Any thoughts on revising it with your skills now? I assume you're well aware the issue with both the original and your CG version is the animation is too floaty- the T-800 moves like it weighs 15 lbs, not 235 lbs (Arnold at the time), much less the 400-640 lbs fictional weight of the T-800.

My favorite change that you made is the close up shots, where you kept it facing directly into the camera. The puppet couldn't really articulate its neck, so its head moved wherever the torso went. Your version never breaks eye contact. It's just lifelessly staring through your soul.

i dissagree, in fact he should have left the puppet part, in fact it would be a shame to let the really cool looking puppet go to waist, that is more realistic looking than the blender, however the parts covered in darkness and the STOP GO MOTHION parts look fantastic. he did an exlilent job with smoothing up the choppy effects form the stop go motion.

@VariusMayhem 3 года назад
A metal skeleton chasing you down a dark hallway, no matter if stop motion or 3D animation, IS scary. But 3D animation made it that much more fluid and thus added to the blood chilling effect. The original was mostly a static prop with glowing eyes, the entire motion came from the torso. You added neck movement, giving the T-800 an even scarier touch. It is searching for you, noticing you, coming for you. That truly added to the fear factor. Well done.

@VariusMayhem 3 года назад
@@phrixos2826 Then explain to me why the Terminator turned around while coming around the corner utilizing its torso, while in the make-over, it turns its head with a short move of the neck. Either it was a static prop they moved around on the torso or they couldn't move the neck mid-take for one way or another. I mean they used a large and chunky hydraulics pump (I guess?) to move the endoskeleton out of the wreckage and flames, seemingly the animatronics back then were not as sophisticated as in during the making of Jurassic Park. Fact: The neck movement is more frightening.

Actually at that point it weren't anymore T-800 since it didn't have its skin. Programwise yes but T-800s are based on endoskeleton named T-101 or CSM-101 (Cyberdyne Systems Model) to say it differently since it means the same. And to mix it even more James Cameron stated that "...the model 101s all look like Arnold Schwarzenegger. That makes me wonder what is the difference between T-800 and T-101 when James Cameron says something like that? Edit. Found the explanation: the Terminator endoskeleton is a T-800, while 101 means Model 101, which is Arnold Schwarzenegger's skin and likeness, crafted onto the T-800 endoskeleton. So I was wrong on my original stating.

You're right. I think the main reason is that CGI will never look as good as practical, which much of James Camerons work was practical. I think the only way to make this better is to completely remake the model and capture as much of the original movements as reference, then mocap and track the scene in full, which is obviously costly. @@TAURON85 It should be noted that 3D model only replaces a few shots here, mostly those made with stop motion. Otherwise 70% of what you see here are original animatronics from the movie. In my humble opinion in both cases long shots are a firm weak spot of effects: CGI is better with lighting, but stop-motion has better gasp on character movement. Most of the shots replaced were not by Stan Winston (there are eight stop-motion shots of endoskelton and all of them were by Fantasy II artist Doug Beswick) and while the job is really hands down impressive for one VFX artist their skills are uneven (that's why VFX departments are huge), so there are some weak spots in compositing and animation. There are no problems with that animatronic. The only problem in that scene is cutting from putting sunglasses on to real arnold fixing his hair in the mirror. It needed another cut to kyle in between to make it work. Like in alien, abrupt cuts between prop and actor just emphasizes how fake the prop is. After the terminator repairs itself, we don't see all that much or closeup of arnold anymore, and although you can see Arnold's real eyes through the glasses when he leans in for "i'll be back", the rest of the movie does a good job mixing takes of real/prop in a believable way. Jump cuts from prop to real are bad

You done a great job and it looks very realistic. My comment is about the fact I dunno what anyone else thinks but to me the way that the stop motion (original version) looked made it creepy as hell and I feel the complete realness of things nowadays takes that creepy unexplained inorganic movement out of movies to the point where it’s just real and therefore doesn’t feel out of sorts which I feel played on your mind and made you feel a certain type of way. Now I was brought up watching the old style so I have no idea how people of this age think about it, but what I do know is we all used to rave about films back in the day and nowadays people mostly criticise every new movie that comes out.

If they ever decide to enhance The Terminator with CGI officially, then you should be the one they employ to do it. This is done in such a perfect way that doesn't detract from the movie, and only served to improve on it. I’m a long time fan of the franchise, despite recent iterations...and I must say, for a fan made redo on free software, this is great work... Please take anything I say after this with a grain of salt and recognise it’s meant as constructive feedback on something’s as a fan I noticed which if you were to give this a second go after taking various feedback to make it even better then awesome. None of what follows is negative disparagement When emerging from the fire, the model used was clearly different enough that the change was “obvious”...namely that the teeth seemed overly large, almost cartoonishly so in their size and human whiteness as opposed to the original full sized mannequins subdued colours and size... The animation itself was BRILLIANT and got rid of the jerky ness etc, the main thing I’d suggest there is trying to add a bit more texture focus...again I understand this is homemade fan work, but one key element to good cgi in this age is when there’s switches between cg models and practical props, the cg should try and match the texture details of the physical props, such as reflective surfaces being more reflective, or seeming an almost different colour. And after seeing another comment on this point, I’d agree that taking the first bit of Kyle and Sarah backing away and up the stairs, since you can here the sound effect of “terminator vision”...taking a few frames of that footage, putting the red filter and some of the tech read outs in...maybe 1-1.5 seconds worth... The old saying in film with various effects, be they practical or cg is coming back in however many years and thinking “hmm, this did(n’t) age well” Considering the levels of cg available at the time were barely existent, I’d say that IF this was what was professionally created by the studio on big Hollywood budget at the time...it would be viewed with the same level of “did it hold up” as the stop motion did in the original...it was GREAT in its day, but we as a movie audience have been spoiled rotten the past 20+ years... So summed up, this is very well done, no one is denying, nor is it worth denying that given some time and a few tweaks, it can’t be denied it could also be better...but it’s still beautiful to see 👍

To be honest, the original stop motion in this scene was leaving quite a lot to be desired. Lack of technology wasn't an excuse back in '84, because I've seem much more fluent stop motion being done back in the 70s. It was either laziness, or Cameron was running out of money and/or time. I know he did run out of money, which made him film a few scenes illegally, but I'm not sure if that's the same reason which caused the stop motion in this scene to not be so good.

Really awesome work mate! A few bits were even better than the original movie - In particular the terminator head and eyes aimed at the camera instead of offscreen when they're going up the stairs is great! Really elevated that scene. Other areas had some criticism from me: I think you lost a little bit of the "urgent powerful" movements of the terminator that the original had, particularly in the door break scene. Though what you did was extremely close! The terminator itself would have fit into the scene more if you went for a less chrome material. It needed to be more diffuse and never really pure black dark (due to the chrome reflections). Otherwise definitely the best remaster I've ever seen! Watching this made we want to watch the movie again. :)
