Directed by Rufus Campbell. Daptone Records co-owners tell the story of how the Daptone House of Soul came about, and what makes Daptone stand out from the rest. www.daptonereco...
they are literally the best label there is!! I'm a little late to the party but they saw and conquered their dream. No matter what if I see a Daptone label I know I'm going to love it!
Sharon saying “this is the house of soul “ made me bust out the hardest cry I’ve had in a while. I watched this mini doc when it first came out and I watched it just now…. It’s so good. 😭♥️♥️♥️
Such a great record label. I love this whole Retro-Soul, Deep Funk Revival that is being produced today. Such a breath of fresh air in a world of stale music. This kind of soul and funk music really heals the mind, body, and soul for me. Keep on making great records guys!
im so thankful that I found this label, i cant imagine what i would be listening too in its place but seek and ye shall find, in my top ten for record labels
You guys know real talent when you hear it. I am so jealous, I wish I worked for you guys and had a job I would love to come to everyday. Keep up the great work and thank you for making my life better.
Daptone is THE best record label out there currently. If it were 1962, I would have said Cameo/Parkway, but now that Daptone is here (and for the last 10 years).............. Thanks Gabe. Having met you at the studio, you are down to earth and a creative genius.
These guys put out great albums, I've bought a little over 1/2 their LPs, some of their 45's and like they say, when I get them in the mail (I order from their online store) I get a feeling that I'm about to play something that's going to be amazing (and seeing my 10 year old son dance his ass off on the first play is something special). Thanks Daptone family, keep putting up SOUL!
Love the story.....love Daptone! The soul/funk equivalent of Factory Records, Postcard etc. See you Sunday Charles, travelling down from Glasgow and so looking forward to the show.
So weird seeing this for the first time after going to Daptone shows since the beginning. That's like hallowed ground to me. Glad I can say I saw some of the earliest shows by Sharon and the Dap Kings, Antibalas, Sugarman 3, Mighty Imperials, The Budos and more!! Coolest label out there without a doubt! And I love that it's here in Brooklyn. I'll always follow what's going on with Daptone!
The world is a more beautiful place for Daptone being a part of it. May we all have the pleasure of celebrating yet another 10 years with them! Daptone stands out from the rest because Soul isn’t what they do - Soul is what they are.
Regardless of what any detractors may say - thank you for making music that takes me all the way back to growing up in the late 70's and hearing heartfelt soul pour out of the radio.
Great musicians, producers, engineers, incredibly talented collective. Thanks for sharing how its done and what it all looks like at the special place where all that beautiful music is made. All the best.
You gotta be kidding me! Daptone's recording artists helped building that recording studio?! You just can't make this up. What an awesome, family-like record label. This as real and amazing as it gets :]
... good morning, friends ( soul sister and soul brothers)!... in my personal oppinion, you all are ' Warriors of Light"!...just keep your 'third eyes' opened'!
Thank you for giving us a tour of the "House of Soul"! I love and appreciate all the beautiful music you've created and wish you many more years of success!
I love you guys! Thank you for doing what you do and making such amazing records. I loved seeing Sharon doing that electric work, you go girl. You guys are are some of my heroes. Thank you!
@@JoeChaplain Do you live in New York where their studios are located? I, myself, am still desiring to break in as a lyricist/songwriter? If you know a musician who is in need of a lyricist, then please let me know.
At minute 6:06 I honestly felt the soul of Daptone through Cliffs keys. What is the name of the riff or track being played? No vocals....just drums and soulful keys
Surprised they didn't mention anything about Desco. I would like to see something that tells more about those years as Desco Records and then what caused the split into Daptone and Truth and Soul.
How do you fill the huge crater, left by Dan Klein, Sharon Jones and Charles Bradley RIP….? Unbelieveable talent, ripped away from us in their prime???
Nothing is better than a live performance, and technically, the process or recording sound is limited in comparison to what we experience live, as we're not only hearing but also feeling sound through our bodies. I've seen Charles Bradley live at the Hollywood Bowl, as well as Sharon Jones live in the same concert (headliner: Stevie Wonder). Live is always better with great acts, but to call these guys' studio recordings "totally messed up" is just disrespectful, sorry.
Big question, who is the smartest singer you ever worked with sonically, who knew thier instrument the best(?voice, what it needed) asking all the engineers
+Austin Walley On that album only 5 of the tracks were recorded at Daptone. Not the whole album. But, as you would expect, they were the best 5 tracks!
I think that dude Gabe was making a joke, I saw them eating noodles, so it was probably Chinese take out. As far as there being some kind of rule as to what a "proper soul band" should eat, I think there's no rules when you're hungry and trying to cut records! I like these guys cus they don't try hard to fit into an image, maybe you're mistaking them for hipsters that try too hard to fit into some kind of image?
Digital sounds like shit, and to think, all that analog studio tech was going for pennies on the dollar when the studios were switching over or was just dumped. I snuck in to(through a giant hole in the wall)the old Atco records building in Atco N.J., the place was abandoned and completely trashed, some of the analog stuff was smashed up by assholes, my friend who loves that old stuff almost started crying. He did save a 2 inch tape machine that he still uses. Had to clean off the pigeon shit.
I've had some discussions about the way Daptone records their projects with some pretty relevant recording and mixing engineers, they all give props. I don't know who you are, but I've never heard anyone who remotely knows anything about recording audio say that Daptone records things badly, so sorry, I have to write you off as just a hater (did you try to audition with them for an internship or something?)
They're eating sushi?!?!? Oh, man. What kind of a soul band eats sushi? A proper soul band eats catfish, chicken fried steak, jambalaya, chili, red beans and rice, bisquits and gravy, cheesy grits, anything cajun, casseroles, tuna or hamburger helper, cornbread, pancakes, and of course....four fried chickens and a coke.
Just my interpretation of that, but I think they did it on purpose, haha! It's no secret that they didn't really like the Amy Winehouse album (and even though I liked it myself, I can appreciate why these guys didn't really dig it, it does sound a little too much like a Motown rip off, but that was not on them but rather on the producer of the album).
somebody did a cool impromptu video of the Frightnrs band recording at dap tone, favorite'ed it, then it went private. why did ya pull the cool video? it didn't seem racy, rather kinda timid wit band cats talking up sound of a slow tempo rock steady lovers song. what y'all do there, we did 30 years ago in Vallejo, alongside the original MC's, got hundreds of original oldies and One Drop songs on reel, it ain't like what was in video is top secret, don't be scared, you don't even have to be cautious ...
