Terranigma also manages to tackle so many topics: SPOILERS AHEAD: - Detachment from nature and its exploitation (going from talking with flowers, birds and animals to see them caged in a zoo) - The lion king ;-) - Yeti :-D - a deer (?) eating his dead companion to survive (that's a typical quintet moment) - Mad scientist and Weapons of mass destruction incl. Zombie apocalypse (and of course it hits tokio) - Cult like worshipping of said scientist - up- and downsides of progress in general - Kings, Knights and Princesses - Freaking Robots & Airships - Good & Evil - Genesis of the world - Reincarnations - Parallel worlds - Development of humanity, popular inventions (electricity, telephone, airplanes) - seeing a small town grow into a metropol where you can rent your own apartment (unless you vote for the drunkard) - Friendship ( i think the 5? 6? friends you meet on your journey are very well done, each with his/her own theme-music) - Love

Back in the days, I had my wow moment when I left the Underworld. I still remember playing the game and I thought it is gone be over soon. Then you get to the real world and everything unfolds with so many hours of gameplay, secrets, story twists, different areas (I was so scared playing the part with the zombies), speaking to animals (not being able to speak to them anymore was sad as hell), that game was an emotional rollercoaster with a shit tone of easter eggs. I play it once every couple of years. Its amazing and Americans would only understand if they had the experience as a child at the time. No other game creates the same emotions in me.

Even worse. We also never got FFVI. But I remember the gaming magazines like „TOTAL!“ back then and their Import Reviews. Everyone was like „Chrono Trigger and FFVI are like the best games ever! Period! If you have several hundred bucks to spare, go to your local import dealer and buy those games! Your life depends on it!“. And we 15 year old kids with approximately 10 bucks in our pocket were like „Import what..??“. Them trolling us kids reached new heights when they regularly published a detailed walkthrough of Chrono Trigger. A game literally no one of their readers could play. I deeply hate them to this day and I never felt like a criminal for downloading the ROMs once we got our hands on this Internet thing...

The city-building isn't anything overly involved. It's mostly interacting with a few NPCs in a couple towns in certain ways (such as completing a simple task or bringing an item), to influence them to improve or develop the town in some way. The City-building part is mainly in seeing the results. They're ultimately not that different from you typical RPG sidequest, where they simply feel like part of the town exploration. It's nowhere close to something like Actraiser, where you have two different genres side by side, so I doubt it'd turn you off at all.

Have you ever played Terranigma once? If not - do it... Maybe you will change your mind! As said in another comment: The only really negative thing I can say about Terranigma is that it does not tell you the Level you need to use the full potential of the weapons you will find / buy... BUT if you use the right weapon against certain enemies / bosses you don't need to grind the entire game! You don't even need to buy any armor, because you will find armor in dungeons that is way better... And once you have the Ship you are FREE to explore the whole world (and you CAN explore it)... there are so many hidden things on the overworld to find... But if you prefer a game where you have a straight path set up for you and you can only explore dungeons then I do understand why you like Illusion of Gaia more... I prefer playing Terranigma over both Illusion of Gaia (or Illusion of Time as it is known here) or Soul Blazer... and I played ALL of them...

15yo me was kinda confused with all the existential questions in this game (like the rest of the quintet trilogy), and the ending left me numb to say the least. Still, I consider it one of the best games of its generation (which were, sadly, the last games of the SNES era). The music was just great, and the battle system allowed for quick action-packed fights. The story was great (again, for the era and compared to most other games out at the time) and the entire premise of going out to remake the world you had just undone intriguing.

I don't know if you would consider this a spoiler, but I think you did pass on the opportunity to elaborate on one of the most memorable aspects about this game and Illusion of Gaia. And that is the fact that you could say they both take place in OUR world. To me it was so entrancing to travel all around the globe, interacting with all its different cultures, and stuff. I wish more RPGs and games in general did this. On that note, have you ever considered making an episode on Mario is Missing?

@@MegaFinalRound I wouldn’t consider it much of a spoiler, Terranigma’s intro tells you that the world definitely resembles our world in some ways, and within 20-30 minutes of gameplay you know it takes place in the real world. In Illusion of Gaia the intro tells you that it is our world by showing you a bunch of the real ruins you visit, and I can’t remember how much gameplay you need to do before you find any real world locations but it’s not that far, the first dungeon has you finding Incan ruins and although I don’t know if any of them are based off real locations they are based around the Incan culture.

Played both Terranigma and Chrono Trigger, both are great but I prefer Terranigma for the more epic story of the resurrection of earth - let's face it you can't get more epic. What you said about the soundtrack is 100% accurate. Considering the game balance I had a different experience, I didn't need to level up once except for the final fight (Bloody Mary was actually pretty easy in my version). When I think about Terranigma the first two things that come to mind are the story and the soundtrack. Never played FF6, but I played Tales of Phantasia and can also highly recommend it.
@ArcaneAzmadi
@ArcaneAzmadi 7 лет назад
I wouldn't compare them, personally. Chrono Trigger is the best menu-based JRPG on the console, Terranigma is the best action JRPG. Both are epic in their own way. One has you reviving an entire planet, the other has you crossing the whole of history to save a world you've already seen destroyed. Equally epic if you ask me.

All correct what you said, but dude, do yourself a favor and play FF6, its not just the best final fantasy to date(you can look into all the rankings, but its also my own opinion), its considered the best JRPG on the SNES(along with Chrono Trigger, but they have different themes and FF6 is extremely HUGE for just a 16 Bit system.....its more like a CD release, were development didn't just went into cinematics) Terranigma stands out as an action rpg, and only Seiken Densetsu 3 could compete with it, it was released in the same year too, on the SNES.(i could mention suikoden series, but lets just compare games on same consoles to be fair, but do yourself a favor and play Suikoden II if you are interested in a great story and ost with traditional JRPG gameplay, yeah 2d sprites and massive loads of text and all the drama)

@Blood Omen The rankings actually show Final Fantasy IX as the highest rated FF of all time (which it deserves) The US never got to develop nostalgia for Terranigma but they did for other SNES games so all polls related to best SNES RPG's of all time are pretty biased.

Bloody Mary is brutally difficult, and largely impossible without magic. Everything else was easy besides Dark Gaia 2's light attack (which can catch you off guard for the first attempt). The bosses were largely creative, but not nearly so satisfying as Gaia's bosses.

Terranigma was hands down my favorite SNES game when I was a kid in Europe. When the internet eventually came and I watched some retro videos I was quite shocked how obscure it was. I was kind of expecting it to be in every top 10 SNES games list and it would probably still be in my personal top 10 games list to this day. But, nope, it's existence is mostly not even acknowledged. I really blame it's lost US release for that.
@harqalada65

I personally love it as much as FF6 & Chrono Trigger. Terranigma is a very unique game with enough independent pros to stray itself from being generic, and solidify itself as a cult classic. In most RPGs you fight countless battles and sometimes you don’t want to replay it because you have to level up, remember certain secrets, etc. But Terranigma has great replay value because the battles are fun, the storyline is great and you catch or remember certain parts playing through that have a lot of bearing to you and gives you certain feelings about life and your own experiences. No game is really perfect, because one person might perceive something as annoying while another might think it’s a cool addition. But I highly recommend this game to anybody, if you like Link to the Past, you’ll like this game as well

Being resident in the UK I am lucky enough to own this game (as well as Soul Blazer and Illusion of Gaia, or 'Illusion of Time' as it was known over here for some reason), and it is absolutely magnificent. Good piece on this game, though I do disagree on Final Fantasy VI being better than it (game seriously loses steam both gameplay and story wise in the World of Ruin)... Chrono Trigger and Terranigma are the best RPGs on the system in my opinion (perhaps with CT slightly edging it over Terranigma).
@JMFSpike
@JMFSpike 7 лет назад
That is very similar to how I feel as well. What's weird is that while I consider Terranigma to be the best in the series, Soul Blazer is probably my favorite. It's quicker paced, has simpler gameplay, and has a certain charm to it that is different then the others. I don't know if you can really say that a certain classic SNES RPG is better then another. They all kind of do their own thing, so I think it's kind of unfair. Terranigma is an action RPG, Chrono Trigger is a turn based RPG, Super Mario RPG is a turn based RPG mixed with a platformer, Earthbound is an old-school Dragon Quest style turn based RPG with crazy western humor etc.

***** Besides the Soul Blazer games, these are what *most* people consider to be the very cream of the crop for SNES RPG's: Earthbound, Super Mario RPG, Final Fantasy 4, 5, & 6, Dragon Quest 5 & 6, Secret of Mana, Seiken Densetsu 3(AKA Secret of Mana 2), Chrono Trigger, Lufia II: Rise of the Sinistrals, Live A Live, Breath of Fire 1 & 2(although they butchered the latter games' English translation), and Shadowrun. There may be a few more Super Famicom titles that belong on that list, but I know I got all of the top tier RPG's released in North America in there. That's pretty much the full list, but there are more that are damn near top tier as well. (Robotrek is just one example.)

Completely agree with this. From the UK but I'd never heard of Terranigma until maybe a decade ago. Playing it is like discovering a lost work of art. FF6 loses steam late on (although not nearly as much as 9 does), spreads a bit thinly at times with characters that add nothing, and pulls a few things from nowhere, but it's still a great game. Terranigma has a weak middle, tacked onto an exceptional begining and ending. Chrono Trigger is paced perfectly with a series of mini crecendos that always move things forward, so kind of edges the others out, but is by far the shortest of the 3.

Watching this really takes me back to my high school years. My favorite SNES game. Thank God for emulation, or I wouldn't have been able to play it and other favorites of mine like Tales of Phantasia and FFV before adulthood. It was fun telling my friends about these awesome games that would never make it to our local stores and rental places and then go to my place to play them in my dad's computer. Heck, even famous games like Chrono Trigger and A Link to the Past were unknown to us for a long time.

The thing about the grind wall when you get to Bloody Mary is that you actually don't really need to grind. Just equip the right weapon. Sadly the game doesn't communicate this all too well but most of the weapons have some sort of special ability. One can break rocks, another heals you slowly and many different weapons are exceptionally strong against certain enemies. So to easily deal with Mary you actually have to downgrade to an older one with lower attack stats. I think it was called silver spear or something like that.

You DO have a chance even if underleveled... and you don't even need to really grind up until a certain point! And if you grind in a certain area, you will level up VERY FAST... And Leveling is NOT ALL! In Terranigma EVERY ENEMY has a weakness to a CERTAIN WEAPON... Equip this Weapon and you will deal MORE damage! And there is another thing regarding weapons: You need to have a CERTAIN LEVEL to really use that weapons full potential! (Last Weapon in game for example will only deal max damage if you are level 36 and higher)... But - and that is the only really bad thing I can say about Terranigma - it does NOT tell you said Level... Up to this point it is one of my favorite if not my absolute favorite SNES Game...

I'm quite surprised you didn't touch on one of the best selling points of Terranigma, the world EVOLUTION. I loved that you could encourage towns, and cities, to grow and expand by facilitating trade between them. One guy catches the best fish, everyone loves it, but unfortunately it spoils quickly so he can't expand his business. Solution? You find another town out in the world that has invented a new kind of metal that is thin and easily pliable. Take that to the fish guy.. suddenly you've introduced the concept of tin cans and he can expand his business, which you can then take the canned sardines to a world-famous food critic in another city, and help expand the town even further. Great stuff. I loved that aspect of Terranigma, absolutely loved it, and that - along with gut-wrenching story (that goat... :( ) and the phenomenal music - easily puts the game into my top 5 favourite SNES games ever.

The hype around this, at least for europeans, is because THIS is our Pinnacle of RPGs on the SNES. Sure, Americans had a wide variety to choose from and Debate over Which is best RPG hands down, with most going either for FFVI or Chrono Trigger...but we didnt had these. When I grew up, I remember like...and handful of rpgs being avaible to german players who didnt went into importing, Soul Blazer, Illusion of Gaia, Secret of Mana and Evermore, Mystic Quest, Lufia 2 and well...Terranigma. So to us, well, this WAS the absolute peak of rpgs avaible, and I'd say most people with an SNES played the game, thanks to its good exposure.
