He had Vision, perhaps the most underrated trait among running backs. He had Moves, the ability to shake even the most experienced defenders. He had Strength, able to bounce off defenders and break through the arms of the biggest, most fierce tacklers. And he had Speed, the ability to break away from some some of the fastest men on the planet. (Finally, he had Grace, the forethought to understand where he stood and how to remain humble in the face of his burgeoning superstar status)

If anyone thinks that it was just his line that was the main reason for him having so much success, watch his first Superbowl against the Packers, the announcers can't stop talking about how the Denver line is one of the smallest in the NFL; and how the key match up was going to be the Packers HUGE defensive line, one of the best in the NFL at the time. If an offensive line was so critical to his success, Emmitt would have rushed for 2,000 with that stacked line he had. I know that the offensive line is a huge part of the run game, the Cowboys now-a-days can put anyone in the back field and get 1,000 yards out of them; but pushing beyond just 1,000 yards and getting 21 touchdowns in a season, 2,008 yards AND being so great in the playoffs against the best teams, it says something about the player.
@mylestate
@mylestate 4 года назад
I think TD is one of the best I ever saw, but the point about how small the Denver O-line is a little off. Shanahan's O-line wasn't a bunch of big guys but that was by design. He wanted smaller, more nimble guys that fit into his running offense. It was due to the scheme he ran. It was a primary, counters & secondary counters that they ran off of limited formations. It required guys that weren't as big, but could move a little better to get to their spots.
@superzero4250
@superzero4250 Год назад
The Denver O-Line was by design efficient, agile, and quick. That is why Denver could literally put anyone in the backfield and they would get 1000 yards by the end of the season, as evidence of what happened when Davis was lost to injury. Terrell Davis was so good, that is why he was able to reel off 2000 yards… Emmitt Smith had one of the best O-Lines in NFL history, even he never came close to 2000 yards and he had plenty of opportunities to reach it. Terrell Davis could have had two 2000 yards seasons, However, chose to sit out the last game and a half the season prior to achieving it. The season he did accomplish the feet, was more of an expectation rather than an aspiration that year… …

In fact when he retired Mike Anderson orlandis Gary and Clinton Portis ran for 1000+ yards in the same system. If he’s a HOF Shaun Alexander belongs as well he had a HOF stretch. So did priest Holmes and so did Jamal Lewis. A couple years doesn’t equal HOF that’s all I’m saying. He was great but not GOAT status

Key for great premier running backs such as Davis is quick excelleration in the backfield after a "sliver or seam" opens up in the offensive line. It doesn't give the defensive backs time to adjust and attack the runner. All truly great running backs have this along with great peripheral vision. Terrell, Brown, Dickerson, Simpson and Sanders, all had that.

Should have been 1st ballot hall of fame. As we now know 2000 yards in a season truly shows how special that running back is. Very very exclusive club Super Bowl MVP and 2000 yards rushing club. So rare we haven't had one since CJ2K. With the way offenses play now I doubt we will see a 2000 yard rusher for a very long time. TD should be mentioned amongst the all time greats definitely top 10. Maybe top 5.

Definitely the MVP of both Super Bowl years for the Broncos. Sure, Elway had a career worthy of his HOF, but TD and the OL were the reason for the SB victories. His ability to see the cutback lane and be through it was unparalleled, but the little thing that highlight reels don't show: He was almost never dropped for a loss. The other teams would stack 8 men in the box, and Denver would just run the exact same play up the middle 3 times in a row. The D would hit TD in the backfield and he would carry them for 3-4. They'd run it again, he'd do the same. They'd run it again and he'd break it for 20. He had power, vision, speed, and a quick cut. Saquan Barkley is the first modern RB I've seen that even comes close.

Was it Davis? Was it the Wide Zone system? It was both. That system changed the NFL. 8 of the top 10 running teams yearly use the wide zone system to this day, and they all lead the league in the fewest runs for a loss and runs of 20+ yards. It is an incredible system for linemen to open holes. Davis, like Marshawn Lynch, was a perfect back for that system. Great vision, hard running, and natural instincts after he hit the hole put him in another class of runner. Not everyone is successful in that system, but when you combine a great back with that system, magic happens.

Terrell Davis is the big reason why Denver won their first two Super Bowls and John Elway has those tings is because of Terrell Davis. Denver finally had a feature back and didn't need a committee of 3 to 4 running backs during the season. Where the Broncos in Super Bowls finally had a running game AND a defense that didn't fall apart and give up 40 plus points in a Super Bowl. Sadly that ACL tear prevented Davis from having a longer NFL career the next season. Just a freak accident after trying to tackle on an interception and getting rolled up by his lineman. He would have had over 10,000 yard if that were the case.
