Getting a great fretting hand technique on the bass can be a real struggle! 😩
Many of us started playing without having someone to show us the correct way of doing things - we simply picked up the bass, cranked up the radio and started grooving the best we could, and learned along the way.
While there is absolutely nothing wrong with this, it can cause some bad habits to arise. Adopting a relaxed approach to the instrument is vital for developing a clean & fluid technique.
This clip is taken from the SBL Beginner Learning Pathway, just one of the resources that form the SBL Beginner Journey! If you're just getting started on your bass journey this program will cut out the noise & get you learning bass the easy (and fun) way!

Those are guitarists trying to play bass 😅 they don't realize you're actually vibing instead of stressfully fingering super complicated chords

Same for (electric) guitar too honestly, classical guitar kind of mandates that kind of grip to be able to reach stuff but electric necks are comparatively tiny and you can do thumb wrapping and all sorts of stuff that is not well served by having a super "rigid anchored thumb"

Strange, I've played guitar for 20 years and never tried to play a cord on a bass. This is a beginner mistake that has nothing to do with guitarists. What a stupid ignorant comment

This is actually super useful information, don't always go on what you see other people doing, everyone needs to find a stance with their hand over the neck that suits them and their style of playing, straining your fingers over the fretboard isn't going to really help unless it suits the occasion

I think it’s that some teachers really try ingrain us with the idea that there’s a proper position and otherwise you look self-taught, are lazy, play inefficiently, etc But this sounds like I similar evolution many sports went through. Think about the 1900 style of boxing with two dudes with mustaches bicycling their arms and standing there taking punches. Compare that to bobbing and weaving and developing each boxer’s own styles. I think Ian’s saying we can dodge punches and build on what comes naturally.

I think the phenomenon of people teaching guitar and especially bass and being anal about hand positioning is so harmful, it makes playing seem harder than it is. Same goes for notational stuff, the less you know before you start plucking notes the less confusing it is. i dont think theres a point in even telling someone what the instruments tuning is until they can groove a little.

Huge thanks - it’s the first thing I work on with new students and I was looking for an item everyone grabs. Phone! Also I’m a fan of how you deliver bass wisdom - with no tension at all. Cheers!

Oh god thank you. I've spent the last three years with teachers trying to teach me proper technique and although I've improved in some ways, I've lost a lot of my feel and groove

I dont disagree but how does this work with 1 finger per fret? You stretch to the note only right before you play it?

Right, keeping in the groove is antithetical to tension.

Yeah. Nice and easy. You'll spend less on fretwork, too. When I was doing setups, I used to see a lot of neck stranglers. It's hard to break habits that you've learned, but relaxing and as much economic movement as possible really will be beneficial in the long run.

Yeah, I see you and Scott end players like Thundercat and I wonder how do they hit those notes so clean with their hand just on the neck like you’re holding a butterfly.

I have a question. what about angling the arm and the hand toward the part of the neck I'm on? Leftward near the headstock, and a little rightward near the body? (I put it on my left leg and angle the neck upward a bit).

And never have a *claw* hold on the bass. You need the "meat" of your fingers in contact with the high string, it's free left hand muting.

@devinebass
@devinebass 3 месяца назад
When you play chords, consciously check in with your body and relax your shoulders and arms. Also, check that you're not trying to crush the strings onto the fingerboard, Gary Willis has a really useful video on regulating finger pressure!
