me, as an italian, thought "well.. The captain of the Titanic isn't the only person at fault for its sinking. Long before she set sail, she had a fire onboard & a few other small issues. All of which weren't checked to see if she was safe to sail, let alone take passengers. It was a whole host of failures that culminated in her fate. The captain of the Concordia however has no such excuse. He chose to put that ship on a course that he knew was potentially dangerous. There was nothing wrong with the ship itself. His actions - or lack of - made things worse after the ship hit the rocks too. Turning the ship allowed more water to pour into its sub - compartments, which caused it to list at that odd angle. It also left the ship vulnerable to the tidal currents & winds, blowing it off course, with no means to counter it. That sandbank was a blessing in disguise, otherwise the ship would've continued taking on water, causing it to tilt even more & become fully submerged.

I want you to know that the titanic and the Concordia where both ships and they both sank, they where both in water, they both hade no one to save them (first atleast) and that comparing these two tragedies is just showing us how these two events have a lot in Common, and this just how even though we have learned a lot because of the titanic these tragedies still happen and we should still continue to make the boats safer and we have to make better evacuation plans. If we relate Titanic to Concordia we only mean it as “look this is similar to titanic” and we are not trying to offend anyone. And I am sorry if we did.

@@Kornelius.1228 You don't even compare, i mean you don't even think to compare TITANIC disaster to Costa Concordia, Both sank? what do you mean? TITANIC is 4kilometers under the sea dude. Concordia just tilted and thats it. People could swim to shore and on top of that people could stay on the tilted ship for a week and wait for help, i mean they had somewhere to stay, they were not forced to jump into the water. By saying that i don't mean that it wasn't bad, ofc and it was bad and i feel sorry for everyone on the ship. But don't put those 2 disasters together for any reason, TITANIC disaster overall was at least 100 times worse.

No one should have died at all, all they had to do was shut down the lifts and make sure everyone was as high up on the ship as possible towards the side that was lifting up. They had plenty of time to do this, the thing never even sank, it just rolled over slowly. Also it was nothing like the titanic, it was like 100m from the shore, most people could have just swam it in the following morning.

43:50 If he's talking about emergency situations in general, not just on ships, I don't quite believe it. At least in Germany, e.g., you propably won't be told there's a fire. Staff members are trained to tell you to keep calm and get out, not to tell you there's a fire. And I've been to an airport with a false alert and a closed fire protection gate. The only thing alerting the people were flashing signs telling them to turn around. No sirens or any kind of information... But that are just very individual experiences by myself and in no means to be taken generally applicable .

The MOST IMPORTANT part of this is at the end around 43:50 the lecturer who spoke about read earth indicating people should be told much more fully earlier and more honestly. This is how we learn from history and also the reference to the ancient (literally) design of lifeboats and the way folks escape from disasters. Can you imagine the death toll had this happened in deeper water? Catastrophic up to 4000 then you’ve got something like the Estonia I personally am worried about the design of some of these super ships, sine of which don’t really resemble boats anymore - more like floating apartment blocks. With the power of the ocean that worries me. It takes one multi- person disaster in the Caribbean to entirely reevaluate these money pits and the entire industry gets questioned … Much rather cruise on a boat that looks like a boat thank you. Great documentary. One question. There’s a reference somewhere in the comments to the doc not playing key elements of the coastguard/xxaptain exchange. Did it miss something important ?

Paradoxically, that would actually have been better. Unfortunately Schettino didn't believe his Chief Engineer who told him that 5 or 6 compartments were open to the sea (news flashes from his reports said only one), and therefore didn't signal the abandon ship when he should have done - an hour or so before she eventually grounded and capsized. In deeper water of the main channel the ship would have stayed upright and allowed an orderly abandon in the boats without the added complications of the ship heeling when she eventually capsized. They had a lot of time to do it, but the Master seemed to be in leave of his senses. There's a lot of shipping in that channel, and help would have been available easier than it was after the ship grounded. It would also have saved the insurers a costly salvage operation to clear the wreck! I would think that Schettino in his prison cell has gone over this many times in his mind since and wished he had acted to abandon sooner and in deep water. His sentence would have been lighter for sure, as it's unlikely anyone would have died that night.

A couple from our town died there, their son went there and I imagined at that time how horrible that is. so I read about it roughly but not in detail. I knew about the Captain's behaviour, but not really all of it. And I am shocked now about him, not only abandoning his passengers, but rejecting to help! And to give such an interview... those poor people, I can truly understand any rage against him from passengers left on the ship but also from victim's relatives.
