This episode covers the wake of Alexander III's death and Scotland's search for an heir. This led to Edward I of England's intervention and after his dominance was rejected by the Scottish, Edward sought to conquer instead. William Wallace and later King Robert the Bruce were the leaders of the Scottish resistance which eventually saw England defeated and Scotland remain independent.
Recommended books:
A. Barrell, Medieval Scotland (2000). A great overview of the period but its scope is much broader than this episode.
G. Barrow, Kingship and Unity: Scotland, 1100-1306 (2003). Much greater focus than the above.
M. Morris, A Great and Terrible King: Edward I and the forging of Britain (2008). For an overview of England and its aims during the Scottish Wars of Independence.
Ten Minute English and British History is a series of short, ten minute animated narrative documentaries that are designed as revision refreshers or simple introductions to a topic. Please note that these are not meant to be comprehensive and there's a lot of stuff I couldn't fit into the episodes that I would have liked to. Thank you for watching, though, it's always appreciated.

Yeah im suprised they did. England is arguing with like 2 or 3 small countries about returning culturally relevant shit that was taken to a british musueum from colonial times. There argument is basically "were not done looking at it, your welcome to come look whenever. If your visas go through"

Yeah, there was an attempt by Scottish nationalist students to steal it in the 50's from Westminster Abbey that succeeded, but it was eventually returned after a few weeks. Then when it was sent back to Scone in 1996, it was agreed that whilst it was housed there, whenever a new Monarch is crowned at Westminster, it is to be returned to Westminster Abbey for the Coronation.

One important note that was missed is that Robert Bruce (King of Scots) only sided with Edward because of his father, Robert Bruce the competitor, but once he died Bruce broke his oath to England for Scottish independence. He for sure acted on his own political gain to be crowned King but also was very aware of the importance the war had on the Scottish realm. J.W.S Barrow's book on Robert The Bruce and the Community of the Realm of Scotland provides a brilliant source on the Scottish side of the war for any interested in it!

@HistoryMarche
@HistoryMarche 6 лет назад
I'm fully aware of this. Furthermore I always root for the underdog. I found the "You have been Walesed" funny not because Wales is a pushover, but because the joke is ironic. Similarly, France was usually an influential player in Europe, a great power and a superpower for brief spells, but that doesn't prevent jokes which say that "France always loses its' wars", which are based solely on their spectacular and more recent defeat in WW2., not on their history as a whole.

Downsides: A violent and ultimately pointless war that took far too many lives. Upsides: Robert gave my family some moderately prestigious titles, for which we continued to name children after him for centuries. I'm torn on how to feel about this.

Wallace execution was gruesome! It wasn't the first time someone was hanged, drawned and quartered, but it was still a brutal way to die. Hugh Dispenser the Younger was executed in this fashion while the Queen Isabella wife of Edward II was eating and enjoying the execution. Brutal times!

Danny Miller you couldn’t be further from the truth. Not only was he invited to England, but he stated that gaining the English crown was an upgrade and he essentially never set foot in Scotland ever again. The Stuart’s also tried to convert the presbyterian Scots to Anglicanism. Basically like ever Scot who leaves Shitland he never returned and was pleased to leave 😂

Sorry, but you've got your racial distributions a bit wrong. Lowland Scotland was never Celtic, rather its always been Anglo-Saxon in both language and ethnicity. It's unforgivable that people forget that in 1066 England was conquered and the English nobility was replaced with Williams most loyal FRENCH mates, the English were stripped of their lands and Williams descendants went on to do the same to other parts of the British and Irish Isles. If the movies particularly Braveheart portrayed the kings of England in this period with French accents maybe people would start to realise that the English were the oppressed and not the oppressors. But then again that would make the French the bad guys and that's not allowed to happen, gotta feed that anti English sentiment in Scotland and the rest of the world. The French stitched both the English and the Scots up because it was the squabbles of a French Speaking King of England and the King of France that set Scotland and England at loggerheads. If people needed evidence of the Plantagenets true nationality look at the hundred years war. It was a French civil war that the French speaking kings of England waged in France for control of their ancestral lands but also to try and get the French crown they had a claim to and of a country they had more in common with.

You are wrong with the statement that Scottish kings had to recognize English superiority over them and they had to get approval from the English Kings for appointment of heirs. English control over Scotland since 1066 had been very limited, and Scottish Kings only payed homage to the English Kings for lands they held in England. Also there was a prevalent Scottish identity before that of the Scottish wars of Independence. Just a few of the number of historical claims and mistakes I saw in this video.
@Valencetheshireman927

Actually I doubt you did, there is no historical evidence suggesting that was the case from Historical records from both England and Scotland. The only evidence we have on the stated fact was Constatine the 1st of Alba paying Homage to Athelstan after his defeat. But he soon took arms up against him. And that was before the formation of both Kingdoms and Scotland and England other than that there is no other evidence to suggest Scotland was under English control and the Scottish crown had to ask English permission to appoint heirs. That's a fallacy.
