Video log of a tenkara trip to Big Paint Creek in Allamakee County on Monday, December 4, 2023. This creek contains wild brown trout, as well as stocked and holdover rainbow trout.
It was my good fortune to be fishing again with my friend Dre from the Rod & Rivet fly fishing shop in Decorah.
Although the day started out agonizingly slow, the fishing eventually improved and finished in the most memorable fashion imaginable.
For anyone wanting to skip to the grand finale, it starts at 10:55.

The beautiful foggy morning sunrise scene! Dreams! Incredible fish at the end! Loved the way that rod just had him pinned so well, you just knew he wasn't gonna come unhooked.

Thanks Chris! I appreciate your comment. It’s always amazing to me how well a tenkara rig performs in our smallish local creeks. I’m glad it extended to a fish of that size, I was definitely in unexplored territory! BTW, your videos are the best places there are to learn creative tenkara camerawork techniques…much appreciated.

Thanks I appreciate it. I often use the thumbnail to check out the first minute or so - to see if I’m willing to be assaulted by adds if I full screen it, so I must have missed it. Now I know , thanks

I was a longtime fan of its predecessor (the Nirvana 400) but the Ragnarok is definitely an upgrade. My only concern was how it would handle bigger fish and I’ve obviously answered that now! It’s my favorite 4 meter rod among all the U.S. vendors.

Thanks for your comments. I've been leaning to buy this. Already have the Shadowfire and Mizuchi. Both are good but the Mizuchi has been really nice. @@tenkaraintheiowadriftless

Wow, that was a nice fish! Congrats on ending the putting in style. Also, I really appreciate the way you set the stage with B-roll footage at the start of each video. Adds ambiance.

Thanks! Yes, they don’t get much better than that around here. The landscape and creek footage help me remember the anticipation and “feel” of the experience.

Thanks, i run the same net and tenkara set up - been reading up on Iowa driftless, planning on getting there this spring. did I miss what fly you were using?

In my videos I always show what fly I’m using at the start, in the upper left-hand corner of the screen. If I change it up I show the new one.

1 more question for you please. I have John Van Vliets Book "Trout Fishing in Northeast Iowa". He does not list - "Big Paint creek" instead he lists Paint Creek and Little Paint Creek, Can I assume his "Paint Creek " is the Big Paint Creek you are referring to here? thanks

Correct. We locals call it “Big” just to distinguish it from the other.
