Tomura has a great backstory, I recommend reading the manga to anyone who hasn’t to get a better visual of what happened in this episode, the author was snapping on the art.

No matter your thoughts on this season, I think everyone can agree they absolutely nailed Shigaraki's backstory.

It is incredible how tenko and deku despite traveling different paths, the turning point in their lives was because the two of them wanted to hear someone tell them -you can be a hero-

It's kinda crazy how much now with this backstory, Shigaraki and Deku's stories mirror each other. Both grew up wanting to be heroes, but for separate reasons, their dreams were rejected. They were eventually "saved" each by their own masters. during Season 1 was when they both spread their wings, Season 2 both of them had their ideals cultivated by their interactions with Stain, Season 3 they both "lost" their masters. Season 4, Deku fought and defeated someone with a similar dismantling quirk to Shigaraki, Season 5 Shigaraki is now fighting someone with a similar percentage/power-up quirk to Midoriya, and season 6 is where their paths are gonna converge. Horikoshi did it so naturally and so well many might've missed this amazing parallel.

man, the moment shiggy decays everything but his mom still run towards him to comfort him breaks the fuck outta my heart and soul.

Thing is with the Backstory is that this was A build-up of stress and abuse and when he went to others for help, They didn't do anything besides tell him "it's okay" and "your father means well". While Shiggy is 5 YEARS OLD, Being abused for even mentioning the thing that he loves and dreams about. so when he lashes out he at first is scared but deep down he knows. His sister threw him to the wolves basically to save herself. His Mom and Grandparents instead of actually doing something let it continue as long as it didn't go "too far", basically letting him suffer cause it wasn't too bad. And as a kindergartener, he doesn't fully grasp why it's happening, he grasps the "I'm hurting and begging for help, and all of you are watching and doing nothing about it"

I knew the episode would be heavily censored but I was actually surprised at how much they showed. Its not even close to being as brutal as the manga was but they still when further than I expected.

Shigaraki's story is so sad. He wanted his family to tell him that he could do it. That he could be a hero. But they never did, they just accepted what his dad said. Just told him to endure the pain and suffering. Until it all burst out.

Re-Destro's quirk is actually crazy when you think about it: He gets power from stress, so the worse a situation gets the more power he can accumulate.

The thing about Shigaraki, is that he is the foil to Deku. All the way down to what environment they were born into, and both were too young to mentally process what was happening. Where Midoriya wanted to be a hero but didn’t have a quirk at all, and knew he wouldn’t have one, his mother nourished and cherished his dream, even if it broke her heart. In Tomura’s case, he knew he would have a quirk, but his fathers resentment prevented it from being nourished. A parent should want to do things for their child, and have their child be able to look at them knowing they did something to set them in the right direction, rather than not do anything at all and risk the child not getting the direction they need. Even in anime, decent parenting can make all the difference.

It doesn’t surprise me Shigaraki’s memories were suppressed, it happens when you experience something very traumatic. Your mind does that as a survival tactic otherwise it would literally be very harmful especially as a kid, you can take my word for it. I’ve experienced it myself and I still don’t have all of my memories that were suppressed, but even the ones that resurfaced are fragmented and blurry for me still. Shigaraki’s whole origin story is one of my favorite origin stories, Hori did such a good job with his character and this whole episode was very good, it was still very impactful even for missing out on information from the manga

Shigaraki in this arc like: “Power ups? I’ll take ‘em all” Also, that backstory though…😞

The itching tick he kept having, then when he said “I didn’t itch anymore” gives me chills, craziest backstory I’ve seen in a long time.

When Shiggy killed his dog, sis and mom I felt really bad for the kid. First off the dog was innocent and actually helped him cope (killing the dog symbolized killing his innocence), second the sis threw him under the bus but they shared the same dream (killing her symbolized killing his dream of being a hero), & third his mom the first woman we all love (killing her symbolized his new birth). No matter how mad you were in the moment killing people you loved is gonna come with a lot of sleepless nights

Lesson is that, every villain has a story. It won't justify their evil deeds. But that doesn't mean it wasn't sad.

A huge parallel between Shigaraki and Deku. Midoriya ran into the top hero and became his successor while Shigaraki ran into the top villain and became his successor.

Hana throwing her brother under the bus is messed up, but she's also a kid in abusive environment scared of the repercussions. Ultimately it's all on that shitty dad. Nana may not have made the best choice regarding her kid lmao

They done *cut* most of Spinner's part from the arc in the anime and leave that line for 'taking some of Shigaraki's load' as his most memorable part for MVA. lol (refer to ch 220 for Spinner parts cut)

This season has been lukewarm at best, but the visual of Tenko’s mother racing towards him trying to give him a hug as she fades to dust, coupled with that haunting track playing in the background, is among the best scenes of the series.

When Shigaraki got happy holding his grandmothers picture, he looked just like Deku… btw when I saw the ep I knew Sheera was going to say “that’s what she said” 😂😂

the worst part is that tenko thought that he was being attacked by a villain, it wasn't until his dad hit him, that he decided that he was the one wanting to kill them, and it could had been prevented if his dad gave attention to tenko, his quirk didn't awaken when he killed the dog, it awakened with the ball

The OST and the voice acting was phenomenal this episode

This episode had more qualities of a Jojo episode than a mha episode: -A Dog was killed -Brutal killing -Tragic Story -sadness and depression

NGL, STUDIO BONES *KILLED* THAT FINAL SHOT OF SHIGGY KILLING HIS DAD(whom i don’t feel bad for), Plus…dang….his mom still tried to hug him as she was dying😭

Itching is actually one form of coping with anxiety or great levels of stress, so it has nothing to do with his quirk and more to do with his horrible mental state due to his father's abuse.

That scene where his mom runs to comfort him even after she is decaying absolutely broke my heart , it was so hard to watch

So I don't condone anything Shigaraki has done but this episode did make me feel sorry for him. Here I was thinking the destruction of the city showed a few episodes back was from a level up from getting All For One's abilities but boy was I wrong lol

All laughs and games when you realize that majority of the bad things that happened on MHA was all because of Nana Shimura not having any clue on how to be a mother

Shigaraki was always fast since his debut, he even dodged the quirk bullet the Hassaikai shot at him when meeting Overhaul.

As an anime only I personally love these recent episodes. The only thing killing my enthusiasm is manga readers telling me it sucks lol

GREAT Episode of MVA, and I'm SO glad this Episode if any was adapted near-perfectly. This was one that NEEDED to stay graphic for the sake of the tragedy & shakeup of the story, and I was worried they'd just have the bodies decayed into dust to portray them dead.....but nope, they kept them as pools of guts & blood, surprisingly. Next Episode, Shigaraki is gonna LITERALLY pop off, and I cannot wait for y'all to see the transformation of this character.

This week's and last week's episodes are my personal favourite. I have no problems with how they've animated them at all. The fact that they pulled my heartstrings twice (no pun intended) between the two and especially this episode says something even though I've read them before. The music did the justice as well.

The way I saw it the hands weren't really his family's, they all turned to dust. AFO used the fake hands to metaphorically hold Shigaraki back and calm until he could figure out who he was. I was wondering how they'd animate his backstory. It was pretty gruesome. And why no one went to "rescue" Shigaraki when he needed a hero? If you saw a child with that demented expression you might call an exorcist for the least. My thoughts on My Villain Academia. All Might and his predecessor... what a mess.

something I thought was also interesting was the scars on his face. reading this scene in the manga i never realized it (probably bc i was in shock lmao) but watching it in the anime the scar in his eye came from him being so desperate that he scratched his eye too hard, cutting it, and then i thought the scar in his mouth was also caused by his other hand, but it was actually from when his dad hit him with the metal pole. Two eternal marks he would forever carry with him. dunno why i wrote all this, guess i just thought it would be a nice detail to point out lol

Now that I saw Shigaraki's backstory and how his quirk manifested, it makes me think would it be possible for Eri to reverse this incident? (One has power to destroy and the other to revert/heal)

The tragic part from this episode actually when we used to hear bakugo say shineeee so many times yet it didnt gave you the feeling about hatred, then you can see the real villain born, he said it once and show the difference about it

This was brutal in the manga and it honestly made me feel sick to my stomach seeing how it all went down.

Basically explaining what happened as shigaraki wasn’t tryning to kill as he didn’t know he had a quirk. Hiss dog, sister, and mother were accidents as he was just trying to get help and didn’t know he had a quirk and that his quirk disintegrates whoever he touches… when he stabilized himself by touching the ground and killing his grandparents he knew it was his fault but not exactly how as he was in shock and the decay spread throughout the ground, the only on purpose kill was his father and that was after he hit shigaraki with a pole which unleashed his bloodlust and he saw him as a threat and remembered all the abuse he’d suffered. So no Shigarakis not a psycho just a scared kid who just gained his power for a total of 20 seconds and had already killed 5 people and a dog by accident

Imagine if his dad would have actually managed to kill him imagine how the show would change

I don't think Shigaraki's quirk was what compelled him to kill, or that his personality dictating his quirk - neither of these. His quirk helps him to "get rid of things he doesn't like". Sure, in an abusive environment that translated to his quirk manifesting and killing his "oppressors", but it always could have been used for good.

I always find it funny how we get takes like this: Anime only fans: Wow! that episode was great! manga fans: It wasn't as good as the first time I saw it... they could have done better. Yet the manga fans still fail to see that part of why they aren't enjoying the anime as much as the manga is because.... they've seen it already. There's nothing like your first experience with something so of course you won't enjoy it as much the second time around regardless of the format. If you really want to know if the anime is handling the adaptation well... look at the anime only fans reactions. Do they seem to be enjoying it? If so it's probably a pretty good adaptation.

This season was so amazing. It has been pretty awesome so far. 10/10. The animation was on point and the arcs have been epic too! My Hero Academia is 💥 The animation was so epic. Best animé ever.

8:24 omg I didn’t catch that! That was a good pickup and detail how they were all itching. On another note, his sister was really pretty and she looked so much like Nana! Even though she was a snitch who betrayed him, its still a shame the brother/sister superhero team never happened! I think besides Tenko, the mom suffered the most because she was married to an abuser, watched him hurt her son, tried to stop him, but couldn’t, wasn’t able to stop her son’s suffering, then she watched her daughter die, then was murdered by her own son. It’s so tragic because this episode made his desire to be a hero so similar to Deku, that it’s easy to imagine an alternate timeline where he became a hero and didn’t kill his family. The dad did try to kill him after what he did (even though it was clearly an accident since he was 5, and the kid was clearly traumatized), but the mom, to her credit, seemed like she wanted to help Tenko when she reached out to him, even after what she witnessed. The worst part was the dog’s death. No one can change my mind.

A reviewer said that the dad is basically what Koda would have been if Deku never came into his life and that put everything in so much perspective and kinda made me feel 1% bad for him

The other reasons Shigaraki's father was is such a negative head space is his own father died shortly before he was put in foster care. Plus Shimura told everyone she knew not to go looking for him. Kotaro had nobody to talk and grieve to.

Tenko's childhood brought back flashbacks from what happened when I was a kid. Abusive parents are horrible.

The disappointing fight aside, the backstory itself was done fairly well. They left some stuff out, and toned the gore down, but the atmosphere was still right, and the music only helped it. Pretty good adaptation tbh
