I'm confused as to why the coaches elected to not use the certified blocks. In fact, why is that even a choice? It's the championships, why wouldn't they want their athletes' times to be recorded globally?

@Elliottklassen
@Elliottklassen 6 месяцев назад
Not at all am I saying that. Really more of the reverse. If we are going to value having robust records, why not start by reviewing the most suspect records on the books? Events like the women’s throws during the Soviet era, or obviously wind-aided results, for example. Those are records that actually hurt the sport because they are in another stratosphere because of suspect circumstances. When I was first getting into track around the 2012 Olympics I remember seeing the women’s 100m after the men and immediately being less interested when I saw them finishing an entire quarter of a second behind the world record. Little did I know that I was actually watching arguably history’s greatest in SAFP.

It's more difficult to remove wired starting blocks from the track, they're coming back around in less than 21 seconds. The blocks are very touchy to motion, a slight shift in the foot will give a false start reading. The feet must remain motion less in the blocks, no shifting in the blocks is allowed.

The coaches had the following decision to make do I vote in favor of blocks that are ultra sensitive and lead to a greater likelihood of false start or disqualification which will make my runners start cautiously and get slower times or do I vote in favor of an almost impossible scenario where a teen ager breaks a world record … coaches will always vote in favor of what will help the majority of their athletes … The SEC should make this decision independent of coaches … because now they look very very bad … it is very prestigious for Georgia to be able to boast of a teenager breaking a world record …also don’t assume that he can just break it again later in the year … sometimes lightning strikes and you never can quite replicate … I am hoping that will not be the case .. but this is a good lesson for the conferences

As an observer, here is a perfect example of someone who is best suited for INDOOR running on a banked track, with 200m circuit with tight turns. He is shorter and more stocky than most top OUTDOOR 400m athletes. He would, in fact, be disadvantaged once performing on the completely flat surface and larger 400m track of the outdoor competition. But that's the wrong way to think of things. The reality is, he is ADvantaged on the smaller, tighter, banked surface of the 200m indoor tracks, due to his body size and shape. He's only 19 so the future is ahead of him. But sadly, I doubt he will ever perform at the same standard outdoors. I wish him well, though and hope he proves me wrong. Cheers.

While I appreciate the need for rules, this does feel very short-sighted & a poor reflection on the arbiters of world records. Assuming there's photographic evidence of a clean start & everything else is otherwise acceptable (ie. the unwired blocks used, the track, drug testing, etc would otherwise meet WR requirements), having the _event organisers' choice_ of unwired blocks decide the fate of a legitimate WR feels more than a little elitist of the WR keepers... _especially_ if that choice was financial. Good optics drive financial sustainability, and what better way to engage more young athletes, their schools _and_ potential sponsors in track & field than showing that records can be broken _anywhere,_ not just the Olympics.
