Steve Stack is back in Studio 3B for another episode of Amerian Hardwood Advisor! In this episode of the AHA podcast, Steve chats with Terry Baird, Second-Generation Owner of Baird Brothers Fine Hardwoods.
Watch as Steve and Terry explain everything you need to know about live sawn character grade white oak! This specialty product is commonly used as live sawn white oak flooring - but it’s also the beautiful backdrop as the siding to our podcast booth in Studio 3B!
Wide plank flooring is especially popular with a live sawn cut. Extra wide plank white oak wood floors show off all the different grain patterns and colors that make natural hardwood so beautiful. Because of this, live sawn white oak flooring is a favorite among homeowners.
What makes live sawn different is the sawing method. Live sawn boards are cut straight across the log in a single direction, slicing through both sapwood and interior heartwood. This method is great for two reasons: very little waste at the sawmill and an unmatched natural hardwood look! This technique shows off the wood’s natural grade, characteristics and grain pattern. Live sawn cut, also known as french cut, can mix plain sawn, rift sawn, and quarter sawn boards for a totally unique solid wood floor!
Homeowners everywhere choose live sawn white oak flooring for many reasons. One, it's gorgeous! Whether you elect to go with prefinished or unfinished hardwood, you’ll get a hardwood floor that will be the envy on the block. Two, its durability! White oak is close to hickory on the Janka Hardness Table, so you know you’re getting a solid wood floor that can withstand traffic! Three, it’s easy to install! White oak live sawn floors from Baird Brothers utilize a tongue & groove installation method.
When it comes to hardwood flooring options, white oak and red oak are tough competitors. Most people don’t know this, but red oak can actually be stained to look eerily similar to white oak! As Terry explains, only hardwood experts can easily spot the difference! Red oak is typically less expensive per square foot than live sawn white oak hardwood flooring, so some homeowners opt for this option and stain it to achieve a similar look.
