Masca is a small mountain village on the island of Tenerife. It was originally a Guanche settlement before the Spanish conquest in 1496. The village is now home to around 90 inhabitants. The village lies at an altitude of 650 m in the Macizo de Teno mountains, which extend up to the northwesternmost point of Tenerife.
Forests including cypresses and palm trees abound. The village lies at the head of the Masca Gorge. The trail from the village down the gorge to the beach on the Atlantic Ocean is a popular, though strenuous, hiking route, which takes about 3 hours each way.
Garachico a town and district on the north side of Tenerife in the Canary Islands, Spain. The town has 5,450 inhabitants (2008) and is located below a cliff over 500 m high by the sea.
Garachico primarily consists of older buildings that are either renovated or in need of renovation. There are many small alleys and winding roads, and the coastline around the town is rough, but with small sheltered water bodies where you can swim. The town got its name from the rock island Roque de Garachico. Gara means island in the extinct Canarian language Guanche and the Spanish added chico - small, which became Garachico.
