The problem with Excalibur is its cost. The israelis had the same problem, they wanted cheap long distance (155mm) accurate artillery, but they found the cost to be too high. When they reevaluated their needs (price, distance, accuracy), they decided that distance can be decreased - so they developed iron sting, a 120mm gps/laser guided mortar. Although its range is limited to 12km, the cheap cost and versatility (both gps and laser guided; can be dropped from uav and glide towards a spevific target) allowed them to purchase these mortars to all their army fighting units.

I doubt the cost of $150,000 per weapon is correct. The first contract for a batch of weapons includes a significant component of production set up costs, training etc.. The second contract will not include these production setup and tooling costs. Furthermore the production process will be streamlined and quality control yields higher. Excalibur will probably be 1/4 to 1/10 this cost in subsequent production batches

@@williamzk9083 i once read an Israeli army commentary about precise 155m artillery. It stated that 150k standard 155mm rounds will be used in a "standard" 6 weeks military campaign with Syria and Lebanon. Approximately 20k shells need to be precise. Even with that amount, they couldn't find a way to reduce cost. They offered two alternatives: precise artillery for small amount if 240mm cannons or precise artilery rockets. They chose the rocket route (see elbit Pulse launcher which has all sorts of rockets and missiles) for long distance accurate hitting and 120mm mortars for short distance hitting. I'm not sure if their solution is right for Nato/US, but they did their math... Edit - the Israelis still have precise 155mm shells (IAI "top gun"), but they reduced accuracy to 20m cep to lower the price.

I fired the 155mm in vietnam at artillery base camps. we had about 6 diffrent rounds all fused. HE was the most used. The cluster rounds were very good with vc base camps and arms caches. 4th div.

I said "Dad: Tell Natasha about that time your guys snuck into the Soviet Union in the thick of the night to steal their weapons grade Plutonium, give it to Chechen rebels, call in the news crews and international forces to catch them in the act - red-handed, SO embarrassing to the Kremlin. He said "Not as good as the time we were in Yekaterinburg!" Natasha screamed "You were in my home town with military unit??!!" No... no. ha ha! We kept at her.

What is more of a game changer is the precision guidance kit, PGK, that can replace the fuse on an ordinary artillery shell. These kits are relatively cheap and give the artillery shell high precision and ablity to air burst, contact or delay detonation. The kit will also deactivated the shell if it goes off target allowing close artillery support of friendly troops. Essentially these kits increase the effectiveness of artillery by a factor of ten or more. Really the US needs to send allot more of this kits.

@@jdogdarkness ...you're correct about cost, approx only 15% of an Excalibur BUT 6 times the CEP (circular error probability) or less than 15% of the accuracy. If you want to hit a building or runway, load up the PGK..it should do well. If you're hunting for a vehicle (battle tank, car, parked airplane) you want an Excalibur. I'd suggest carrying both and call your accountant for financial advise on cost vs return values before loading...😎😎

Hey, thanks for the video. I was a U.S. Army Artilleryman for seven years. I believe the M982 is most accurately called a “projectile” instead of a “shell”. Additionally, the shear speed of a parabolic arch munition like M982 is the most significant factor in it’s unhittability compared to a cruise missile. Anyway, good video!

I am not sure where you got your cost figures for a standard 155mm round, but it is a lot more than a few hundred dollars. Figures I have seen have it over $3,000 per round. Some information on the net shows a much lower price at around a $1,000, but if you look closely you will see the date of publication for that information is almost 2 decades old. Even though the M982 is expensive, having that first shot first kill can be priceless when taking out the enemy and preventing them from scattering after the first rounds land.

1970/71 Self Propelled Heavy Artillery in RVN (175mm and 8 inch/203mm). The 175 was good to about 27 miles with a circular error probability of 65ish meters. With a burst kill diameter of about 150 meters, it got the job Done. The 8 inch/203mm gun was, for all it's size, a precision projectile within it's range of 11/12 miles. In FDC, we used to say we could drop it on a dime. 7 years later I went through OCS for a Commission. We had artillery fire familiarization in a concrete bunker with about 18" bulletproof glass. The incoming rounds were "only" from a 105, but the concussion knocked the air out of our lungs, made our eardrums sing, and for sure, puckered us up. I was thankful I had been on the sending end of larger artillery!

Excalibur is good for what it is, it's just too damn expensive. Artillery has always only been liked because it allowed you to bring a lot of firepower for not a whole lot of money. The idea is great, but nowadays they are working on sub $1000 fuzes for regular artillery shells that contain all the GPS guidance and also the control wings. The key to great artillery is and will always be affordability to bring in the scales you need for artillery to be as devastating as possible.

Nah, you use them against high value targets like tanks, radars, and CC centers. You can used regular artillery for everything else. Their real value is that you can launch them from any 155mm piece. The enemy has no way of predicting if you have any or not.

A $100k artillery round that has a high percentage chance of hitting/destroying $1m+ enemy weapons systems like tanks and AA or even a high ranking officer isn't a bad trade off IMO. Not to mention the fear it instills in your enemy making them question every move they make and whether they will end up within range of a very precision artillery strike.

For the next few weeks, the principle Ukrainian problem is moving through minefields, and not because they can't clear a path through the field. The problem is that the field is covered by Russian artillery firing from 25km away, which makes mine clearing operations vastly more difficult. Hitting Russian artillery has become a priority. Fixed Russian guns can be hit in one timed salvo from many Ukrainian guns. Each Ukrainian gun stands by with a pre-programmed Excalibur round, just waiting for the word to come down of WHEN to shoot. After that, Ukrainian counter-battery radars look for further active Russian guns, particularly for the normally elusive self-propelled type. With Excalibur, the SP guns can be fired at before the Russian's first shell even hits the ground. Neutralizing enemy artillery makes most minefields much easier to defeat.

@@jdogdarkness Its GPS guidance only. GPS is spoofed/jammed in Ukraine making them USELESS. ExCaliber uses Inertial navigation with a GPS rough check. Also the cheaper nose replacement GPS guidance finned range is +25% shorter as it does not allow the shell to properly fly using body lift. > its greater than 25% range reduction by the way. Artillery firing ExCaliber are immune from Russian counter battery fire should they choose to do so unlike the cheaper solution. Also, the only reason the cost is claimed to be what it is is due to them adding in the R&D cost, not the actual shell cost which is NOT $100k. Shell cost is way way way way way way way less. Still more expensive than M1156, but not by much.

I was reading today or hearing via RU-vid that when the Excalibur shells were first used in Ukraine, they were very effective. However due to their GPS signal being easily jammed, they quickly lost their effectiveness when countermeasures were employed. FPV drones seem to have taken over the role of the Excalibur shells. As long as signal is maintained with the operator, they're less prone to GPS jamming than the Excalibur shell at a much less cost, namely around $1,000 for FPV drone versus $100,000 for the Excalibur shell. Certainly an excellent weapon when electronic countermeasures are not employed.

Out of 3000 rounds how many were used and how many were remaining and how many targets were neutralized? These shell uses GPS so it won't be difficult to extract telemetric data of these shells.

It seems that the M982 is better for stategic targets, while traditional artillery is more well suited for firing-for-effect, e.g., blanketing an area ahead of advancing infantry, or taking out convoys.

The excalibur was used to eliminate roof-top mortars in Baghdad. The US miitary had sensors that could detect and precisely locate mortar sources, but at the beginning of the conflict the only rapid response was the deployment of aircraft, which always arrived after the rooftop had been scrubbed and abandoned. At Raytheon-Tucson I attended an emergency meeting where a high-strung Lt Colonel gleefully announced that they had successfully eliminated a well known perpertrator will a single excalibur round. I believe it used a height-of-burst fuze.

The trick here is to send multiple “dumb” rounds down range before the EXCALIBER is deployed. There is no way in this short time technology can determine which is which. Expensive countermeasure rockets become even more expensive if they are wasted.

I'm not sure if civilians understand the use of artillery. You have a Target you have the forward Observer call in that 6 to 8 digit grid coordinates. A battery, generally five guns will aim at that same area to fire all rounds at exactly the same time. They adjust fire from there, making the corrections and then every Salvo after that is exactly the same five rounds of artillery until the target is destroyed. They may fire as many as 20 to 25 shells in one fire mission. It's normally against people in the open, it's not nearly as effective against tanks except to make them close their hatches and limit their visibility. An Excalibur round is fired all by itself onto one unitary target. It's amazingly comparable to a sniper. One shot one kill is all they need. So you really can't compare a standard 155 mm round to an excalibur, they are different missions. They do not use them in the same way they use standard artillery so you only need a fraction of Excalibur rounds on the battlefield to make a difference. It is exactly that, a high explosive sniper round.

The idea that it is difficult or rare to hit an incoming medium/heavy artillery shell belies the fact that the UK MOD when developing A/A systems even prior to 1982 (falklands war) used Naval 115 mm (4.5 inch) Mk 6 & 7 shells (M/V 770 m/s) as a drone target for various naval A/A missile systems.

You do not mention that the Raytheon-Bofors Excalibur grenade is a collaboration between Sweden and the USA Raytheon has responded for the navigation part while Bofors has responsible for the fuselage, the effect section and the base as well as the ballistic capability.

Excalibur was co-developed by Raytheon Missiles & Defense (guidance system) and the BAE Systems Bofors. The GPS module was made by a subdivision of L3 (now L3Harris). Other significant contributors were General Dynamics and M/A-COM.

There's a story from Afghanistan days - a US Army platoon called for fire, and the radio responded that a single round (marking round) was en route, "shot out." Nothing was seen. The FiSTer called for another round, repeating the coordinates for the fire control officer, to which a response of, "Shot out" was heard. Again, nothing was seen. CAS was called for in place of indirect fires. Much later, after the infantry cleared the threat and nearby village, it was found that both marking rounds had gone into the same well, right down the hole into the bottom. Thus, from afar, it appeared that nothing happened.

I remember seeing the Excalibur shell on the show future weapons in like very late 1990’s or early 2000’s. Loved that show. Seeing a lot of weapons from that show now. Same with m triple 7 and metal storm which was the coolest looking and idea but never made it to production.

A typical 155 shell can cost between $500-$1,500 dollars. Just one of these rounds is $110,000.00. A well trained 155 team can get iron on target quickly after one adjustment. The expense here is ridiculous. You can fire over 200 conventional rounds for the price of one of these...

Even if the latest Russian SAM systems can bring down an Excalibur guided shell, or any other 155 mm munition, the cost differential between one or two of their rockets to just one of our Excalibur projectiles will always be to our benefit. Plus, remember that advanced SAMs not only cost a lot of money, but require advanced technology presently denied Russia through Western sanctions.

Russia doesn't have that many Tor AA systems and they are a high value target for Ukrainian drones, artillery and rocket forces. Even if the Tor's can take out an Excalibur, they're only able to hit less then 3% of them, the same goes for the HIMARS rounds. Russian/Soviet weaponry is not ready for Prime Time, over in a 3rd world pissHole war their junk works fine, but up against a Western armed nation/nations, the Russian army is on a suicide mission every time it pops it's head up out of their rat holes.

There is also the m1156 Precision Guidance Kit, which is a GPS guided kit that screws onto the nose of a standard 155mm artillery round, much cheaper. I believe these have also been deployed to Ukraine? You should do a video about this device also.

Standard 155 mm artillery shell costs $500. BONUS self guided artillery shell costs $130 thousand. About the same amount as GMLRS carries a warhead twice as heavy, fires twice as far. Great for stationary targets. BONUS rounds can hit moving targets. Cheapest modern Russian T 72 tank costs $500 thousand. Most advanced T90M costs up to $4.5 million. Easily exceeds the cost f a HIMARS GMLRS rocket or BONUS artillery round .

The videos showing in the first few minutes were filmed at the Yuma Proving Grounds just outside of Yuma Az. It’s been devastating to the environment and the wildlife. I would rather fire 1 $1000 round to neutralize a target and then move on to the next target or displace in minutes. Rather than fire 10 $100 rounds to do the same thing. The chances of evading counter artillery outweigh the cost of the round.
