When I lived in Texas, we had bait stations around the house like they show here, but ours were spring-loaded so that when the cellulose bait material was eaten away enough, a brightly colored rod would pop up sticking out the top to indicate a new bait pack needed to be installed.

I used something like that in AZ. But I think they were just 'monitoring stations'. I was supposed to call an exterminator when I saw one of those orange sticks pop up. I'd prefer the inexpensive, colony killing option instead.

$10,000 no, but several thousand, yes. What Tyler forgot to mention is, just because you pay the thousands to put the system in, you don't own it, and if you don't pay the several hundred dollar, annual maintenance fee, the contractor will come out and remove the system. At least that's what happened in my case. I bought a house that had the system installed, and the contractor kept sending me a bill for maintenance, which I didn't want to pay; he came out and pulled the system. BORAX is your friend! @quallzone6219

No, they are not very effective against termites compared to most other solutions. Most subterranean termite species generally reside several inches underground. Sprinkling pesticide granules like lawn fertilizer may reduce ants and other surface-dwelling insects, but after watering the lawn, the chance of the chemical penetrating deep enough and still be potent enough to kill a colony is extremely low. Of course, you specifically mentioned termite poison and not *Nematodes* which are different.

There are very few termites that eat live wood, most (really all that ought to be of concern to home owners) are ones that eat dead wood. So I don't really see a need to do this on live trees... The mulch around the house though is a good food source for them though (unless it is treated). Hard to keep mulch away from the foundation though when it is used for landscaped areas.... But an ideal situation is to keep mulch 3 or 4ft away from the foundation minimum.

Because the same termites that will eat a live tree will also eat the dead wood in your house, and can do so at the same time.

Terminix doesn’t use sentricon. They use Trelona. They received a major incentive to switch from Sentricon to Trelona due to their agreement to purchase large quantities of a certain pesticide (manufactured by the same company as the bait system) for their household pest control side.

Has anyone looked into or researched the ecological impacts of baiting systems that destroy the termite colony? Make sure their are not negative unintended consequences.

Why, termites suck and need to be destroyed. If a few ants, snails die, who cares. It doesn't hurt the water table.

i have been in some 100 year old house and the framing is free of termites. this shit has to be like a bug zapper. No matter how many bugs it zaps it attracts more, so its about the same as no bug zapper. except you are guaranteed to have bugs. So you actually want to give bug zappers as gifts to your neighbors. then the bugs go to their houses, away from your house. plus they pay for electricity and have to clean up the dead bugs.
