The Nayaks of Madurai controlled this Kingdom from 1545 until the 1740s, with Thirumalai Nayak (1623-1659) being one of their most renowned kings, known for several constructions in and around Madurai. Traders, missionaries, and visitors to the Madurai Kingdom in the 17th century included Portuguese, Dutch, and other Europeans. Many parts of the buildings were destroyed by conflict throughout a 400-year period; nevertheless, a few are sufficiently repaired to be used by the garrison as granaries, storehouses, and powder bunkers during the East India Company's reign. According to British sources, King Thirumalai Nayak's grandson dismantled much of the beautiful structure and removed the majority of the ornaments and woodcarvings in order to establish his own palace in Tiruchirapalli.
