Our EP is called "The Things We've Been Afraid To Say", and so, perhaps a bit ironically, it ends with a song about listening. We're told in Scripture be slow to speak, quick to listen. When someone comes to you with deep secret - a shameful secret - what's your first response? Is it, "ew! I can't believe - Ew! That's ew!" ?
Or is it more of a gospel infused reaction? Where, no matter what that person is telling you they've done, or what's been done to them, you respond with grace-filled language. A response like, "oh, is that all you got?".
I would argue that that's the only appropriate first reaction when we hear of some secret, shameful thing, because deep down we believe that the blood of Jesus is stronger than the worst of our sin. That's what I'm trying to communicate in this song.
Mother, sister, and brother. I have a mother in my life, a sister in my life, and a brother in my life. We've all experienced the tragedy of sexual abuse, and as I leaned into all three of their stories, I found a common thread that they felt no safe place to bring the secret, and it got me thinking, man, so many of us are so quick to tell people what's right and wrong, we're so quick to offer our opinion, but we're told in James be slow
to speak. We're told in Romans: weep with those who weep, rejoice with those who rejoice.
And so I say sometimes - I don't know if you saw that movie Inside Out, you remember that Pixar movie, and then there's that moment that Joy - she looks and Sadness has helped make the girl feel better, and she goes, "how did you do that?" and she said, "sometimes being sad with someone is what brings them to
healing".
And so the next time someone comes to you with a big, bad, dark secret, man, I hope you know that you have been privileged by God to do as Jesus did, who, before Jesus came to fix it, He felt it. Right? Before Jesus healed anyone, He lived among us for thirty years.
So, take a pause, take a breath, and before you say anything, say, "I'm listening".

I was literally tearing up watching this video and remembering the end of the movie Inside Out--I guess I never thought about that; that Jesus felt things and lived experiences with us for 30 years before he even began on his mission to heal people. How thankful I am for this! Thanks for the reminder, Mike! 💜

@@tabithawhite5175 such a sweet response! God has been terrifically gracious in the past 10 months. I was able to share my deep pain with my counselor and now-fiance, and I've grown so much! Thank you for your prayers, that's the most precious gift

I always cry when I listen to the song "I'm listening" it hits home base with me not only because it was hurtful, but it allowed me to reach out to others who felt the same as me and let them know that Jesus loves them. "I'm listening" is one of my saved songs on spotify and i pause every time to remember that I am not alone. Thank you Tenth Avenue North.

This guy has wisdom beyond his years. Appropriate response to shameful confession sounds a lot like grace. The church could use more of that, much more of grace. I like what you said Mike "Before Jesus came to fix it, He felt it!". Great words.

When I was with my first serious boyfriend he decided to take what was meant to be mine to give to my husband. I couldn't tell anyone, I was ashamed, damaged, so many things I can't put to words, and for two weeks I slept on the floor, barely coming out of my bedroom. I was cutting, starving, taking handfuls of pills to try and pretend that nothing happened because I figured everyone would blame me, it would turn out to be my fault. My dear friend lived in a college sponsored residence called Campus Christian House, and she called me wanting me to come to the women's retreat and stay with her for like a week. The very first day we walked to one of our favorite parks and as we were swinging my secret poured out of me. I told her I was fine and to let it go that it was my fault, but she wouldn't listen. She prayed with me, sat beside me as we emailed my doc who took care of my anorexia, and she walked with me to the doctor's office to tell him what happened to me. Though I was in a very dark place, I didn't want anyone to know, I didn't want to even be alive anymore. I needed to be in the hospital because I couldn't control my anorexia at that point, I wanted to be empty, eating made me feel the way I Felt when he hurt me. My doc and friend with such kindness sat with me at the hospital, held my hand when they put a feeding tube down my nose, and stuck by me through everything that followed. It took years to heal from what happened, to forgive and move forward. My faith was tested, but the love of Christ was always there when I fell. At 32, I've just escaped a very abusive relationship and I have been raising my little boy on my own, something my abuser told me I could never do because of the medical things I have, but everyday God is there, and He has put people in my life who just sit and listen in the hardest moments. After I testified in court I didn't think I could hold onto my nine years of recovery from self harm and anorexia, continue to be a good mom, but there was a friend that just sat with me and let me cry, prayed with me...i don't think people understand how much just sitting back and listening can help someone. You don't always need to have to words to respond, just the loving heart to listen and love.

Thank you for this reminder! And I thank God for using you to remind us to pause and listen and not judge others. Not easy when the mind wants to run 100 miles a minute but very, very important. Love you my brother in Christ! ^_^

You make some of the hardest things to have empathy with others about, so much easier to understand. I'm intrigued by the way you teach, also impressed by your scripture memorization. ( I can hear skepticism now..."was that KJV version, if not, we are done with him 😂😂) I know these vids are leading up to your new project. But would love to see more of teaching wisdom you want to share! Its been insightful. Thank you!!Can't wait to get your new project!

Wow, love watching the holy spirit walk with you through these videos Mike. Your clarity on these topics keeps amazing me. Yes, listening, being non-judgemental and bringing peace instead of friction into all situations is a strong skill we all need to learn! I pray I can stay humble and listen so I may build them up, not offend🙏

I totally agree with u Mike..love Ur teaching videos....it's not only the dark secrets but sometimes if anybody brings deep hurts and sorrow to a person..they should never be judgemental...they should just be in a position to listen rather than pass judgements...it's something I never got during my sorrowful times...Greetings from India☺️
