Terrified Driver Faces One of America's Scariest Bridges During a Snowstorm

Is this one of the scariest bridges in America? Weather can get so terrifying on Michigan's Mackinac Bridge and the lanes are so narrow that the bridge authority offers to help overwhelmed motorists across. We were there when a bridge official took motorist Renee Tschirhart across the bridge to safety, all while in a blizzard. "This is definitely one of the worst days you're going to experience," he told her. But the wind blows strongly through Michigan, knocking the confidence out of drivers. #InsideEdition

I used to live in northern Michigan not far from the bridge, and I've been across the Mackinac bridge on a number of occasions and its not bad at all. @SnowDogsShorts
@SnowDogsShorts 8 лет назад
+mindlessgonzo The Mackinac Bridge is just a few feet short of 5 miles actually. It is longer then the Chesapeake Bay Bridge. And it's not only the length of the bridge that gets people. It sways and shifts in the wind. At it's highest point you are 295 feet above the water, which means it's over 100 feet HIGHER then the Chesapeake Bay Bridge as well!

The winds at the Straights of Mackinac are very intense at times. It's mostly the wind gusts that can make it unnerving for some. I feel awful for this woman and anyone else with such a fear.I grew up in the eastern UP and have driven across this frequently, I have friends that cross it twice daily. I'm accustomed to it and all its features.General rule of thumb applies... don't go too fast for conditions.
@JStarStar00
@JStarStar00 6 лет назад
Yeah .... exactly. I have driven over Big Mac probably 200 times in my life, only a couple times was I even slightly nervous. I actually enjoy driving across in *moderately* stormy weather. Stay within the lower speed limits for bad weather (20 mph), pay attention, don't get distracted by others in the car (or the scenery), don't make sudden jerky movements on the wheel or the brakes and you're fine. If a real storm blows up with 40+ mph winds, visibility way down, they shut the bridge down. That's why god invented cell phones, call whoever is waiting for you on the other side and tell them you will be a couple hours late.

@@user-tq1tf6hh9w Not much really. The designer waaaaay over engineered it and thankfully Michigan and the Feds played for it generously. It's supposed to take 150 MPH winds and last for 1000 years. This is one of the most well built bridges in the nation.

People like her should not be allowed to operate a vehicle period. If you can't drive with confidence in any condition then you shouldn't be driving. It's these type of people that cause the traffic jams, hoard lanes and in general make others have to work harder to get around them in their commute. Then to top it off, she's telling a skilled confident safe driver what he can and can't do while driving. She needs psychiatric help if she thinks she's ok to be on the roads, there is nothing funny or cute about this. This is why we have so many accidents.

The bridge barely "sways" enough to even be perceptible to humans. The car itself will be buffeted back and forth by wind and dingbats think that is the whole bridge swaying. The bridge does move -- the center span can move like 18 feet to one side or the other in heavy winds -- but the span is 3800 feet long so the movement is only an inch or so per second, minor compared if you're getting hit from the side by 40 mph wind blasts.

Crossed the Mac, in a real Blizzard, with a short box 2WD P/U towing a loaded six place snowmobile trailer, at night... took another five hours to get to Two Heart.

It's kind of surprising that they came up with a bridge, to connect the two peninsulas together. 🤔

This driver sounds annoyed by people talking to him about being scared crossing the bridge. Driver saying to himself geez its not even scary people should take Prozac when taking a ride across this bridge.

Wiki: Opened in 1957, the 26,372-foot (8,038 m) bridge (familiarly known as "Big Mac" and "Mighty Mac") is the world's 16th-longest in total suspension and the longest suspension bridge between anchorages in the Western hemisphere. Chesapeake Bay Bridge-22,790 ft (6,946 m) just saying. Yes both are known as scary bridges with their frequency of high winds. I would avail myself of the free chauffeur service.

I want to do that! I love driving and that would be like an amusement ride for me. I(think) I have high high anxiety and driving calms(and/or stimulates) me. Whichever, it would be fun.😀

Had the pleasure of driving over that bridge in all seasons, and all types of weather, as well as at the helm of the Coast Guard Cutter Mackinaw breaking ice at night. ( the original Mackinaw, not the new buoy tender with the same name)
