Remote Norway-Russia border at Grense Jakobselv 🇳🇴🇷🇺

Stunning area, in more ways than one. I drove from Kirkenes, Norway to the Russian border along the tiny Jakobselv River in the far northeastern part of Norway. The road turns to gravel and leads up to the Barents Sea, part of the Arctic Ocean. This day was, fortunately, sunny. Along the way I stop to take a look at the Russian guard towers on the other side, some buildings that were among the very first liberated by the Soviets in 1944, and the landmark King Oscar II Chapel.
Then the last few meters of dusty road lead to the brutal winds and stunning beauty of the open Arctic Ocean. There's a small parking area and, surprisingly, even a few other people there. The capper, maybe, was just witnessing a seal swimming off the rocks of the coast.
All in all, this was a dream drive come true for me, and a fine way to end this epic Norwegian road trip. Grense Jakobselv and the unnerving Russian border area delivered!

I used to work near Murmansk for over a year and drove to Norway quite a few times during that period. Interestingly, this place never felt like border between Russia and Europe to me. Severe landscapes, grey skies, unfriendly rocks and moss - they all look the same on both sides. Absolutely beautiful polar nature... Kind of a reminder that we all share one planet and that borders are just lines on the map.

There is no “Europe-Russia” border, nor does Russia represent the “Asian world” as the video creator stated: 1) Russia-proper is a European country, albeit a rogue one at the moment, but fundamentally part of the the same East Slavic brethren of Ukrainians and Belarusians (making the current Russian invasion even more abhorrent, as there is a fratricidal element to it) 2) the Russian Federation is best understood as a European empire holding numerous territorial possessions in central and Eastern Asia This is one of the primary misunderstandings that helped lead to the current war. For many years European analysts have been talking about how Putin is “pivoting east” in foreign policy, but that ignores the fact that, to the Russian leadership and populace, geopolitical effectiveness and prestige is measured through actions taken in Europe. Russia fundamentally looks west, even when at odds with the other European powers.
@MrOvnours
@MrOvnours Год назад
@@TheLocalLt My comment was in regards to visual appearance, with no political, historical or ethnical context. Russia does not look like Europe and Europe does not look like Russia, you always note the difference as soon as you cross that border in Baltics, Poland or even Finland. But not here for some reason. As for your point, i don't think of Russia as of an Asian country of course, nor do i think of it as a European one. Probably i think so being part of Russian populace myself, and to me Russia is Russia, and Europe is Europe. Russia sure has numerous fundamental historical and cultural ties with Europe. Russian writing came from Greece, Russian religion came from Byzantium, Russians and Europeans enjoy the same art, literature and other cultural heritage, some western Russian cities look European and some eastern European cities look Russian etc etc. But you can say the same about America - it too shares cultural heritage with Europe and is Europe's offshoot if you will. But it's not Europe, and it's not an ocean that parts them, but centuries of social, cultural, mental distinctiveness which made America America, not just former British colony. It sure is oversimplification on the brake of ignorance and i apologize for that in advance, but it's pretty much the same with Russia. It might be European by origin, but not by nature. Russia's geopolitical effectiveness is measured by actions taken in Europe because it's mostly Europe where Russia's vital interests are and it's only the West that is capable to challenge and deny those interests. Economically speaking Russia is relatively small and it doesn't have that much ambitions beyond Europe. No ambitions; hence, no rivalry; hence, nobody to measure penises with, pardon me.
@TheLocalLt

Being close to a border is unexplainably fascinating, as one or more steps separate you from total change. Make a step and everything is changing: money, people, language, politics, laws, traditions and so on. I visited extreme points of my own country, Czech Republic and also made a memory in form of a vlog. Nice to see how it looks in spring - I’ve been there in the winter. One note: at 01:44 it says that Norway is in the EU (!). Of course it’s NOT. And does not have the Euro also for that reason. But it’s part of Schengen, which is a totally different story (Switzerland and Iceland are also Schengen countries, in spite of not being part of the EU)

Great Video! I travelled to the Grense Jakobselv several times including one trip under the midnight sun in June! Also crossed the International Border a few times way back during the more friendly 1990s by both the regular Kirkenes-Murmansk Bus (no longer running) & by Car. We love the wild nature & wildlife (even wild bears!) of the Pasvik Border Region both during summer & winter!

The little red shack at the ending has a sign that says "Kobbholmen Båtforening". Kobbe is a type of seal, either Bearded Seal(Storkobbe, although stor=great) or Harbour Seal(Steinkobbe, although stein=stone). Both types are native to the area. Holme is Norwegian for "islet". So the sign says "Seal islet boating association". Also, we had a Kobben-class type of diesel-electric submarines in service from the 1960s to about 2000. The type was named after Norways first submarine Kobben or "The Seal" from 1909.

the story on the chapel is more significant than you know! Ever since the first Norwegian settlement in Grense Jakobselv in 1851, there had been a desire among the Norwegian population to have their own chapel. Furthermore, after the border dividement in 1826, there was disagreements between the Norwegian authorities and Russian fishermen about the national border. After reports of several harsh confrontations between the Norwegian authorities and Russian fishermen, the county governor in Finnmark proposed to let a warship from the navy carry out fisheries supervision during the months the fishery. The Ministry of the Interior wanted an independent investigation of the conditions and sent Captain Lieutenant Heyerdahl north to look into the matter. Heyerdahl did not share the county commissioner's view of which solution would be the most useful, and he instead proposed to erect a chapel at Grense Jakobselv. The greek ordodox russian at the time, never challenged the border after the church was build.

@@T1DWanderer wouldn't it be interesting to know your ancestral journeys? There might be a great great grandfather that was a happy wanderer just like you. Maybe you are retracing his steps like a bird with a built n migratory GPS and you don't even know it. I lived in NL for awhile and it turned out that my Huegenot (Protestant) ancestors fled France in 1685 and settled in Amsterdam before coming to the US. It was weird because of my sort of my innate affinity for NL. I attended their baptismal church in Amsterdam which to this day features sermons in French. Genetic memory?
