A true masterpiece....beautifully, lovingly performed (the soprano is spot-on in everything she sings). About 20 years ago, Zubin Mehta conducted this work with the Chicago Symphony (1st-half of the concert; 2nd half= the Bruckner 4th!!?). I had the honor of interviewing George Crumb in a pre-concert talk. A pretty reticent, modest guy, whom I soon realized was not really "into" discussing the music in great depth and detail; great creators rarely do that. Being a composer/creature of the "late-hippie" era (as I called it) myself, I attempted to tell the audience (and composer) just how IMMENSELY influential his music was on so many of us back then. I then warned him that my next question might be a bit silly and "starry-eyed", but I nonetheless asked if he recalled the time, the situation, and the inspiration of using the Bach song (toy piano) mixed with the dark, "sweltering", funereal sounds of marimba tremolo, "u-e-a-u-e-a" humming in the percussionists' voices, and harmonica (all C# Major triad), to depict the midday death of a child in Granada in song #IV. I had just hoped for a tiny bit of insight into one of the great imaginative voices of the 20th-century..from the MAN HIMSELF. But he didn't have much to say in response. Probably better that way. LR
I first heard this work about 50 years ago and found it fascinating. To this day I feel the same way about it. And in spite of all the music I've heard in a half-century I still find it unique.
