For more tips go to www.2MinuteTennis.net • I forgot to mention the slice backhand uses the continental grip (same as the serve) • If you have an grip questions please ask them in the comments below!
I think this is one of the most essential knowledge a tennis play should have. If you get which bevel is to use for each stroke everything becomes easier. Thanks a lot. Quite informative.
I am new to Tennis and came across your channel. I just finished the video "top spin like a pro" and was looking for a video about the grip. PERFECT TIMING! Thanks
Thanks Ryan for this video. Just to confirm would you say forehand volley you use like beble 2.5 and backhand volley 1.5? And I think you explained most common forehand grip is at 3 and onehanded backhand grip at 1. (Ready position for volleys and return of serve at 2. I'm just starting tennis and just looking for a starting point. Cheers
Thanks for explaining so clear with great detail. Your volly grip is new to me so I will try it today. You covered all the grips in one video. Great job. Should the heal of your hand overhang the bottom of the grip any or stay totally on the grip?
Not using the continental grip for volleys seems weird... with little reaction time at the net it is important not to have to nove between forehand and backhand grips.
@@2MinuteTennis yes and i admit i adjust the grip myself if i have the time. However especially in doubles it's useful to be able to play a decent volley off both wings with a uniform grip.
Coach Ryan - could you tell me some of the reasons why when I stand close to the net and smash or volley, the ball still goes to the net instead of going over? thanks.
what are your thoughts on having the top hand on the 2HBH (im right handed so im talking about my left hand) on bevel 5 (full western) and my right hand closer to bevel 1? I have an instructor who keeps telling me that i should grip it that way but ive been doing some research and i think Nadal uses something similar to that.
Just checked out Nadal to be 100% sure. He’s not using the grip your coach is advising you to use. Nadal has his top hand on semiwestern (bevel 4) and bottom hand on continental (bevel 2). I would not advise you use 5 and 1. I see it often with club players and it almost always results in weaker backhands. That said, if you try it and like it then that’s what matters most. But 5 and 1 are never grips I recommend to students. And again, Nadal is nowhere near 5 and 1. Thanks!!
@@2MinuteTennis Thanks Ryan. I worked with him again today and i was mostly using continental on the bottom hand and eastern on the top hand. Seems i can get more lift and drive with this grip but they often get dangerously close to going long. I guess ill keep working on this grip but hopefully i can evolve it to get more topspin. Ive heard that the top hand on semi western is a good way to get some free topspin but i seem to then be running the risk of not having enough forward momentum.
That's extremely well explained, thanks, Ryan. And I totally get what you say about the volley! You added a note about the backhand slice. Your forehand grip is essentially for topspin or flat, I guess. But would you go even further round for an inside-out ? And would you go not as far for a forehand slice ?
You are great, this video is super. I play tennis for 15 years and I want to hear other opinion on subject of tennis. Thank you. I am from Sarajevo, Bosnia and Herzegovina.
Hi are you sure you got this right for the volley? Shouldn’t your hand be slightly to the left of continental grip for forehand volley, and slightly to the right for backhand volley? (for right hander player)
@@2MinuteTennis edit: after watching apparently i have a continental for serve, semi western for backhand and almost but not completely western grip for forehand. I might be wrong but is semi western the one that looks like its tilted 45 degrees to the right?
I had a racket sport for a college class and we played tennis. My professor only taught us the form on how to do the backhand, forehand and serves. He really didn’t teach us about how to hold the racket correctly or how to use the shapes on each of those positioning when the ball is coming at us. People hold their rackets like how you will hold a baseball bat. I’m starting to pick up and started playing tennis now because my pop’s and my cousins play for fun and I want to get involved. I was somewhat good in that class. If I knew about the positioning with the grip, I would’ve done really well and make nice inbounds contact. Thanks for explaining it nicely. Now I feel like I can actually make good contact with the ball instead of hitting the ball out of the court. I’ll keep rewatching this video to get a good muscle memory of it and get back to the comment section on how I improved. Thanks Coach
Thank you very much for your channel. I think it is the most useful of many tennis pro's channels and believe me: I have watched many of those. Still one question of your latest video: which grip is the best for the slice backhand and does it matter if you hit your slice deep, short or even drop shot?
Thank you so much for the compliment. After filming I realized I left out the slice and I put the slice Backhand in the description of the video you can use a continental grip for the slice Backhand and it should work fine for hitting a deep slice or even a drop shot. Thanks again
So good. Thank you! I've been fumbling with my two-hand backhand for years. This makes so much sense and now I feel like I've got a better foundation to work with.
Thank you very much for your videos !! You are a great tennis teacher. You explain everything very well. They are helping me a lot. Tus vídeos son fantásticos. Muchas gracias
Absolutely best demonstration of both FH, BH, Volly and serve grips so far! And by the way, all in one video which is really convenient. My brother has started to play so I've searched for the clearest and most comprehensive video I can find. This is it. Cheers😊
thanks for explaining in plain English and also thanks for not adding a silly music soundtrack , when I am trying to figure out whats somebody is saying i like to focus and not get distracted with any type of extra sounds
Brilliant explanation. It is that I just cannot hit one handed backhand with hand on bevel 1, I feel my hand out of shape. I use bevel 2. Do you think it will be worth spending some time trying to adjust to bevel 1? Thanks
Ryan, I could listen to you teach tennis forever! You're a gifted teacher/communicator. I just sent this video to a friend who's looking to start playing tennis. But one thing I realized could be added to complete this amazing video is the correct placement of your fingers as well. I was thinking about it from my friend's POV who has never played, even as i see how you position your fingers, how you place your fingers on the grip. I don't think any first-timer would know that automatically. Thanks in advance for your consideration. If you've done it already, plz share that link. Thanks in advance!
I have been watching many online coaching and I have to say yours suits me best and I can not say yours is the best but suits me BEST. I was 4.0 player self taught but after watching your many clips, and I am definitely on the way to 4.5. I love your forehand explanation. I am in Australia otherwise I like to meet you face to face. God bless you. Fr. Peter Jin
Is it okay , if i place index knuckle just around the corner bevel 2 for flat serve , i am unable to place the index knuckle and heel pad on the bevel 2 (plane) simultaneously.
Which grip should I use in the ready position 🤔. I'm just sure with the continental when I stand on the net. Have you anything on this topic? Thanks in advance 😄
