There were two issues there. Managing firewalls without ordering is a bit of a pain, as if you do need to add certain things, you would need to remove everything and add them back again with the new item in the right place. But it’s possible, just a bit of a pain, and specially as you need to authenticate for every single rule. The allow rules are more important as you can then write rules like ‘allow ssh from my desktop pc’, then ‘ deny ssh from everywhere else’. But that seems a big in TOS 5.1, it was able to do this in TOS 6. Thanks for the comment on the review!

TOS seems to be getting better, and I am rooting for them but there are always improvements to be made. I want better options than Synology, though their software is still the standard to measure by I think.

I believe they have new hardware coming. Question is, will they follow others in delivering more hardware, sounds like they may not and that home power users are not that interesting to them.

Im really glad that UGREEN just threw really good hardware for a really good price on the market. Even though the software does lack some features in comparison to other vendors, but synology and co really have to stop slacking now (finally). I still have a Synology DS215j but the hardware was already just barely good back then and now it is barely enough for basic cloud stuff. Also the client software like DS video and pretty much all android apps are still in a barely working state, that i stopped using them when i got the Ugreen NAS. I moved all stuff except the cloud to the UGREEN NAS (Synology NAS will backup to the Ugreen NAS though), so i can finally have a good user experience. The only downside is the higher power consumption, but i just have it powered off when not in use.

I think the recommended price for the CPU/Chipset etc alone is $300 or so, so with the memory, other components and chassis, this is why it ends up where it is. And then of course software dev related costs, and potentially some licensing etc. Not that I am trying to justify the specific attached price, but I think all this plays a part.

With 800gbp you have high chance can build a am5 gen5+gen4 5+3 slot high speed nvme ,10Gbe nas with lots of IO,upgrade and free sata connector for more storage AMD 7600+MSI mag x670e tomahawk Of course the size and power consumption is way larger/higher compared to n305 ,and need some time for software setup . Personally I like unraid more than TOS and I have both DIY and terramaster Nas running unraid ATM ( testing truenas on other lab ATM)

Very true, you can pick up a lot of power cheaply, especially if you are selective on parts.I think part of the appeal of these devices is for those that don’t want to DIY and want something that small and quiet. But, building yourself is very attractive for many.

@@sometechguy yep , this turkey solution have some potential honestly , they well spend those 9 pcie 3.0 lanes of n305 , also good cooling small fan ( maybe upgrade to noctua premium after some times ) With this size and power consumption you can hide it anywhere . Consider a crazy DIY idea maybe swap out one M2 and put on a M2 to sata controller , and connect 5-6 sata harddrive to it Technically with more M2 to sata controllers you can build larger hybrid HDD+SSD Nas using this F8 as the brain 😂
