She was offered another apartment at the same rent and $20,000. She doesn’t own the property! How she feels entitled to hold the owner hostage is ridiculous. I know it’s tough having up move when you’ve called one place home for a long time but she pushed it a little too far.

4 years of free living using the 20K + 400$ a month calculation. 4 years is long enough to find something else after taking the deal. Greed is something else.

@@tailrj That's more than enough money to move to another apartment and cover the difference in rent between what she is paying now and what the current market rate is for a suitable unit in the city. Then she's able to rent a new unit in the new development at her current rate. Likely adjusted for whatever the legal rent increase during that time turns out to be. She is being unreasonable. Plus the new development creates more rental units than the current building which is in poor condition.

lol. What rights do you have if you don’t become an owner? Classic example of the risk of being a permanent renter. Buy property to avoid being evicted in your retirement and have no income.

$20,000 is more than enough to pay for relocation costs and cover the difference in rent between what she is paying now and what the market rates for a suitable unit would be in the city before returning to a new unit in the building at her current rate.
