Ladislao Martínez, better known by “El Maestro Ladi,” was born June 27, 1898, in the Espinosa neighborhood of the town of Vega Baja, Puerto Rico. At an early age, Ladi began to study the cuatro under the tutelage of Joaquín “La Paloma” Gandía and Carlos Soriano until he finally decided to try his luck in the island’s musical market by moving to the the capital, San Juan, and forming a trio.
In 1922, he became the first cuatro player to play in Puerto Rico’s first radio station, WKAQ. Ladí distinguished himself as more than just a greatcuatro player. He was also a prolific composer who wrote hundreds of melodies for the instrument: “El gallo, la gallina y la guinea,” “Montuno Criollo,” and the mazurkas “Aurora” and “María,” to mention only a few.
With his “Grupo Aurora,” he achieved great success, recording dozens of records with several different record companies.Many attribute him the popularization of the Cuatro aviolinado [violin like] of five double strings. Ladí died on February 1, 1978, in Rio Piedras, Puerto Rico. His legacy is an integral part of the repertoire of every modern cuatro player.
