVela. A girl with wet looking, disheveled hair and looking really high came up to me and started trying to chat me up, but I wasn't really interested. She just didn't look all that good. Found out later it was Joan Jett. I have the dubious, unfortunate distinction of probably being the only dude to ever turn down a chance to get it on bang a gong with a Rock and roll legend. True story.
Wow, you must have met her after a show, and maybe she just showered, or maybe she was sweaty- depending on what he was wearing, if you can recall that. And what was her flirting style like? When you say she chatted you up, what was her approach, and what did she say, do you remember?
@@storybellz It was before the show. She really wasn't saying much but from her demeanor it was clear she was wanting to get it on. Don't remember what she was wearing but she looked super high. Damn.
@@LogCap4Jobs - Well, you are one of the relatively few lucky guys who can say Joan came on to them! It's well-known in her circle that she prefers women, but like I always say, women are for relationships, but guys are for a night- at least if your name was Joan Jett back in the day haha. Do you remember what year that was? EDIT: I see now, you said 1992. Yeah, that makes sense- she was pretty open back then, whereas she's far more reserved these days, and exclusively into women, whereas back then, she'd go for a man for fun once in a while.
I'm disappointed that you neglected to mention her appearance in an episode of Highlander: The Series(the first episode that was filmed). I mean, come on! Joan sword fighting!👍
Oh Joan , I never knew how much I was attracted to women until I seen you. Being a straight female with a huge disrespect for men, I decided to become celibate, and I have been for 16 years. But I would love you until the end of my days 💋🖤
I completely understand her struggle with "Women in Rock and Roll". It's something to acknowledge and appreciate. That being said, If she had SUCKED, she would have proved them Right. She did NOT. She was/is great. She is a Rockin' Rocker. "Female Rocker" implies she is something different. A different Standard. Good is good, period! The Added Struggle, is Note Worthy. But while it was happening, the Whole Idea was, "It shouldn't be happening! Who gets a Rats Ass if I sit or stand when I pee?" There is a Parable about, "If the door is blocked, use a Window." Joan took it to and completely different level. She just blusted through the entire wall! ..... Do you know what that is called?......... Rock and Roll! Again, Joan Jett is a Rocker, NO Gender Identifier needed! Her Best selling song rates 3rd on my list of Rock songs, "I love Rock and Roll" Second is: ACDC's Thunderstruck First on my list: is Joan Jett, "I hate myself for Loving you." (I think was the video. Besides being a great musicians, she is a Stunningly Beautiful Woman with Gorgeous Eyes!)
Numbuh 1.Joans Permanently There!Just Saying!t doesn't Matter cause if your a Chick and can Rock It,Always Soo Cool!Rock on Joan and Every Lady/ Girl That Rocks a Guitar,no Matter What!Jcsx
