My first day fishing with my new Tenkara fly rod. This is on the Oconaluftee River in the Great Smokey Mountains National Park, the NC side upstream of the popular Smokemont campground. Got a 10" brown and rainbow on a small BWO, missed a few others.

G'Day from Australia, That's a very pretty piece of water that you are fishing. Enjoyed your video very much. I bought a short 8 foot tenkara rod recently and have been trying it out on my local small creeks. No luck as yet but all the creeks are running high and muddy. I think I'll do better when the waters clear. Cheers, Steve.

THat method is without a doubt the CLUMSIEST ways and means to catch fish of any I have ever seen. Somebody tell me what possible advantage does this method offer over more conventional (and effective) fly fishing methods?

Forgive me for saying this, but this "Tenkara" method looks like a clumsy way to fly fish and not very much fun. I KNOW this river and it is a tough destination as it isnt a dapping type flow, not to mention that the fish are sparse and far between in that section. That you caught anything at all is a tribute to your skills. Ill bet you would really be more successful with proper conventional fly gear.

The fly fisherman of the early 1900s used cane poles and flies to fish these same waters. I myself find tenkara fishing very effective in western N.C. I am fly fisherman myself who said he would never use a tenkara rod but after learning the history of the area I found this method to be quite effective in smaller streams where traditional casting wasn't possible. I mean no disrespect by this comment. Just my humble opinion.

I agree with Donald! I rip and tear in the park with my tenkara, short fly line, long tippet euro nymphing is key!

Thanks for the reply Fireball Phill! I've caught many fish since I switched over to tenkara for the small streams and creeks. I just hate when people are so negative on other ideas and techniques.
