At 9:38 in the morning on August 12th, 2020. A train derailed in Scotland, precisely here near to the town of Stonehaven. On that fateful day, a nation received the news that had a fatal train accident took place on the railway line that runs between Aberdeen and Dundee. For the first time in over a decade, a train not only derailed in a devastating accident but induced fatal injury.
Railway accidents have become exceedingly rare in the United Kingdom in recent years, coinciding with this, deaths related to the railway have also drastically decreased to nearly zero. Most deaths related to rail accidents in the UK after 2004 have mostly been linked level crossing incidents. But this never really involved a train going off the rails, with one notable exception in 2007. Needless to say that rail travel in Britain, despite its many flaws, is incredibly safe.
Which may be why so much attention was drawn to the 2020 derailment at Carmont in Scotland. It immediately became headline news across the country. It was the first major rail accident in years. It should be noted right off the start, that this could have been far greater tragedy than it already was. Occurring in 2020 at the height of the Pandemic, the number of rail travellers at that time were limited in numbers. This is the story of the Stonehaven Derailment. We’ll explore what happened here and the events leading up to that fatal accident.

THERE HAS BEEN A UPDATE! September 7th 2023. from the BBC... "Network Rail has admitted a series of failings which led to the death of three people in a train derailment near Stonehaven in 2020. The company pleaded guilty to criminal charges at the High Court in Aberdeen". Network Rail admitted failing to impose a speed restriction, warn the driver that part of the track was unsafe, or ask him to reduce his speed. It also admitted a number of failures over the maintenance and inspection of drainage in the area, and in adverse and extreme weather planning". I don't know the legal implications of this in Scotland or the UK (I'm American), but this sounds like very good news, and something you'd never hear this side of the pond - a corporation admitting responsibility. Thanks for the update, and I always love a Chloe weather report!

@@jameshowe6057 If I've learned anything from watching disaster documentaries, it is that negligence is only ever temporarily eradicated; it always returns. People get lazy, greedy, overworked, underfunded - the reasons are many. And because the results of negligence are not immediate, it always gets worse until the sudden shock of a disaster causes people to toe the line again... until the next cycle of negligence begins. Human nature, alas.

It seems very weird that given the existing known landslides the train wasn't told to run at reduced speed - if this was at 30MPH there may have been no deaths :(

The accident and fatality statistics she began the video with tell me that you and your colleagues working on the railways in Britain are doing an incredible job, and you deserve to be commended. And yeah, one lapse has the potential for tragedy, but I assume you have redundancies built into the system to protect against single-fault errors becoming catastrophes. Your safety record amazes me. People do have lapses because we're human, but a good robust system can handle that. Now if you have a lapse at the same time someone else has a lapse... best not to have any lapses I guess. But congratulations on your tremendous safety record! That tells me the system is excellent, and the individuals who work to keep that system running safely are doing their jobs with diligence.

You have a magical ability to tell these stories in a way that makes them feel important and impactful. It's natural to be desensitized to tragedies and go "oh, just another derailment, well, at least just 3 people died", but watching your videos reminds viewers that tragedies shouldn't be seen as mundane. I lived in Aberdeen at the time, I had never seen a thunderstorm like the one we got that day. Torrential. Totally torrential rain. I ended up not being able to get into work (I worked in a medical lab) because I had to wade out of my apartment building. My friend at the time had been seconded to the lab in Dundee, I've never rang someone so hysterically before, literally screamed "tell me you weren't on that train" and their response, "the bus couldn't get to the station with the flooding so I missed the train." Never felt so much relief. As a born and bred Scot I'll tell you, it was BAD that day. Our hospital was put on alert, we were getting mass transfusion packs ready if they had to be sent at short notice etc. Then no one came. I remember standing there thinking "I can't tell if it was bad or good" thank christ we were in lockdown or that train would have been packed and many more people would have died.

Thank you for doing such a great job on this video. I am from Stonehaven and have lived here for many years. I remember this day. The shock echoed through the town when this happened. I regularly use the route and met the conductor that was killed on a few occasions. He was always a lovely man and it’s really sad that this accident took him and the other 2 victims away from their family’s and loved ones. May they rest in peace.

@@jameshowe6057to my knowledge everyone has always called it the Stonehaven derailment as it was only a few minutes outside Stonehaven and carmont isn’t a well known place and is very rural.But it probably should be called that.

I used to live in Stonehaven as a kid (Greenkeepers Cottage), can't remember much about it apart from the enormous Olympic open air swimming pool (Brrr) Left Scotland in 88 so I haven't heard about the derailment.

There was 1 piece of information that you missed. The driver & Conductor unfortunately passed away. The signaller did not know that the accident had happened. It was the off duty conductor that walked about 2 miles down the track to call for help because the nearest line side signller phone was broken. Apart from that, fantastic video

Being a pilot I tend to be mostly interested in aircraft accident investigations however well researched train accidents, such as in this video, are interesting as well. Both aircraft and train accidents do in fact have one thing in common, major accidents occur due to a series of things going wrong before hand and not just one simple thing. Well done.

Call me crazy, but I don't think tragic incidents involving the deaths of people are the right places for "humour". I also don't quite see what "comfort" has to do with anything? Its just poor writing, and immensely disrespectful. Also, I don't quite see the need for the lazy all-caps clickbait in the title, as well as the weather portion of the video which had absolutely zero reason to be "performed" and comes across as more of a self-driven excuse to come on camera for personal reasons rather than for the benefit of the video and viewer, or the story itself. If this is the way this channel is heading, ill be seeing myself out to be honest. Pretty noticeable drop in quality, as well as a clear shift in attitude (For the worse), as far as I'm concerned.

I've really enjoyed these weather reports you've added in too. Oftentimes I will already know the details of what happened as I've taken a lot of deep dives into air crash investigations, yet still I'll watch your vids on them because there's always a little more to them, and even when there's nothing new from what I knew, I still think they're really well done. As for rail, sea, and structural disasters, my knowledge is little to none so it's great to learn more from you. Thanks for doing these in such a great way and keep up the fantastic work.

the valenta used a single stage, high pressure turbo-supercharger to attain a high power to weight ratio, the turbo is so large that it produces a whining sound akin to that of a small jet engine

@@mipmipmipmipmip it's the non-automotive word for a turbocharger, technically a turbo is a type of supercharger as "supercharger" actually just refers to anything that forces air into an engine whether it's turbine or belt driven. In automotive colloquialism the terms have become mutually exclusive so as to aid differentiation between belt and turbine driven superchargers, but outside the context of cars "turbosupercharger" is the proper term for a turbo

I left the UK and Network Rail in 2008. As soon as you mentioned Carillon I cringed!! Your presentation really highlighted the cowboy outfits that were entrusted to maintain the Railway. It used to be Safety First, since privatisation it's all about profit and shareholders. I think it was Chiltern Railways that coined the phase "Safe Performance ". ie meet your PPF and hope nothing goes wrong.

A train desaster that cannot be missed in a channel like this is the Eschede train disaster in Germany. Although there are many documentaries about this disaster, there are some points where the desaster could have been avoided if someone had taken action, but this didn't happen, and no one has ever dug into this aspect as to why. Given your ability to delve deeply into the matter, I hope that one day you will address these questions and finally find satisfactory answers to that mystery.

I remember reading about this years ago and was intrigued (shame about the loss of life) Another one D.B. should cover is Colwich Train crash in 1986 two trains collided head on and only one person was killed (unfortunately) that accident is on wikipedia

I got into the topic because my grandfather died (long before I was born) in the crash of Nigeria Airways flight 825 at Lagos, but there doesn't seem to be much information about the accident out there. The really tragic irony is that as an engineer he was especially excited to fly in the VC-10 for the first time, and ended up in one of the few deadly accidents involving the plane. Maybe you'll get round to covering it one day... but either way, thanks for educating me so thoroughly about all the possible factors involved in aviation incidents!

Once again, you did an incredible job! Thank you for drawing attention to the dangers of contracting out. It's a very troubling trend worldwide that is causing all sorts of serious problems. I'm so glad that very few people were on that train, and that the incident led to ScotRail being transferred to public ownership. Didn’t expect to see one local to me, I’m just up the coast a wee bit. This one really shocked us all, the media spectacle leaving a bad taste in a fair amount of our mouths as they all sorta rushed to the site to go on about how much of a tragedy it was, that royalty came up, when what folk really needed was sympathy, families lost loved ones and it just felt like a media circus. That’s how it felt for friends in Stonehaven, media could’ve been more understanding tbh. There’s a memorial plaque at Stonehaven railway station if anyones ever in the area.

I live in Aberdeenshire, around 30 miles north of where this accident happened. It always feels weird watching videos that discuss crime or disasters in the area, mainly cause I always suspect no one gives a shit about anything that happens here, even if it is a crime or disaster like the Stonehaven derailment. So seeing this video pop up was a huge surprise, I distinctly remember the news coverage surrounding the accident after it happened on the news and newspapers. Thank you for the very informative video and commentary!

Cracking video. The light load on the train saved many lives that day and for that we can be thankful. The HST and Mark 3 carriages are iconic. I still enjoy travelling on the Intercity 225's with the Mark 4 coaches on the ECML. Way more comfortable than the modern Azumas. Yes the Azuma's accelerate and brake more smoothly and the structure of the carriages to manage accidents is better, but the seats have the comfort of a concrete bench.

I love long-form/semi-long-form content covering train/airplane disasters, and the way you cover them so respectfully with so much detail (seriously you make 30 minutes feel like 10) is great! Sometimes I wonder though for example one thing: trying to put all of our Nordic flights, trains 'treks', bus 'treks' and do a meta-analysis on the reliability on various parts of the world. My Da was a GM for the ECML for British Rail, Network Rail, Babcock Rail, Scots Rail… it went under so many name changes and divisions. And I remember how devastated he was with this accident. He retired a couple of years before this incident, but ended up helping for a couple of weeks with the incident.

Have you ever covered the Ladbroke train crash in London in 99 Chloe? You should’ve gone onboard the 41001 prototype HST when it was at ruddington few years ago before it got sent to Locomotion just hearing the valenta engine kick in & scream was amazing. You would’ve loved it.
