I have a long way to go on my personal minimalism journey, but this video made me stop and smile contentedly at the progress I have made thus far. I don’t have a TV, I cook from home 90% of the time, and I am so much more thoughtful about every single purchase I make. I’ve also lost 50 lbs, reversed medical diagnoses, and cultivated deeper relationships with my close friends and family. I can truly say I am the most content I have ever been.
That's awesome! I feel the same way. I've been on our journey myself and my grown kids. They're not really into it .But I loved doing it. Still working on it .
@@sandysmom100 Keep on keeping on!! I’m the grown kid in my situation, and my dad is definitely starting to see the benefits of how I live. Just gotta get my mom on board!!
I was raised within a minimalist family back in the 70's so I consider it to be normal but I'd have to say the biggest advantage of being a minimalist besides how much money you save is how much less house work you have to do, it's so much quicker and easier to keep my home clean because I don't have a lot of furniture and useless stuff in it. Thank you again for another insightful and inspiring video.
ME too born in 66 two brothers after me. No one even had much money then .My Parents gave us lifelong experiences, like the arts and the sciences , nature and all of that! Some of my friends family bought their love. SO glad I didn't grow up that way.
@@urbanvision4365 A lot of parents can't or won't spend much time with their children,so they buy them things they "want" to make themselves feel better about many things like working to buy more things!! Yes,things are more expensive now,but Time and Attention are More Expensive, and we cannot buy that back.
Last summer I found your channel and then the Minimal Mom. Your faith and guidance have been transformational for me. My home is now highly simplified, I have more time for family and friends, stopped drinking!!!, lost pounds back to my college wt, and healthier and more content than I’ve been in a long time. And it all started with decluttering my stuff…
Thank you for sharing your journey! It is so meaningful to me! I am 77ish and wish I had discovered minimalism earlier in life, but thankful that I have discovered it🙏🏼❤️
I’m 66, and I agree! You’re also doing your loved ones a huge service by having a minimalist lifestyle. My dad was a packrat/hoarder (who, ironically loved watching “Hoarders”); I took care of him for his last thirteen years. After he died, it took such a toll on me cleaning out his house (like almost twelve tons of crap just in dumpsters!) that I ended up in therapy to get over my anger and resentment. Swedish Death cleaning rocks!
Today I returned to the hospital where I retired from 14 months ago. I am a primary care giver fir my elderly mom and she needed care. As I brought her from place to place in different areas where she had testing done, I saw many previous coworkers who did not know that I had retired. The conversation turned to be primarily about money. At the end I wrote down your name and the title of your latest book. I spoke breifly about how becoming a minimalist has changed my perspectives on many things. More importantly I was able to convey how YOU had opened the eyes of my heart to live life differently, on purpose and with intentionality. Thank you for that😊. Not sure if she will look you up but I am so grateful that I did.
What if your neighbor never had the conversation with you? I guess timing is crucial in some aspects of life, thank you Joshua, you have such a great way to present minimalism.
Thank you Joshua!..minimalism AND fasting are so clearly taught in scripture yet so often overlooked. Dr Berg and your channel have helped me enjoy a "new" freedom and health I NEVER experienced before @55
I would also say as someone with chronic illnesses and disabilities, minimalism has given me SO MUCH sense of calm, joy, and intentionality living in a body that ebbs and flows. I had to laugh that when I tackled a minimalist amount of earrings a few weeks ago, I didn't have a small home for them... turns out they fit neatly in one of my 7 day pill containers! haha No more mega jewelry boxes or big hangers filled with stuff I don't wear. :-)
So true on all accounts for me too! So thankful finding minimalism for me. My sister was a minimalist for years before it was talked about on the computer. I remember when I started decluttering I told her I would not declutter in my sewing room…well that was back in June 2019 and I have done some decluttering there…but I have used and cut back my spending on fabrics if I have something that will work! A pastor friend who I have known for over 30 years was over for a visit this past week and he gave me a huge compliment saying how nice my home felt and looked. After feeling I was always messy…finding out it was because I had tooooo much stuff has made a huge difference. Thanks Joshua for all you share!
It really is amazing how all these things intertwine with each other. We first set out on a journey (lead by God) to become debt free. About the time we accomplished that, as Covid was hitting the world, we felt lead to get our health under control and I've lost over 100lb! Then last year, while stressed over the mess of my home, I ran across videos by the Minimal Mom and yourself. Bam! Freedom! God is faithful to lead us to break through if we will but listen and obey. Thank you!
I appreciate your organized thoughts and content, and have been following you for quite awhile. You can recognize content creators who are followers of Christ and have been in the Word...their words have much depth, wisdom, purpose. As a fellow believer, I appreciate you acknowledging your faith, and I know God honors us when we reflect Him. Also, I appreciate how you keep your video length "minimal" and to the point, as I try to keep my social media to a "minimal" use of my time to focus on what is really important in my life too. 😉 Blessings to your home! 😊
When I talk about being a minimalist or how I live my life people say I’m not emotional or hold on to memories in my home. I explained how being minimal has change my life for the better in all the ways you have explained. My husband and I are celebrating our 29th wedding anniversary on Sunday and life is wonderful!!
I just purged 85/90% of my pictures. In process of getting rid of all but the most cherished sentimental items. Which is actually very few. It’s not lacking emotion, its just that it is “stuff” that isn’t serving me anymore. Im ready to pass it on while keeping my memories in my head rather than them cluttering up my home.
Yes, I’ve had the comment ‘you haven’t got a sentimental bone in your body’ sooo many times! No, I just haven’t got 60+ years of STUFF any more 😊 I have memories and photos that cherish, and I have time to spend with friends and family to make more 😊
I agree! I'm early in my minimalism journey, but I have already experienced many of these benefits & find that I am truly enjoying a more peaceful & simple life.
Wow!. I love your work and this video! I agree with you 100%. So why do I have such a hard time getting rid of my "stuff"?? I have a journey!!@ Thank you. And God Bless!!
You can do it. Don't think too much. Just dump the stuff and vow not to be a sucker to advertising and discontentment. You won't miss a thing. You will be free!
I still have a lot to do on my minimalism journey, but I already see the benefits. It’s mentally, emotionally and physically easier to live without the stuff I don’t need. The only hard thing right now with this new mindset is the fact, that I gave away just about half the things I intend to. I’m sorting through a lot of things and packing the stuff I don’t want to keep and will (ethically) dispose of them once I’m done, but in a meanwhile I have to store them in my small apartment and see them everyday. It’s a good motivation to keep going tho. And totally worth it. Cooking is easier without so much clutter. And laundry! That’s so much better! And I don’t feel guilty for not wearing all the clothes I had in my closet. I also have more physical space and can easily do some excercise at home, like yoga. I didn’t find any downside till now, only benefits. :)
This is a great way to look at the benefits of minimalism. I have found that having more time is the most obvious benefit. Right now, I have the time to improve my credentials and work productivity as well as having more time for family and friends. It has been an unbelievably positive by-product of minimizing the stuff in my house. Many thanks for another great video!
Wow powerful message, thank you. I now have your book on audio and a paper copy that I can mark up as I listen and read. I love your newest book, Things that Matter. I also love that you are helping Orphans with your income. I have been decluttering for a few years now and always find more to get rid of. Some I give to family members if they need it, sell, give to thrift store or garbage if no good. My problem areas are books ( I have gotten rid of many though), albums and pictures and my craft room full of stuff. My next declutter is my craft room so wish me luck. Other areas of my home are so much easier to clean with less furniture and stuff. My husband jokes that he will be sitting on the floor someday :) Thanks again
You will always have the memories. The stuff is nothing. You don't need evidence that you lived. Stay in the present and you will be free! You can do it. Don't waste another moment.
I don’t know what craft supplies you have but it has helped me (as a quilter with more fabric than she can use in a lifetime)to give to my quilt guild because we make quilts for local charities. I also give to new quilters starting out as it is an expensive hobby. Knowing that your excess craft items are being using to help others makes it easier to let go. See if there is a group in your area you can donate to. I also struggle with books but donating to our local Friends of the Library group for their book sales helped me let things go. You can take pictures of the books and if you want them in the future, you can request them from the library. Our crafting supplies and books are identify clutter and can be the hardest to let go of. I work on decluttering 5% at a time which makes it easier. Good luck!
Love your videos! I get great inspiration from them. I would love for you to have the person that introduced you to minimalism and how she became a minimalist. Just a suggestion. Keep up the good work! MOJ
Awesome video. I’m a work in progress and my main problem is paper clutter. I go great and then I look at my mounds of paper on it. I swear it multiples faster than rabbits. Lol
I lost my hard disc two weeks ago...since then I started watching your videos. I can not stop decluttering. The house ist a complete mess at the Moment nur I get rid of more and more stuff each day. I Hope i will get
My husband has in the last 3 days invited people over on the spur of the moment. I am not a huge fan of that, I like to plan for things, but our house is minimal and presentable so it's not a big deal. We have 2 areas that are not great, but it's because we renovated a few months ago and a few things have not been finished yet, waiting on stock of materials to arrive 🙄🙄, but once that is done everything will have its place ☺️.
I have heard you tell the story before about talking with your neighbor - I need to know more about this neighbor! Was / Is he a minimalist? Does he know what kind of an impact he had on you? Do you still live next to him? Talk to him? I would love to see an update about your neighbor. PLEASE!
Owning more stuff definitely odds to more money,(even maintaining) stress and work. I just recently spent months working morning till evening going through and giving my stuff away. I don’t know if I ever will be a minimalist, but I for sure came to realize that we own a lot more than we ever need.
Thank you so much for all your video,s, I do enjoy everyone of them. I love minimalism very much, but I still have some work to do in that area. But will get there!
That’s all so awesome! I wonder, do you stay in touch with the neighbor who started you on this path? You should send her flowers and a complimentary book!🌷
I find that I am also accepting fewer engagement such as social events, meetings, and networking functions. I am being more discerning about what I say yes to.
Hey Joshua, It feels amazing to get introduced to minimilism, ive done my bit as much as i can, could you give any advice about dealing with a husband who loves this stuff.
Friend loved sailing. He purchased a sailing boat and spent 90% of his free time maintaining it. When selling after a few years he hired a yacht and found that he had made a mistake by purchasing a yacht and not owning.
I just discovered this minimalism life this year and as I start and change my lifestyle to it along the, I realize a lot of things, ..then realize I wish I discovered it early
You are disciplined, many people are not. . And you have a spouse that agrees with minimalism, saving money, etc. many people have spouses that aren’t on board with their wish to minimalism, saving money, etc. I understand what you are saying. I am just pointing out that without a supportive spouse, sometimes minimalism, saving money, spending less, etc isn’t possible. I am not speaking of my spouse. He would get rid of most of our possessions, except for stuff in his garage. LOL. I am just thinking of some of my acquaintances and how this plan wouldn’t work. As for my home, I have minimized quite a bit of my home. Then due to divorce, my son moved in with us and his two boys are here half the week. With them came their possessions and toys. So, once again, we have a full home with lots of “stuff”. I know it is temporary, so I don’t mind. God bless everyone and their minimalism adventure.
Hi Shannon. I have a video coming out on this in a few weeks, stay tuned. In the meantime, there's an older video on my channel about being a minimalist with kids that has some tips in it. You can watch it here: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-jO53R1yiVBo.html
To get a new toy, they must sell, donate or trash one existing toy. It will make them consider whether they really want a new toy as it will cost them the loss of something they already have. Have less, want less.
When you have too many possessions you spend too much money and have no money for emergencies. Like dentist bills and doctors. Or even trips that you want to take. All because we have been consuming way too much for some kind of a purpose. And that purpose could be filling in emotional need.
It's scary when you change but your partner doesn't. I try to be inspiring by following minimalism, eat clean, limit my wardrobe but I do get frustrated to come home and see other people''s clutter strewn about.
Was does the scriptures say: don't be anxious about you wear or what you eat etc. Look at the birds of heaven and the lillies. Are you not more important? SO don't be anxious. YOUR FATHER will take care of you if you keep doing his will. Please note not exact wording. But the point is we need to focus on more important things that will bring lasting happiness. Things wear out and rust, but our love for God is everlasting. Not incouraging laziness, because a man who is capable of working and does not will not eat. But rather pray and trust in him in hard times will build faith knowing he cares and will not forsake you. Not one item in your house can do that ❤
I would be really curious to hear how your wife, as a woman, is getting along with minimalism. A man with 7 black shirts, okay, but how does she manage as a woman? Would be great to have a video on that topic!
What I don't like is when people come over and visit you and you talk about the things that you just bought or what you own. It's a distraction from getting to know each other. Who wants to talk about your drapes? Who wants to talk about your new car or your new clothing. You don't want to draw attention yourself as if you are a brager. When you have less, it creates an atmosphere where you force yourself to think about the other. Person? Rather than talk about what you have or own or what they have or own. It's so Vain. But rather, if you have to say a garden, you can go outside and give credit to the creator. And to get close 2 one another, you can be a good listener when you have company over. So having less gives you the opportunity to talk more about the important things in life. It gives you a chance to share spiritual upbuilding encouraging words from the bible. Sharing of recipes sharing of garden tips sharing of other things other than look at this new couch. Oh, how much did you pay for it so I can gossip about it. I think you get my drift. It's nothing wrong with having material possessions that you use on a daily basis. And there's nothing wrong with being content because jesus said to be content with what you have. And not to be a bragger. And remember that our heavenly father takes care of us and not to worry not to be over anxious. Jesus never encouraged laziness. But he did encourage working. But not to gain excessive material possessions. There's a difference between being materialistic and getting into debt and focusing on material things. And working to support your family to be content with the more simple things in life so you can have time to get closer Is god and his son jesus.
i do a very minimal diet. only meat. im doing the carnivore diet. its so simple. i dont even travel the middle aisles at the store I just head straight to the meat section lol
@@kate60 lady u have no idea the health problems ive had over the years.. let me give u a backstory of how this all started. back in 2004 i was diagnosed with crohns disease. anyways I tried evertying u can think of. all the diets. including vegan. when the pandemic started it was really slow at work so I started reading more books and doing research on healthy diets. i ran across a man named Weston A Price. he went around the world looking at the healthiest tribes who seemed to have no health problems at all. including perfect teeth. he discovered one thing in common. all of these tribes ate an animal based diet. with very minimal veggies if any at all. so this is how the concept of the carnivore diet began.its how our ancestors ate for millions of years. do u think plants grew during the ice age? no..think about that for a minute.
@@dean4125 I'm sorry that you suffered. In truth, ancestors are mostly veg and grains. Meat was hard to get. Animal based diets are known to cause heart disease, kidney problems and a host of other ills. Perhaps, you are a rare case. I sincerely hope so. Be Well, Sir.
@@kate60 follow the money trail. doctors are trained to push pills. because of profit margins for big pharma. dont be a sucker. we have been taught our whole life. veggies and grains are good for us. but its false. we used to eat meat. why do u think we have an obesity epidemic in this country?
@@dean4125 I agree about the crazy allopathic system. They give you meds and cut you up. There is no discussion about lifestyle. I went whole food plant based 8 years ago. I maintain a great weight. I drink water, exercise reasonably, get good sleep. I feel great. I don't eat meat and don't condemn those who do. We need fiber, vitamins, minerals found in plant food. Factory farming is a disaster. Fast chemical food and processed junk is the cause of illness. It's hard to watch people suffer. Those chemicals along with fat, salt and sugar are addictive...the brain and body gets ruined. Eat your meat. And, have some greens. Make wise choices...we don't have a spare body or life.
This comment is about the logo on my admittedly exotic two-seater (aminimal # of seats) & my SUV (if you'll wait for it) to frame my point: I resonate with what you say about avoiding logos, who'd want to be a "walking billboard", sure I'll wear a swoosh on my shirt, if that company will pay me to advertise for them (or if I get the shirt for free) haha! However, I drive a 911, & that emblem is practically a religion to me, & why does my 4Runner (the SUV I drive to sketchy areas, where I fear my Porsche might be taken) make a statement about me (practicality & Japanese reliability) which it absolutely does?! I'm a walking contradiction (billboard) an aspiring minimalist, who needs a bunch of tools for my proudly Yamaha dirt bike.
We have only a short time to raise our children, and if all they remember is a parent or two working and never being home, how will they bond especially during ghe formative years, and anytime when they need your presence to talk. Work is necessary but to become materialistic. If children go to the world for advice, who knows what could happen.
Thank you so very much for sharing . I needed this video at this very moment as just about to be more ruthless with my decluttering 👍🏻. Yes..check you out 😉 lucky wife but I bet even luckier husband.😀 . best wishes to you and yours .tracey🇬🇧💛🤍
