Thought I would never hear the "magic" again, after the Beatles breakup. How wrong I was when "Free As A Bird" video was played on Anthology. Still love it.
@@noahv9024 I think the REAL paul simply died two or three times. That's why theres early beatles paul, late beatles paul, wings paul, and flaming pie era paul! Maybe one EXTRA paul specifically responsible for "temporary secretary ".
When the Beatles released Free as a Bird mid 90s i was thrilled that i finally got to celebrate a Beatles song release with the world at the same time.
Thank you Jeff Lynne (ELO) for making this reunion possible and for your fabulous contribution in producing the last 2 songs ever by the Beatles. Also thank you for producing and co-writing for the last 3 Beatles individually on their solo albums and the same for so many great Legends including the Traveling Wilburys.
Thank you. I am 74 years old. Been a Beatle fan since 1964. Fifty years in and out of radio. I must have played large numbers of Beatles records. What a life it has been. Thank you for your program.
Everytime I see where Paul hugs George, it gets me. So glad they did this. Also years ago I got an impromptu chance to talk to John Lennon. Just as he was and so funny lighthearted. Never will forget it.
I'll never forget when the anthology aired, i was hanging with friends and when "Free As A Bird" came on i lost it, yeah, every Beatles fan worth their weight had heard the demos, but hearing those harmonies again...just thinking about it now i get goosebumps!
This song wells up so much emotion in me and makes me feel like crying but also being so happy that it exists. I loved it the second it came out and was blown away by the video. I’m still discovering new Beatles references in the video today. Makes me feel so nostalgic and...free as a bird. Thank you Beatles for making my world a happy and better place
My favorite Beatles Song because of the following: 1. Paul, George and Ringo contributed in completing this unfinished Lennon song 2. Paul and George gets to sing their parts in the two Middle bits 3. George's Slide guitar on this song.
So, as I was saying in the previous upload...lol I remember my husband bringing home Anthology when it was released. We put it in the stereo and those first few notes of Free As a Bird started playing. I remember my breath catching in my throat and saying “It really is them...” It is interesting to hear what all they did to get that old sound back. They were definitely successful at it. Thank you for the upload (and re-upload).
They have to be considered the best. Who else could not only resurect the song of their deceased leader but actually sing WITH him ... His actual performance. It gave meaning to the phrase "gee, I wonder what they would have sounded like had they ...".
I grew up with the Beatles and remember as each new song would come out. My son became a die hard Beatles fan, and I used to tell him, "You should have been there when we first heard them", and then came the Free As A Bird release. We watched it together on television as they counted down to the first Beatles song in decades. It was incredible and my son got to experience it not just once, but twice when Real Love followed. Now he knows the feeling.
Another interesting fact is that Jeff Lynn's longtime drummer Bev Bevins played with Denny Laine and Bill Shepherd (Wings) in the early '60 band The Diplomats. This is Jeff's Production Masterpiece.
All 3 remaining Beatles were so pleased to work with the great Jeff Lynne who produced and played on Free As A Bird and Real Love. Free as a Bird charted at no.2 and Real Love at no.4. Some facts about Jeff Lynne (ELO)...First, he is a very humble man, simply because this Music Genius is not interested in fame, the limelight, and money, he just loves to create great music. Jeff Lynne is one of the most versatile musicians ever, this is why he is considered by his peers to be among the greatest. He didn't stick to one style of music because, after decades, it gets boring. Jeff has done progressive Rock, Symphonic Rock - Pop, New wave, and Disco. Everything he does turns to gold. He even flirted with Country music. From 1972 to 1986 (During 14 years) Jeff Lynne's Electric Light Orchestra has had more top 40 hits than any other group in the world....51 years later they still play in sold-out Arenas, festivals and Stadiums. During Jeff Lynne's ELO 2019 Tour, many reviews agreed in saying they are the best live Classic Rock Band in the world still touring and Jeff Lynne is a Music Genius( From Forbes Magazine and the Washington Post). ELO is in the Rock Hall of Fame. Lynne is on the Hollywood Walk Of Fame and Birmingham Walk OF Fame. Jeff Lynne’s ELO won the Best Classic Rock Band plus Lynne won the best Songwriter award ( ASCAP ) in 2019 for his fantastic contribution over the years. In October of 2020, Jeff Lynne has been made an officer of The Order Of The British Empire for his extraordinary contribution to music. He previously has received three Ivor Novello Awards, which celebrate songwriters and composers, including the award for outstanding services to British music. He created the best Super Group of all time with his best friend George Harrison, The Traveling Wilburys. The Legends in the Music Industry call Jeff Lynne the best overall Musician ever and a Producer Extraordinaire. Jeff Lynne has written and produced many hit songs for music legends like George Harrison, Roy Orbison, Tom Petty, Joe Walsh, Brian Wilson, Paul McCartney, Ringo Starr, Bryan Adams, Aerosmith, Del Shannon, the Everly Brothers, The Beatles, and so many others...

Something crazy about the release of Free as a Bird was that it was released the same year and month that Queen released their album Made in Heaven. Oddly enough, Queen was doing almost the same thing that the Beatles were doing. Taking old demos and songs made by lost bandmates and imagining what they would have done with it.
I wept a little bit when I first saw the video. I was too young to experience the Beatles when they were together, so to hear a NEW Beatles song was overwhelming and wonderful.
I am so stoked I found this channel. your genuine passion and appreciation translates so well into your delivery. I can definitely see you’ve had experience in front of a camera! The other amazing facet of your channel is how often you personalize things, yet at the same time keep me completely involved and on board. I always learn something with your content, and always leave a video feeling very grateful, and uplifted! Thank you!
Was relatively young when I first heard the song, and just assumed it was a true Beatles tune. An outtake that I’d somehow missed. Sounds so good. I know you could never replace John and George, and maybe this is sacrilege, but I’d love to hear Paul and Ringo with Jeff Lynne and Todd Rundgren performing Beatle’s songs live. Could call themselves The Bronze Beetles 😅
I really appreciate the uplifting manner in the way you recorded this explanation. Your smile and joy as you recall these events is infectious and bring thoughtfulness to this story.
Thank you for the video. In the beginning, Paul didn’t want Jeff to produce the project, because he was suggested by George and was George’s friend. There is a very interesting interview of Jeff about that... I think it’s great that George was able to lead the project too in this stage of their lives...
Super song free as a bird and real love two great Beatles tracks two of the greatest Beatles songs of all time!! Beautiful songs John would very proud the Beatles live on forever peace and love wonderful magnificent Beatles up the irons maiden manic and a very nice video as well just timeless classic,🇬🇧🇬🇧💛💛⭐⭐✨✨🎸🎸❤️❤️🤟🇱🇷🇱🇷🇬🇧💛💛
How awesome was it when this, and Real Love came out?? Dad was still with us then, we had The Anthology DVDs and cd's! Awesome that a couple of Beatles songs were charting in my younger life! I'm over 40 now, lol!
When I first heard it, I assumed the 'whatever happened to..' part was Paul's creation. I was surprised to find out John had it pretty much down when I heard the demo.
Thank you, once again, my brother. May I contribute with another detail that witness the magic? When they met in George House, out of nowhere, came a bird that never left their side. It was a presence all of of them felt was somehow representing John. At least, it was an occurrence aligned with the song itself... ❤️
I remember the excitement 25 years ago when ABC debuted the 'Free As A Bird' video during the Anthology series. There was a countdown. I was surprised when I learned the source of this song was a home-recorded cassette demo tape. I assumed there had to be an unreleased song by John of professional studio quality the other three Beatles could have found suitable to use, but apparently not. However, I love the song and video.
This is a great recent creation that gives us a stripped-down, all-Beatles version of Grow Old With Me: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-fGZEQv2wCgQ.html
This video means so much to me, John is and forever no.1 with me , I liked him the first time I saw him, his music is so awesome, I will join the cavern club . Beatles are the Best band in the world thank you, Steve
I love your channel and very much enjoy your content. Though I have heard the thing about George Martin not doing it due to his hearing problems was only the line that was fed to us. I'm pretty sure Martin himself later refuted this and in an interview with Rockcellar Magazine in 2013 basically said the idea of reuniting to finish off John's old recordings didn't appeal to him, he said that if they had asked him he might have agreed to do it, but stated he never was. Possibly due to the fact that he'd previously expressed to them that he wasn't sure if it was a good idea. In the interview he also talked about how he would have approached the songs if he had produced them. His hearing had started to go down hill by then, but it didn't stop him mixing all 3 anthology soundtracks and I don't believe it would have stopped him helping Paul, George and Ringo in the studio with arrangements and some direction, after all he helped Paul out on a few tracks on Flaming Pie with some orchestral arrangements and like you mentioned over 10 years later he did an amazing string arrangement on While My Guitar Gently Weeps for the LOVE album, no reason he couldn't have done the same and helped out with Real Love and Free as a Bird, even if it was with the help of Jeff Lynne. I believe the real reason he wasn't involved was simply because he wasn't fond of the idea.
I agree: his hearing was fine to mix all Anthology CD’s and did an excellent job too. It’s also been suggested that George Harrison was well aware that ego’s could rear their heads in the studio and one of the conditions he placed was to have someone more neutral (Obviously, Paul having a close working relationship with George Martin could have led to favouritism) so they decided upon Jeff Lynne. Equally, Paul may have had the same misgivings about Jeff after he and George H had worked previously on Cloud 9 and The Wilburys. As Jeff said, he soon put him at ease and they spent their first meeting with G, P and R chatting about the old days and Jeff completely fan-boying out on the whole experience!!
FREE AS A BIRD and REAL LOVE really hit home for me when I first heard them (upon release) and now. I'm a huge Jeff Lynne fan. So much so I have a conspiracy theory I'd at least like to throw out there. It is: this may be a partial hoax. It was said that John blessed ELO as the 'sons of the Beatles'. I've never quite gotten that vibe but that's not my point. John's comment means that he might have been willing to work with Jeff Lynne someday. This is important because when John Lennon was murdered ELO was absolutely on fire. DON'T BRING ME DOWN had just happened and a ton of hits beforehand. So it's not unreasonable to wonder if John wanted Jeff to produce either a song or two for him or an album. If John wanted to rake some money in -- even more than normal money -- sign Jeff Lynne as producer. I say this because if you're the student of Jeff that I am these two songs -- FREE AS A BIRD and REAL LOVE -- have an absolute stench of co-written by Jeff Lynne. Or written entirely by Jeff to sound like John. No, you scoff? Jeff Lynne has go to lyrics. If you want a song written about 'rain' -- go to Jeff Lynne. He can't shut up about rain or waterfalls. Similarly, he loves FLYING. So much so Tom Petty get two helpings: LEARNING TO FLY and FREE FALLIN'. So FREE AS A BIRD is out of the Lynne lexicon, not John. John is more poetic. Jeff would never have a song titles like BEAUTIFUL BOY (DARLING BOY). I'm pretty sure Jeff has never had a song title that includes parentheses like that. Jeff wouldn't go with (JUST LIKE) STARTING OVER as a song title. REAL LOVE? That's pure Jeff. Blunt, simple. (John did this a lot too, as in IMAGINE.) What I'm getting at is that there is reason to believe John and Jeff had already spoken about these songs. That they were creating them together. I mean how strange is it that John just happened to have these very strong sounds sitting around -- at the same time that -- ELO was on fire? Kinda odd. There are some that might say these two songs were entirely faked. That they were Jeff Lynne songs aand someone pretended to be John in the recordings, hence why they needed to be so crappy sounding. So that you couldn't make out it wasn't John. You might scoff at that but what do you think ABC was willing to pay the Beatles for two 'new' songs? Oh, and if we were to go Tin Foil hat a little more, maybe Jeff Lynne wanted to reunite the Beatles in a band where they didn't have to be 'be' Beatles. They could just be, you know, Traveling Wilburys? Sounds looney, I know, but than it was kinda weird that Jeff then worked with George and Paul and a little Ringo afterwards. Just musing out loud, mind you...
I remember I was 18 when Free As A Bird came out and I was already a huge Beatles fan thanks to my dad. How cool to get to feel the excitement of brand new stuff...this is still one of my favorite songs.
I grew up in Merseyside, My mother was a member of the ACTUAL Cavern Club, and we lived next door to Paul’s aunt, I often talked to him through our connected back garden. I love the Beetles, always have, always will. But sorry mate, the best decision of MY life was marrying my wife 26 years ago! Great channel!
I was born in late 70s and became a fan of Beatles in 80s while already realized Beatles will never reunion again without John....until 1994 when I heard the live-broadcast of Free As A Bird on TV...I was fxxking blow up in tears
I'm grateful to Yoko for giving Paul the tapes. But it feels like she always wants to play it both ways. Auctioning off John's stuff, barring Cyn from his funeral, etc. but saying all these wholesome things about the band
Thank you so much for making this video. Free as a bird and Real love hold a very special place in my heart as they are the only new Beatles songs I got to experience in my lifetime. I love them so much that I made my own versions in GarageBand. Growing up in the 80s, I discovered them through my mom’s record collection. From there, I’ve been a life long fan. I’m curious, do you have any information on the alternate mixes / versions of free as a bird and real love that were released on the Beatles 1 blu Ray? I’m very curious to know if Jeff Lynne has anything to do with those as well. Perhaps a follow up video? Looking toward to the Real love video. Keep up the great work!
am still recovering from you, in an anodyne manner, dancing behind that sofa as 'patrick bateman' from the last video!! i was like, 'did i just see this?? . . . ' haha!
I feel like if musicans like John, Kurt (or Michael Jackson?) would have mastered music. I mean "You know you're rights" sound great and free as a bird as well... Maybe A.I. can try.
People forget there were 3 Threatles songs on Abbey Road. But I digress - FAAB is awesome, but I can't help but wish the drums sounded more Beatle-esque. Also, I can only imagine what they could have done to the cassette demo with today's technology - the piano and vocal could have been separated and cleaned up even better.
I really appreciate the research you have done to tell us this valuable story in the history of the Beatles. Thanks for this wonderfully detailed interpretation that you have given us. Plus all the best for your personal endevours in life.
Joe Pytka, who directed the music video and a few for Michael Jackson during the late ‘80s, also directed _Space Jam._ Many ‘90s kids are forever indebted to him. ^_^
I truly agree with the sentiment that without John, any music the other 3 of them wrote and put out as The Beatles just wouldn’t be The Beatles. Even if John WAS around and just contributed one or two different chords to a song or a different strumming pattern, that would be The Beatles. Without him, it’s pointless, and I’m kinda happy they didn’t make any music without him.
I disagree, the Beatles wanted to hype up the anthology project. There is no better way to excite Beatles fans all over the world, 2 new Beatles songs, which one sounds like it came from revolver and the other one from the white album, would be just perfect. This was the one perfect moment, where John had already left a part of the song, and Paul saw himself as sort of “I will do it for John, he trusts me on this” . In the end, the anthology was one of the greatest documentaries ever, it was a huge undertaking and absolutely a massive success.
Sir, please can you do episode on "Within You and Without You"? I am from India and I really appreciate the Indian influence in this song (and many others). I am big fan of this channel. Well done, bhai! ✌🕊
I genuinely did not know that real love and free as a bird were not well I don't want to call it "not Beatles" but because I don't have a better word for it I didn't know they were not Beatles songs untill I checked what album they were on
George Martin had the kind of integrity that Yoko Ono didn't. Jeff Lynne did a great job in making the Beatles sound like ELO, or maybe they would have anyway. The video is simply brilliant.
Lynne puts that ELO'ish sound on everything he touches. I personally never liked his 'produced' sound, but to each his own. It's a sure bet that had George Martin been able to do it, the results would have been magical.
Jeff Lynne's Electric Light Orchestra from The Rock And Roll Hall Of Fame site: "Picking up where the Beatles left off, ELO expanded the concept of great melodies, epic song structures and grand orchestrations. ELO added an exciting mix of elements into rock and roll, including disco rhythms and electronic studio wizardry. Imagine a marriage of tuneful, rocking pop songs with instruments from the symphonic realm, and you’ve got the blueprint for what made ELO one of the most popular groups of the 1970s and beyond. Jeff Lynne, ELO’s vocalist, guitarist, songwriter, co-founder, and frontman, conceived of a rarefied musical sphere in which cellos coexisted with guitars, and where classically tinged progressive rock intersected with hook-filled, radio-friendly pop. The result: ELO’s boundary-breaking approach to rock that resonated with a global audience, both as a pop singles act and as album-oriented rockers with deep-track appeal".
