The major players in the world say: "Tennis is 90% mental". in other words, if you are not mentally strong, trusting your muscle memory, so you are lost. No matter how good you are about technique. Thanks for the lesson Dr. Patrick Cohn

Great point, but now tennis competition is ALL mental and you are only as good as your mental game is on that giving day. Which is why 90% of players struggle in their careers. freementaltennistips.com

This is very true. My last matches I was too focus about applying the techniques of t my strokes, I see now why I was not getting good results. Thanks.

Great advice Dr. Cohn. I would also recommend putting yourself in pressure situations that will help you get in that mindset. For instance starting the game at 30 all, or at duece. Or the server being down 30-40. Play lots of tiebreakers as well. The other advice I would give is to create routines and rituals that you can practice during match play. Bill Scanlon wrote in Zen Tennis that he used to keep track of all his practice matches, making it more meaningful for him. And finally I would recommend having a day where you practice your pre match routine and hone that down as well because that will allow you to have a quicker start.

@YraNecrem Also in practice your much more relaxed. Nothing is at steak and you have nothing to lose. In a match, because people are so nervous and tense amd generally playing someone they dont know, they make many unforced error.

Thank you for your video. I always wondered why there was a difference not only in matches but sometimes from week to week. I attributed it to something mental. I couldn't quite pinpoint what I was doing mentally wrong. Your video and advice was amazing...I finally understand why the discrepancy in my level of play. When I do drills, I'm focused on doing the best I can with my strokes, serves and etc. I focus a lot on my technique and consistency. I am not nervous and even though I strive for perfection, I feel ok when for example the ball is out but I hit the ball the way I wanted to and it was within a couple of inches. In matches I have the same mentality. I'm always analyzing my strokes and saying what could I have done to make it a better shot. Friends have told me that I should play drunk because I'm often so tense. The added pressure of a match and having the same mentality of trying to focus on strokes, serve speed and depth and paying little attention to strategy hasn't made me perform the way I want to consistently. I had a friendly match this week and during the warm up with person, I was much more consistent than my opponent. During the game, he played the same but I didn't. After watching your video, I thought about when I won points. Really it was when I was solely focused on strategy and didn't think much about my strokes. I can't believe a concept as simple as this never occurred to me. I can't wait to try this at my next match. I'm so excited. I really feel it'll make a difference to simplify and not have so many thoughts going on all the time...to trust my skills and focus on strategy. THANK YOU! (You can tell I'm obsessed with tennis).

Trusting my strokes and the science of gravity, etc...ah, I need to tell myself this. I played in a mother son tournament this Saturday. I didn't think about my strokes at all because we played the orange balls and it's for the kids so I'm not sure it counts...but I hardly made any errors and it a very easy to serve and play. I'm playing an adult doubles match this week, so we will see how it goes. I have much more difficulty playing doubles than singles. I think having someone else to please and worry about makes it very difficult for me. I'll try to think about the strategy...I have a feeling it's going to bring the stress level so much.

answer is very simple... when people play matches especially juniors, is because when they practice they just go through the motions and not practice like they would want to play. even in matches the main prob is they want to try to win the point rather then sticking to what they want to do. If you play matches focusing on their goals and also do the same in practice.. you will have the same goal and play somewhat the same instead of doing everything

"winning ugly" is a super short sided stragedy i would say. it doesnt help you get truly into your practice level ... just makes you play worse

Just focus on getting in the reps in practice daily or as much as you can, they will take care of your development part of your match play game, the other time you need to focus on mental training. You also need to check out this free course too- freementaltennistips.com

Uh-uh, this doesn't make sense logically. In this video the guy is saying that his students lose matches because the focus on the "how-to" rather than allowing the muscle memory to take over and thinking strategically. The problem is that in the introduction he implies that the students play better in practice which is why they want to be able to play like they practice. Well, if that's the case, why would you want to do something DIFFERENT in the match than you do during practice.

I think that the goal is to play more points so that you prepare yourself situationally. If all you do is hit 100 forehands that are fed to you will you be ready for a match. Also, when people play their best, which some call the zone, typically they describe it as very clear headed, that time slows down, and they are in the moment. When you play with the practice mentality and constantly think about your stroke during match play, it blocks your ability to be clear headed. Over analyzing your stroke will tighten you up and when we get tight, usually that's when errors happen. There are many techniques to help with focus and clarity. The one that I love is focusing on the seams of the ball. Really fun to do and when you get better at it, the ball gets bigger and slows down.
