Tennis Forehand Wrist Lag - Use THIS Simple Trick To Create Lag
On the tennis forehand, wrist lag will help you generate extra power and pop on the ball.
It acts as leverage over the oncoming ball, so it's important to maximise your racket lag prior to contact.
In this lesson, Coach Simon Konov of Top Tennis Training will show you a simple trick to help you create extra wrist lag on your forehand.

00:00 - What is forehand lag?

I do a lot of these tips in my golf swing, so as a newcomer to tennis, these concepts can be transferred from golf to the tennis swing and give me something to strive for. Golf has the coil, the wrist cock, the lag, leading with the butt of the club, transferring weight onto the left foot !

Awesome video! I was looking for something like this. I have both arms injured with tennis elbow. You talk about stiffness as a common reason of right arm injure but, may it also affect to the left arm in 2 backhanded player? Its true that I grip tight so...
@TopTennisTrainingOfficial
@TopTennisTrainingOfficial Месяц назад
100% it will impact the top hand on a two handed backhand also. If you’re gripping tight, your muscles are tight, and trying to fire explosively will often end in injury. Focus on relaxing your fingers, exhaling prior to contact and using the bigger muscle groups to create the power
@1S4Per

Thanks, Simon! One thing I didn’t see discussed is how the wrist does or does not move after the racket is in the lag position. Do you leave it loose and allow it to ‘flip’ forward on its own with inertia as the head follows through? Or is it more controlled via shoulder/forearm pronation through contact?

Is there some kind of stock film bank for forehands. It seems like I see the same forehand clips of pros over and over again.
@TopTennisTrainingOfficial
@TopTennisTrainingOfficial Месяц назад
No, that is our footage that we filmed at various events. We literally spent thousands of dollars on high end cameras and the travel to these events. The other channels and coaches who have been using the clips, took them from us without our permission and without giving us credit. It’s beyond a joke at this point, so many channels using our footage. Remember, I’ve been filming pros for over 20 years for my own use, and for 14 years for this channel
@opalpearl3051
@opalpearl3051 Месяц назад
@@TopTennisTrainingOfficial I am sorry to hear that. I am an IP attorney. You should look into getting copyrights on your videos before you make them available on RU-vid. This could potentially stop others from co-opting your work. Its a great channel by the way. I am a 3.7 player and am learning alot.
@TopTennisTrainingOfficial
@TopTennisTrainingOfficial Месяц назад
Thank you for the advice. I’ll look into how that works on RU-vid. We’ve had some disputes with RU-vid regarding the issue, they say that because the footage is already online, other channels can use it for educational purposes, which comes under fair use. Which I believe is true?
@opalpearl3051
@opalpearl3051 Месяц назад
@@TopTennisTrainingOfficial I picked this up from ChatGTP about fair use, it is very situation dependent. The fair use doctrine allows for the limited use of copyrighted material without permission from the copyright holder under certain circumstances, particularly for purposes such as criticism, commentary, news reporting, education, or research. Whether the use of your videos by others qualifies as fair use depends on several factors: Purpose and Character of the Use: Fair use favors transformative uses, where the new work adds something new or provides a different purpose from the original. For example, using your tennis videos to critique or analyze the players' techniques might lean towards fair use. Nature of the Copyrighted Work: Some works are more likely to be protected than others. Creative works, like your edited videos, typically receive stronger copyright protection compared to factual recordings. Amount and Substantiality: Fair use considers how much of the copyrighted work is used. Using small clips or excerpts may lean towards fair use, while using substantial portions or the entire work may not. Effect on Market Value: Fair use does not unfairly impact the potential market or value of the copyrighted work. If the use of your videos substitutes the market for your own exploitation of the work, it's less likely to be considered fair use. Other Considerations: Courts also consider other factors such as whether the use is commercial or non-profit, and the overall context of the use. If someone uses your videos online without permission and claims fair use, it's a legal defense that they would need to prove in court if you decide to challenge it. Fair use is often a complex and subjective determination, and different jurisdictions may interpret it differently. If you believe your copyright has been infringed and the use does not qualify as fair use, you may consider sending a takedown notice or seeking legal advice to enforce your rights.

@TopTennisTrainingOfficial
@TopTennisTrainingOfficial Месяц назад
Have a rest, let it settle down. You don’t get a medal for playing through pain. The wrist region is no joke, I’ve seen players miss months or even years of tennis from wrist problems
@c0smix601
@c0smix601 Месяц назад
@TopTennisTrainingOfficial hi I'm not sure if you're saying the problem is from my wrist but currently I don't feel any pain in my wrist but it's in between my thumb and index finger knuckles whenever I hit forehands, I do notice that if I get jammed by the ball and hit it too close to my body, I feel it in my knuckles but when I hit it in the sweet spot and also further away from my body, it feels fine
@user-le8km7jk3t

As an 8 UTR, the secret for me is to keep the pressure of the racquet going toward the palm of your hand untill you are ready to use your wrist
@RCGache
@RCGache Месяц назад
Not sure if anyone noticed this, but lots of people confuse the power coming from the arm vs. the shoulder rotation. The contact to the ball and driving of the ball comes from the arm with the rotation pushing the ball AFTER the contact with the ball. Rotating the shoulders first will kill the kinetic chain power coming from the arm and wrist lag you are promoting. Can you please do a video explaining this so people do not rotate too early? Thanks top tennis.
@TopTennisTrainingOfficial
@TopTennisTrainingOfficial Месяц назад
I think you’re greatly mistaken. Power does not come from the arm until contact. When you coil the upper body, you store explosive energy in the trunk muscles, mainly the obliques. When you uncoil, meaning you open up the shoulders from a side on position, to a front on position, the energy is released and transfers into the swing, creating racket head speed. This occurs prior to contact, and continues after contact. Not a single pro player hits their forehand in a coiled up position, they’ve already uncoiled to some degree. After contact, the upper body may continue to rotate, until the back shoulder, ends up facing the net. Andy Murray does this motion exceptionally well
@5ammy13
@5ammy13 Месяц назад
Hey Simon, forehand is a little like Rune's... In action, not outcome lol... I do feel that I'm using my forehand to maintain the racket head above my wrist.. Do you think this is bad?
@TopTennisTrainingOfficial
@TopTennisTrainingOfficial Месяц назад
It can be if you’re doing it extremely tight. Rune does get the racket back very early and it’s a much stiffer forehand than someone like Alcaraz or Roger, but because he’s a big guy and because he lifts the racket head directly above the grip, it reduces the pressure in his wrist

It's beautiful and easy to explain BUT it's almost impossible to replicate because it's hard to control. You can record yourself and it feels like you're doing it but the ball goes to orbit no matter how relaxed it feels. Just think about it: If it was easy, everybody would be doing it at the club level. Go to tennis clubs and see everyone with a stiff arm because it's the only way they can control it - and then a handful of excellent players how are able to execute it.
