Tension headaches are real! And incredibly frustrating.
I had one this morning, so join me as I talk through the actual steps I took to fix it. Now Stella’s stitching like a champ 👍🏻

For me sometimes it is the spring inside the bobbin case. Love you Video’s. So happy to watch someone who has a Bernina. I have a Q20.

11:34 on April 4th. The one thing my Bernina dealer told me to do when all else fails is to run the edge of a paper business card under the tension bar in the bobbin because sometimes a bit of lint gets under the metal bar. It has saved my bacon a couple of times.

Yes this! Especially if you run cardboard sided prewound bobbins. That cardboard dust really packs under that outer spring.

Yes! I didn’t do this one this morning, but I’ll tuck it in my scheduled tension talk. This one was impromptu 😁

I only got my longarm in December. After a couple of tests I decided to dive in and practice on my quilts. Oh the tension! Such a headache when I changed the thread. Found a tutorial on Handi Quilter (which is my longarm make) and this guy was using a Towa gauge. Got one from Amazon and boy was it amazing. The dropping of the bobbin looked OK to me, but it was still way off. Game changer and I've finished 2 quilts merrily playing away, although I have a spare bit at the side to test first. Thank you for going through other pointers which will undoubtedly happen as I go along! (oh I'm in Devon, England)

Hello from Kansas 🌻 it’s very important to make sure your presser foot is up when threading. Enjoy quilting that lovely top!

What a great video. I'm sure that most longarmers can remember a time when tension issues brought them to tears or at least near tears. How do you find a thread burr? I would love to learn how to check the thread path for burrs and then how to repair them myself if you are looking for material for one of your April shorts.

I don't have a Bernina but I have a babylock regalia and if my bobbin isn't the problem then before I rethread I always make sure to floss the thread between the tension discs, sometimes if changing thread or quilting and letting it sit (even overnight) and the change in weather or humitity can cause the thread to relax or flex and loosen from between the tension discs, most of the time that fixes my issue (saves on rethreading again)...just thought I would throw that out in the universe...might help someone. Hugs and Blessings from Missouri.

When you look at the towa gauge how do you know what number is “right”

Thread manufactures will sometimes suggest one, or machine brands will often give a recommendation. If you’re in a Facebook group with people who have your brand, ask there. There’s a wealth of info and experience in those groups.

I believe you used to have a Gammill…what reasons made you switch to Stella? Just curious. 😉 I still have a Gammill, so far she still works like a champ.

When you had your gammill could you use glide. I have tried it but have not had success. I have tried many things. If you did use glide was your top tension real loose? What was your needle size? I used warm and natural cotton batting with the glide. Also have you ever sewn with a polyester 3/4 batting? Took some doing but got it to work. Had to use a 130/21 5 needle and loosened the top tension two turns. It was an experiment. I don’t really like the 3/4 poly.
@pamelaburch4484

I used Omni thread on the 3/4 batting
@StitchedBySusan

I did use Glide successfully, although not really often. My Gammill rep (which was Andrew Weaver back in the day) actually suggested HIGHER top tension for 100% poly threads, as they have a wee bit of stretch. For my machine, that worked well. And I haven’t tried the poly batting. I still have Mountain Mist nightmares🤣 my most common is 80/20 Heirloom Premium by Hobbs. It has a bit of the loft poly offers, but still has that cotton feel and crinkly look when washed.

The hobby’s 80/20 is my go to batting also. Just ordered a roll.
