Terrifying Tornado Encounter: Storm Chaser's Close Call

May 11, 2014: While chasing storms in Nebraska on Mother's Day, I encountered multiple tornadoes, including a large wedge tornado near Beaver Crossing. I became focused on capturing footage of the wedge tornado and ended up in a close call when the storm's path shifted towards my position. With winds intensifying rapidly, I made the decision to pull into a ditch to avoid the potential of being rolled over.

Event Summary:
The first round of active Mother's Day weather started up already during the very early morning hours of Sunday, May 11, 2014, as a line of strong to severe thunderstorms quickly developed near the Nebraska/Kansas state line around 3 a.m. This line gradually shifted north during the remainder of the overnight hours, dropping some large hail and bringing portions of the area their first round of heavy rainfall. Hail ranging from quarter to ping pong ball size was reported in portions of the area, and it's likely other locations saw hail as well, but the time of night was not favorable to get many reports.
This first round of severe weather tapered off to an end around sunrise, and the rest of the morning into early afternoon was relatively quiet. A cold front started working its way into the area from the west, while a warm front was pushing north out of Kansas. The position of these fronts resulted in a large temperature gradient across the NWS Hastings coverage area, with afternoon temperatures ranging from around 50 degrees in the northwest to near 90 in the southeast. When the mid afternoon hours arrived, thunderstorms began to develop in the Hastings area. Instability had been building all afternoon and deep layer shear was sufficient for thunderstorms to quickly become severe. While other thunderstorms did develop, the initial one that popped up southeast of Hastings started to work its way east, becoming anchored along the eastward extending warm front. As it moved into the Clay, northern Fillmore and southeastern York County areas, a number of tornado reports were received. Other thunderstorms were also responsible for large hail up to the size of hen eggs, damaging wind gusts and heavy rain. Though shower and thunderstorm activity continued well into the overnight hours, the brunt of the activity had shifted into eastern Nebraska by late evening.
Some much-needed rainfall was also observed across the area, with several locations seeing rainfall amounts in excess of 1 inch. Locations across portions of Adams county, Clay county, Hamilton county and York county in south central Nebraska saw some of the heaviest rainfall on Sunday afternoon...with rain amounts of two to three inches common through many locations. The combination of rain that fell early Sunday morning along with that which fell Sunday afternoon into Sunday night totaled as high as 5-7", primarily in parts of York County. This resulted in minor flooding of several creeks and streams in the area.

Holy mackerel, I think this is the best view of the wedge, and in fact of any of the tornadoes from that day. All the other videos I’ve seen are either low contrast, the tornado is very rain wrapped, or you can only see one side of it. I think my favorite segment is from 2:47 to 4:40 and beyond. Reminds me of that one video from Quinter in 2008, focused on a satellite that slowly disappears from view as a wedge slowly emerges from the murk.

I remember chasing this storm. Approached the rain-wrapped meso and basically noped the fuck outta there. This storm was hauntingly dark and mean. Never did see the wedge emerge but things just felt bad that day

Eerily similar look to the Phil Campbell tornado of 4/27/11

At what point during the video does the wedge form? i’m assuming the first funnel was a satellite as the darkening behind it becomes the wedge and envelops it?

It is back there the entire time just not well defined visually.

Idk if you will see my comment since this was uploaded 2 years ago but I actually was in this tornado. How? Well I lived in beaver crossing when I was pretty young around like 5 or 6 I can't remember the exact age but I know I was in kindergarten at school around this time. Basically what happened is that my mom me and my sister were in the hallway. But basically my mom thought she heard a noise like someone knocking on the door turns out it was the tornado. And my mom almost died that day because the screen door got flung at her but she ran and jumped over me and my sister to keep us both safe we stayed there for like god knows how long and some neighbor we knew about saved all of us after the tornado was gone. Man that was one of the most scariest experiences I ever had if you have any questions please just reply and I will try to reply back the best I can.

Excellent work sir! That was some of the best video I’ve seen. You certainly manage to capture the awesome violence and power of that storm from what must have been a truly uncomfortable vantage point. Thank you Pecos Hank for directing me to this channel!

Great chase I'm laaate to this video now me in that second circulation multi vortex I thought you were a bit close .thats just me tho I'm still trying to catch a system like this. But recently there's been a few chasers that got themselves yeeeted out trying to do reed trimmer things and sometimes as I've seen not Soo smart it's a valuable lesson for some!!!

The best video I've watched from this event. Just went to check if any more videos had been uploaded in the last couple years and missed typed it beaver creek and this came up. Great job!! Very intense. I was a little late to the party that day picking up my new truck from Oklahoma City and didn't want to get to close. Got video from SE side as it passed NW of Cordova..

I've chased quite a bit, for years. THIS.....is one hell of a tornado-intercept tape. One of the best I've ever seen. I've got a library of way too many storm chase excursions from chasers as far back as at least early 70's, and THIS absolutely holds it's own. Some of the vid focus quality is lacking throughout, but what makes up for it are all the ambient / incredible sounds and views that are clearly featured on this wicked Nebraska storm. I recommend that the new listener crank up the volume and hear what a tornadic thunderstorm intercept truly sounds like.
