It's a difficult shot for several reasons. Down-the-line is not the most natural direction for the backhand. It's _always_ difficult to straighten a cross-court and send it down-the-line without accidentally sending it wide. Sidespin can make it easier, but sidespin is not common on the backhand, nor is it recommended on passing shots (because it passes the net man closer to the center, i.e. more likely within his reach). I guess it's worth the risk, though, because a net man is attacking and will likely win the point unless the defender hits a really good shot, and if the defender does make the down-the-line it is likely to be a winner. You don't need topspin on this shot because you have the entire depth of the court for the ball to come down in. Arthur Ashe said that for his backhand, topspin was mainly for hitting crosscourt; he would hit flat down-the-line.
