Well he is close. His backhand technique is pretty good for a tennis player, but the forehand isn't right (he hits too flat, with no top spin). Watch the lady he is playing against to see how it should be done - she has the correct hand and wrist angle and brushes the bat across the top of the ball, thereby naturally imparting top spin. Tennis players know how to do this - they can of course do it in their own game, but when they pick up a TT bat they don't naturally do it. Most of them in this video, make the classic TT beginner's mistake of bringing the bat up under the ball to loop it over the net, instead of coming over the top of it.

It is very different areas of muscles and tennis requires a higher level of control as everything is smaller. I am quite impressed at their ping pong skills though, -looks like they use it to train muscle control- since the racket feedback is very different, I think now playing ping pong can train their hand-eye coordination instead.

I guarantee you they are amazing at ping pong. None of them were trying

Davis Cup is tennis, not table tennis. They are two very different sports and, as this video proves, tennis players cannot play table tennis to save their lives. The only player in this video who would win a few games in our local league Division 4 is Murray.

Funny to watch them playing tennis-style at this game. On the forehand they play like they would on the court, lifting the ball up by getting the racket underneath it - in table tennis you are supposed to brush across the top of the ball to impart top spin. Of course, tennis players know how to do this and use top spin on high bouncing balls but in TT their brain doesn't naturally tell them to do it.

@@manamemajeff6283 Table Tennis originated in England but was taken up in United States in early 1930’s but never really caught on as an excepted Sport by the masses due to baseball, American Football, and basketball popularity and the use of pips out hard paddles and sandpaper paddles. ( There is only so much you can do with these rackets). It became a parlor game in people’s basements in U.S. and never really overcame that stigma as a low speed, non- athletic game. Now with the internet it’s getting it’s just do with more American’s seeing it played at such a high level. The huge and rich American market for Table Tennis is untapped but could take the Sport to new heights with proper promotion to young people.

As far as I know tennis copied the block and half volley from table tennis. Played just off the bounce.
